Chapter 1

Introduction

Schools are slowly looking at Digital Technology as an opportunity to develop teaching methods and

resonate with students on a technology level. Digital technology is a key aspect of learning in the school.

People in the society nowadays, are engaging more with the technology constantly outside/inside of the

classroom and they are learning more through technology. Technology has become a part of their

lifestyle now because they are exposed everyday with digital technology. In school most of the access to

technology are from digital technology, teachers able to access high quality of internet access for

teaching and learning purposes to students. Most of the teacher and professors nowadays are using

digital technology for social media channels, like facebook for them to connect with the school who can

help them adapt their teaching practices. Digital technologies is somehow important to the society

because some of this digital technologies are very useful for educational purposes, especially for the

students, to learn new skills and pursue their interests.

Background of the study

The purpose of this study is to name implications for future investment in the use of digital

technology for learning in schools. According to a study done by Professor Steven Higgins from Durham

University School of Education “Research findings from experimental and quasi-experimental designs –

which have been combined in meta-analyses – indicate that technology-based interventions tend to

produce just slightly lower levels of improvement when compared with other researched interventions

and approaches (such as peer tutoring or those which provides effective feedback to learners).

The range of impact identified in these studies suggests that it is not whether technology is

used (or not) which makes the difference, but how well the technology is used to support

teaching and learning. There is no doubt that technology engages and motivates young

people. However, this benefit is only an advantage for learning if the activity is effectively
aligned with what is to be learned. It is, therefore, the pedagogy of the application of

technology in the classroom which is important: the how rather than the what. This is the

crucial lesson emerging from the research.”

Statement of the problem

1. What are the advantages of digital technology to learning?

2. How will digital technology improve learning and quality of educational system?

Significance of the study

This study is conducted to determine and identify the various advantages of digital technology to

learning in a classroom set-up. Furthermore, the study conducted also considers the significance of the

results of contain groups in the society. The researches have in mind that the accurate results of this

study would give a vital role to people involved and can further improve the quality of education in ways

one may or may not perceive. The researchers have included the following groups that would best

benefit from the study. To the students, this study is significant because it would provide each of you the

insight of how traditional and digital learning differ in terms of effectivity. To the teachers and schools

administrations, this study is important because when technology is integrated into lessons, students

tend to be more interested in the subjects they are studying. It improves knowledge retention students

who are engaged and interested in things they are studying, tend to have a better knowledge retention.

To the Future Researchers, this study is important to future researchers for this may be used as a basis

in the conduct of another study similar to this. The results of the study may be beneficial for the data

gathering and information-seeking in the future.

Review of Related Literature and Studies (RRL)

This chapter focus of the present chapter is to review the research work that has already done in

their studies of Digital Learning Technology, so as to gain understanding with the advantages of Digital

Learning in Schools. In exploration, we find new idea, new knowledge, even develop new substances,

gadgets, equipment, process or procedures, imagination and skill is employed by the researcher. The

digital learning, in technology are needs of student for a better fuller education which is the concern of

the research.

Related Literature

ICF Consulting Services LTD, Scottish Government. “Literature Review on the Impact of Digital

Technology on learning teaching”. This study is designed to help inform the development of a strategy

for digital learning and teaching by providing evidence of how and why digital learning and teaching can

benefit learners, teachers and schools. It also aims to identify the conditions that lead to its successful

implementation and any differences between primary and secondary settings. In particular it focuses on

how digital technologies can support and contribute to five specific educational priorities: raising

attainment, tracking inequalities and promoting inclusion, improving transitions into employment,

enhancing parental engagement and improving the efficiency of the education system.

M2 Communications Ltd “Information Communications Technology (ICT) Investment Boost

Secondary Schools”. They found that there was a consistent trend for in schools with IT resources to

achieve better grades for English, math, and science. It also indicated that schools that used Digital

Technology to supports a particular subject, tended to achieve better in that subject than schools which

did not use Digital Technology.

Dalton Woodard, in his study “Computers in School”. Asserts that training is directed at changing

people’s knowledge, experience, skills and attitudes. The scarcity of adequately trained and experienced

analyst, software engineers, systems and network managers, restrains Information Communication
Technology development education system in Uganda. He emphasized the importance of training for

adoption and diffusion of computers in schools

Jane Carrol, in her study “Technology to Support Teacher Development”. In this study it had shown

that improving the quality of an education system depends upon teachers training and development. She

argues that teachers should be trained to view Digital Technology as a resource and to use in classroom

activities, whilst earlier added that education authorities are responsible for teacher training

Cuban (2001) investigated study on “High access use of Technologies in High Schools”. He found

that teachers who used computers in their classrooms largely continued their customary practice, a very

few fundamental changes in the dominant mode of teacher centered instruction have occurred

occasional to serious use of computers in their classes had impact on routine teaching. He noted that

the overwhelming majority of teachers employed the technology to innovate. In his interview with the

teacher’s he found that the teachers that their teaching had indeed changed because of their use in

digital technologies. Changes include planning more efficiently, communicating with colleagues and

parents far more via internet, securing education materials from the internet, having an additional tool in

their customary set of teaching practice, and seeing students access to information as a phenomenal

enhancement to their teaching.

Consulting Services LTD, conducted survey on “Framework for Multimedia Resources”. They found

clear evidence that students appropriated Digital Technologies as tools to construct an understanding of

the teaching learning process in science. Being able to access and revisit resources over time had the

potential to strengthen effectiveness and heighten student’s interest in science teaching. Although the

project included pre-service and in service teachers/ the experience of using CD ROM in teaching and

learning applies equally well in primary and secondary schools.

Edwin Foster, in his study “Relationship between computer use in the classroom and two

independent variables: Beliefs about computer competence and administrative support”, found that the

faculty’s belief not computer competence was the greatest predictor of their use of computers in the
classroom. Therefore, teachers should develop their competence in Digital Technologies skills through

training based on the educational goals they want to accomplish in order to use in Digital Technologies

to teaching.

Jessy Valdez, in her study “Pupil Perspectives on the Contribution of Digital Technologies to

Teaching and Learning in Secondary Schools”. He found that students viewed Digital Technologies as

helpful in task and presentations, and also useful in refining project reports and trial options. They

associated Digital Technology with change in the study environment and classroom relations. Digital

Technologies raised interest and increased motivation on their part.

Rodney Tyler, in his study “Factors Effecting Teachers Adoption of Technology in classroom in

Taiwan” found that many teachers share beliefs that educational technology or digital technology could

promote learning and that the use of technology is desirable. He also reported that teacher’s with high

technological skills are somehow very well when it comes on teaching in the classrooms. Teachers

understand the enabling conditions of certain technologies in order to engage students in Digital

Technology learning successfully.

Summary of Review of Related Literature

As observed from the related literature from various researchers collected from the secondary

resource i.e. internet, it shows that to a large extent Digital Technology implementation in developing.

Most studies indicate that to a large extent, cause was very high implementation in institutions of higher

learning as supported by the researchers. For the case of Digital Learning Technology support, most

researchers suggested that to a large extent these advantage of Digital Learning Technology

Implementation.

By analyzing and synthesizing the different ways of classifying and categorizing Digital Technology

usage in the classrooms, the literature informs that a person of using Digital Technology in teaching and

learning. Students who exposed to school Digital Technology programs learned better than children not

exposed. Also, Digital learning Technology was found to make school more interesting when comes to
teaching and learning and also when students participated in the programs, programs were more

effective.

Majority of the students and teachers had positive reaction to advantages of Digital learning

technology. Teachers believed that teaching through Digital technology is better than traditional way of

teaching. Whenever teachers use follow up activities, student’s attitudes toward Digital Technology were

found higher. The above all research findings revealed that Digital Technology by and large have been

utilized in comprehensive manner in society for the benefit of the students. The utilization of Digital

learning Technology with in the classroom seems to be somehow high.
