What is Quadratic Equation?

- In algebra, a quadratic equation is

any equation having the form
where x represents an unknown,
and a, b, and c represent known
numbers, with a ≠ 0. If a = 0, then
the equation is linear, not
quadratic, as there is no term.

- A quadratic equation is an equation

of the second degree, meaning it
contains at least one term that is
squared.

The standard form is

ax² + bx + c = 0 with a, b, and c
being constants, or numerical
coefficients, and x is an unknown
variable.

One absolute rule is that the first

constant "a" cannot be a zero.
What is Factoring?

- In mathematics, factorization or
factoring consists of writing a number
or another mathematical object as a
product of several factors, usually
smaller or simpler objects of the same
kind.

- For example, 3 × 5 is a factorization of

the integer 15, and is a factorization of
the polynomial x² – 4

Here are some examples:

1. 2x2 + 5x + 3 = 0

In this one

A = 2, b = 5, c = 3

This one is a little more tricky:

2. x2 - 3x = 0

Where is a? well a = 1, as we don’t

usually write ”1x2”

b=3

and c = 0, is not shown.

3. 5x – 3 = 0

This is not a quadratic equation

because it is missing x2

(in other words a = 0, which means

it can’t be quadratic)

Example:

Find the Solution of x2 + 9x = -8 by

factoring.

a. Transform the equation into

standard form ax2 + bx + c = 0

b. Factor the quadratic expression

x2 + 9x + 8.

x2 + 9x + 8 = 0  (x + 1)(x + 8) = 0

c. Apply the zero product property by

setting each factor of the quadratic
expression equal to 0.

(x + 1) (x + 8) = 0 

x + 1 = 0; x + 8 = 0
d. Solve each resulting equation.

x + 1 = 0  x + 1 – 1 = 0 -1
x = -1

x+8=0x+8–8=0–8
x=-8

e. Check the values of the variable

obtained by substituting each in the
equation x2 + 9x = -8.

For x = 1:

x2 +9x = - 8

( -1 )2 + 9 ( - 1 ) = - 8

1–9=-8
- 8=-8

For x = - 8

x2 +9x = - 8

( - 8 )2 + 9 ( - 8 ) = - 8

64 – 72 = - 8
- 8=-8
Both values of x satisfy the given
equation. So the equation x2 + 9x = - 8
Is true when x = -1 or when x = -8.
2. Activity

The teacher will assign some group

activity for them to motivate to cooperate with
their respective group.

- Solve the equation, factor the

quadratic expression.

- Equate each factor to 0.

- Solve each resulting equation.

- Check the values of the variables

obtained by substituting each in
the equation 9x2 – 4 = 0.

9x2 – 4 = 0
3. Analysis

- The teacher will ask questions about

the activity.

1. How did you factor quadratic

expression?
2. How would you know if the factors
you got are the correct ones?
What is Quadratic Equation?
In algebra, a quadratic equation is any equation having the form where x represents an unknown, and a, b, and c represent known numbers,
with a ≠ 0. If a = 0, then the equation is linear, not quadratic, as there is no term.

Standard form of Quadratic Equation

ax2 + bx + c = 0
Here are examples of quadratic equations in the standard form (ax² + bx + c = 0):
1. 6x² + 11x - 35 = 0
2. 2x² - 4x - 2 = 0
3. -4x² - 7x +12 = 0
4. 20x² -15x - 10 = 0

Here are examples of quadratic equations lacking the linear coefficient or the "bx":
1. 2x² - 64 = 0
2. x² - 16 = 0
3. 9x² + 49 = 0
4. -2x² - 4 = 0

Here are examples of quadratic equations lacking the constant term or "c":
1. x² - 7x = 0
2. 2x² + 8x = 0
3. -x² - 9x = 0
4. x² + 2x = 0
What is polynomial?
An expression of more than two algebraic terms, especially the sum of several terms that contain different powers of the same variable(s).
The equations formed with variables and exponents and coefficients are called as polynomial equations.

What is Coefficients?
A numerical or constant quantity placed before and multiplying the variable in an algebraic expression (e.g. 4 in 4x y).
