Bouillon, Bertrand. “Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) - causes, symptoms & treatment.”
This video by Bertrand Bouillon called, “Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) - causes,
symptoms & treatment.” on Youtube discusses generalized anxiety disorder and the symptoms,
thought processes, and how to get help. This source explains the information while drawing it all
out as the video progresses. This makes it easy to understand for visual and auditory learners.
The purpose of this video is to educate students or anyone interested. From start to beginning it
goes through all the steps of what GAD is, the symptoms and the effects, for example, “Anxiety
causes impairment in everyday activities” (Bouillon). The author informs us how to diagnose,
“Diagnosing GAD is aided by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders”
(Bouillon). And lastly how it can be treated or where the audience can go to for help if necessary.
This Youtube video has very good ethos (Credibility). The account this clip came from is called
“Osmosis” which is described as, “Your Personal Learning Assistant for Health Sciences.”
Knowing it’s coming from a professional account it builds the audience’s trust for the creator.
Their logos (logic) is shown through the facts given throughout the video. The tone is serious
and educational, and he talks with real intent for the subject. It is also only a year old, so the
1
information given is valid. While this is an academic source, it doesn’t have much pathos. This
could be problematic because some viewers might want more of an emotional connection rather
I will use this in my essay because it gives a good summary of what GAD is, how it is found, the
effects of it and how to treat it. With my question “Does Generation Z have more anxiety than
previous generations and why?” This source could help with my “why” section as well as help
inform my readers the general idea of what anxiety is. I plan to use this as a statistical source and
combine it with a source that has more pathos in it to help strengthen it.
Chavis, Kelly. “Warning: Reading this on a smartphone may cause anxiety, researchers say.” Los
Angeles Times. Los Angeles Times. 7 June 2019. Web. 7 Oct. 2019.
The article written by Los Angeles Times called, “Warning: Reading this on a smartphone may
cause anxiety, researchers say.” The author, Kelly Chavis, talks about how social media and the
constant attention to smartphones is one of the main sources of anxiety. The data in this article
was mainly focused on middle schoolers and high schoolers. It gives several examples of
experiments shown in schools and how this might be a cause to anxiety. The author states the
Chavis does a good job of using logos (logic) with facts and numbers about the issue. And
Pathos can be seen by bringing in emotion through the students it’s affecting and the parents who
are seeing their kids go through it. The articles credibility (ethos) is shown through the studies
2
from researchers as well as being apart of a well known and credible newspaper. One problem
with the article is, most of the information is coming from the Eastern states not the whole
country.
This source fits within my topic of anxiety increasing within millennials and why. I could use
this as one of my “whys” for this question. It gives good information about current students
which would be the millennials. I like that this article includes personal experiences as well as
studies and facts because I would like to use all of these things in my synthesis essay. This article
is easy to understand and relate to personally which could come to my convenience. This article
will be backed up with other sources about the social media issue to ensure it’s credibility.
De Recat, Olivia. Cartoon. New Yorker. The New Yorker Collection. 21 Jan. 2019. Web. 22 Oct.
2019.
This cartoon image by Olivia de Recat is a representation of how people with anxiety are always
overthinking every situation. The image is an alarm clock with a stressed out face on it and
surrounding the clock are speech bubbles saying, “Oh, you’re DEFINITELY gonna be late.”
“And what if there’s TRAFFIC??” “You know everyone’s going south at this hour.” “Have you
taken into account that you haven’t even SHOWERED yet??” and lastly, “You’re supposed to
bring the cups, remember? There’s a party going on right now with NO CUPS.” This person in
the cartoon is constantly thinking of all the worst possibilities and stressed out over things that

This cartoon is mostly pathos, meaning based on emotion by using language dramatically for
example, bolding and italicizing key words. Doing this, the viewer’s eyes go immediately to
those words and are curious. The ethos (credibility) can be seen through the publisher.
Considering it has been published in The New Yorker Cartoon Bank which is a well known
name, the artist receives credibility from that. This source lacks logos (logic) which could make
this cartoon an anecdotal fallacy because it is based on personal experience not facts or data.
I like this cartoon. To me, it is very relatable. I plan to use this cartoon with my multimedia
source. The video I chose is completely based on logos and ethos so I plan to combine it with my
cartoon considering it is mostly pathos so I can get all the views for my reader. When the video
mentions how most people with Generalized Anxiety Disorder get overwhelmed in situations
where it is not needed, I will put in my cartoon to correlate the two sources.
PIORE, ADAM. “Generation Z Gets to Work.” Newsweek Global, vol. 172, no. 19, June 2019,
p. 22. EBSCOhost,
search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=pwh&AN=136936631&site=pov-live.
This article by Adam Piore, “Generation Z Gets to Work.” was published in the Newsweek
Global on June 19, 2019. It talks about some reasons as to why the Z Generation has an
increased amount of mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. A big reason the author
mentions is money, when people graduate college, they have tons of student debt and all of the
other pressures of making it in this society. The article also relates the Z Generation to Millenials
by informing the audience that, if people went to college they were guaranteed a job whereas
4
now all those that go to college aren’t guaranteed a job and the market is much harder to break
into. Although it also speaks of the advantages that Generation Z has from seeing earlier
The article does a good job of stating facts and statistics which builds up it’s logos (logic). The
article is dated in the current year 2019 which makes it more reliable. It is also from a safe
database which builds the credibility (ethos) of the author and article. The source doesn’t have a
lot of pathos it is more based on information about the Z Generation, it doesn’t get emotional. A
problem with this article is, it uses personal experiences which could come across as an
anecdotal fallacy which is using personal experience rather than evidence. The tone used in this
article is, formal but gets more conversational with the personal experiences.
I plan to use this source for the statistics of growth in anxiety and also for the reasons why the Z
Generation has the increase of mental disorders. I think this article is good too because it tells the
audience that through the anxiety there are also positives to the stress. I like the different things
mentioned and it has a lot of information that could be useful for my question, “Why does the Z
Generation have more anxiety than previous generations?” This article is reliable and will be a
good source because of the experiences as well as the use of logos and ethos.
Donohue, Mary. “How to get along with Boomers, GenXers and Millennials.” Youtube.
5
This Ted Talk by Mary Donohue published on December 13, 2016 called, “How to get along
with Boomers, GenXers and Millennials” talks about the difference between the different
generations spanning from the Baby Boomers to the Z Generation. Her main point is that every
generation grew up with a different culture and this makes it difficult for them to relate to one
another. The Boomers are auditory learners because they had radio and newspapers. The
GenXers are visual learners because of television, Millenials are action based because
technology is based on action, and lastly, Gen Z was raised with technology and they prefer easy
and efficient. Because each of these generations differ, it makes it harder to work together in a
work environment. Donahue educates the audience how to work with different generations and
This video is based on pathos because it doesn’t state specific facts, she used emotion through
her tone and relating to the audience with stories. Donohue gives her presentation very
confidently which makes it seem like she knows what she is talking about. This adds to her
pathos and helps her ethos. Mary Donohue’s ethos or credibility is given through her
sophisticated look and for being on a well known program, Ted Talks. Logos is the least present
because she doesn’t quote specific facts. This could be an anecdotal fallacy considering it is
mostly based on others personal experiences. Her purpose is to inform the audience about the
differences in the generations and how to get along with each generation.
I plan to use this source as a section of the different viewpoints from critics, such as how each
generation is seen. Since this video talks about how other generations see the Z generation, it
6
helps get a different perspective. The Boomers and the Z Generation are what I am comparing in
my essay so I can use evidence from this Ted Talk to mention the differences and how everyone
can work together. I will mention this in my essay then refute against it with my claim or with
another source.
