Tongue Twister

Definition
A word, phrase or sentence difficult to articulate because of succession of similar consonantal
sounds (Meriam Webster Dictionary)

History
Beberapa orang beranggapan bahwa Peter yang dimaksud yaitu ahli hortikultura Perancis
abad ke-18 Pierre Poivre. Jadi, Poivre adalah bahasa Prancis untuk "Pepper," Piper adalah bahasa
Latin untuk "Peer " dan nama terakhir Inggris yang khas, dan lelaki itu dikenal karena
menyelundupkan cengkeh dari pulau yang kaya Rempah-rempah di zamannya. As a renowned
gardener, Poivre may very well have pickled peppers (lada acar) with those stolen cloves, but we
don’t actually know for sure.

Benefit

1. They strengthen and stretch the muscles involved in speech

This muscle exercise leads to clearer pronunciation, clearer speech patterns, and helps rectify
some of the hardest sounds for you. They’re also just fun, making learning pronunciation –
something that can be quite frustrating – more enjoyable.

2. They show you which sounds are difficult for you

Depending on your native language and your own strengths and weaknesses, some sounds will
be harder for you than others. Tongue twisters can really highlight which sounds you’re
struggling with. You may get stuck on the same sound again and again; this is a sign to focus on
that sound.

Moreover, you may already be aware of sounds that are challenging for you. For example,
speakers of Korean and Japanese tend to have difficulty with the l and r sounds. So, you already
know that you should work on these sounds. Try practicing Red lorry, yellow lorry and Red
blood, bad blood.
3. They are a great warm up

Even if you’re a native speaker or you’ve mastered English pronunciation, tongue twisters are a
great warm-up exercise before you make a presentation, speak in public, teach a class, lead a
meeting, act, and more!

4. Not only train your pronunciation but also fluency and expression.
For example, you say this in front of mirror

There was a fisherman named Fisher

who fished for some fish in a fissure.
Till a fish with a grin,
pulled the fisherman in.
Now they’re fishing the fissure for Fisher.

Example

1. “Kakak, kok kuku kaki kakak-kakakku kaku-kaku, kak?”

2. Satu ribu, dua biru, tiga ribu, empat biru, lima ribu, enam biru, tujuh ribu, delapan biru,
sembilan ribu, sepuluh biru, ... (terus sebanyak-banyaknya) Keledai makan kedelai di
kedai.
3. Javanese tongue twister: Kiro kiro karso karo karto kuro sopo

1. Peter Piper
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers?
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
2. She Sells Sea-Shells
She sells sea-shells on the sea-shore.
The shells she sells are sea-shells, I’m sure.
For if she sells sea-shells on the sea-shore
Then I’m sure she sells sea-shore shells.
