Share your experiences where your desires took over you and you
behaved unethically.
At its simplest, ethics is a system of moral principles. They affect how people make decisions
and lead their lives. Ethics is concerned with what is good for individuals and society and is
also described as moral philosophy.
Ethical behaviour is behaviour that is appropriate. It is based on morals. Ethical behaviour is
the right way to behave. It is choosing the right and good. Ethical behaviour is when someone
is being on his or her best behaviour. All of their actions and words are following good moral
principles.
People enjoy being around others who have a good ethical behaviour. It is the behaviour that
is morally accepted as ‘good’, ‘right’ in a particular setting. Ethical behaviour refers to that
conduct that is beyond reproach and is in accordance to the laid down standards of a society,
organization or institution.
Unethical behaviour is any behaviour that goes against the norms of the society in which
you are living.
Everyone faces ethical dilemmas at some point or the other in his/her life. More often than
not in our lifetime we are forced to make a difficult trade-off between what ought to be
done ethically and what we desire to do. It is a tough call to make and sometimes our
desires take over us and we behave unethically.
Here are some experiences where our desires took over us and we behaved unethically.
Incident 1:

There have been some instances in my life where I behaved unethically while being fully aware
that my conduct is Unethical. I would like to share one of such incidents here.
I used to study in a Local Government Funded School during my High School which was a bit
far from my home. Due to Distance, I used to take a DTC bus to School. We all had our Student
Concessional Bus Passes issued from Our School, which had a validity of about 5 months
from the Date of issue.
We were a group of about 5 friends and we always went to school together. Whenever we
boarded the bus, we never had to take the bus ticket.
Our Bus passes were due to renew during the month of December but all of us forgot to renew
our passes and carried on travelling in the bus while being unaware of the facts that our passes
had expired. One day, a ticket checker boarded the bus and while he checked our passes, we
got to know that our Bus Passes had expired and we needed to renew them. Ticket Checker
was a decent person and being a reasonable person, He told us to get the passes renewed
on the same day itself and Purchase a Bus ticket until our Bus passes were renewed. We
thanked him and Moved on to our Destination.
Next day, when we boarded the bus in the morning and travelled to School, None of us
purchased a Bus ticket while being fully aware that our Bus Passes had expired and we were
required to Purchase a Bus Ticket. Though we were all aware of our Unethical Deed, we all
did it with the confidence that if someone objects, we’d have an excuse. Luckily, No ticket
Checker boarded that day and when Conductor asked us to Purchase the ticket, we said we
had Bus Pass and he He too did not object as we were Regular Students of that Route. Later
we got our passes Renewed and Continued onward with our Daily Routine.
Here we violated the Ethical code of Truthfulness, Provided wrong information to Conductor
and we had the malicious intent of Lying if we were caught.

Incident 2:

When I was in 12th class I used to go tuition on weekdays, I and all my friends were very
serious towards studies and I think our parents were even more. In the same year Salman
Khan starring “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” movie was released which becomes super hit, so me and
all my friends wanted to watch the movie in cinema hall but we know that there were a lot of
chances that our parents wouldn’t allow us to watch the movie. So we planned that we would
tell our parents that there is extra class of 6 hours on coming Sunday. In advance I checked
the timing of shows so that we know at what time we had to reach the cinema hall.
On Sunday we did according to our plan and reached to watch the movie at the right time, we
enjoyed the show, plot of the movie was awesome that we even didn’t remember how 2 hour
43 minute passed. After that we come back to our home on time after some silly discussions
on movie.
Later, I realised that my desire controlled my decision and compelled me to behave
unethically,
So I decided that I must not watch any movie till 12th board exams and I should not allow my
desire to distract me from my goals.
This was a violation of ethical code of truthfulness and Honesty to my purpose as I rather than
going for the class which was my ultimate goal, I deviated from it and did not give my 100% to
the task.

Incident 3:

Much of our lives we are faced with situations where we come across the opportunity to make
ethical and unethical decisions or opinions. There was an incident once during my school life
wherein I behaved in an unethical manner. This happened when I studied in class 8. I used to
study in a convent school which was famous for its discipline and strict dress code. Since I
was a sincere student of my class, I was appointed the prefect by the class teacher. Also I
was entrusted with the duty of the fine in charge of my class. I was given the responsibility of
checking uniform and nails of my fellow classmates and charge them with fines whenever they
were at fault. I also had the duty of maintaining the fine register which was provided by my
class teacher.

I used to do my duties diligently, but one day, my friend Alicia had long nails. She requested
me to not to fine her as she was a good friend of mine. I faced the dilemma to choose one
between friendship and my duty. I decided to help her and ignored her folly. I now know I made
a wrong decision by misusing my authority and not fulfilling my duties. Thereafter, she and my
other few friends became repeated offenders and would often not comply with the specified
dress code. Soon, I realized my mistake and warned to report them. After that I decided not
to be biased with my friends anymore. I never did anything like that again and even fined my
friends when they were at fault.

Conclusion:

Many times in our lives we face situations where our moral character is tested. In such
circumstances, we must act in accordance with the ethical behaviour and not let our desires
take over our inner conscience.
