Before I dive into my review, I want to
thank XS Sights and their excellent
customer service folks for making this
review possible. They’re a great outfit.
XS Sights announced the RAM™
(Radioactive Material) Night Sights 8
October, 2019. In the company’s press
announcement, Zack Kinsley, XS Sights
Marketing Manager revealed the design
goal as a “purpose driven tool fine-tuned
for Law Enforcement.” So, what does law
enforcement need?

When an armed response is required,
officers are under stress and need to
acquire and engage the target before that
individual has a chance to injure them or
others. The key to success is a quick and
accurate shot placement; law enforcement
is not looking for group sizes at 25 yards.
So, in my review I focus on how well the
sights perform under varying light
conditions; I try to answer the question,
“Would I want them on my pistol?”
If you are new to night sights, you need to
know that there are no shortages of
approaches by different manufacturers.
There are tritium only approaches,
combinations of fiber optic and tritium
inserts, fiber optic only and I rest with that.
Tritium will glow in the dark; fiber optic
sights use their glass-like properties to
collect and concentrate light through a
convex lens and fiber / tritium designs
leverage the two technologies to produce a
bright sight picture in a variety of light
conditions. XS Sights RAM night sights use
the later design.
Here’s how it all works:
In bright daylight the fiber optic material
lights up, making the front sight post highly
visible.

XS Sight’s design enhances the sight picture light. XS makes the sight available in orange
further using their proprietary Ember™ or green.
Glow Dot
Coming out of your holster and properly
presenting the weapon, places that very
bright front dot smack dab in your line of
sight.

This is a fiber-like material that

concentrates and reflects bright light. The
end result is a much brighter and larger
front sight dot.

Another feature of the RAM Sight is the

abundance of daylight surrounding the front
sight post; so, finding the front sight is made
easier, as is target acquisition. I measured the
rear notch at 0.17 inches and the front sight
post at 0.15 inches in width, so you have a
generous 0.01 inches on either side of the front
sight post.

The relative size of the front sight dot

compared to the rear sight dots is what
makes the XS Sight RAM such a fast sight.
The rear sight is blacked out to increase
contrast against that very bright front sight. The front sight height measured at 0.22 inches
with more heights available in the near future.
The company’s Ember™ Glow Dot
technology absorbs ambient light and glows In low light conditions, the sight’s tritium insert
brightly in bright light and glows in low generates a sufficiently energetic glow to
charge the Ember™ Glow Dot, presenting a

noticeable although subdued orange or green
glow.
In complete darkness (i.e. an absence of street
lights or other sources of ambient lighting) the
tritium inserts takeover presenting the
traditional green three dot sight picture.
XS Sights designed the RAM sight to address a
number of problems, which they enumerate
below:
 Confusing the front dot with one of the
rear sight dots when under stress
The brightly colored Ember Glow Dot in
the RAM front sight is a much brighter
color which differentiates the front dot
from the two rear dots.
 The 2-dot tritium rear sight glowing
brighter than the front sight drawing the
eyes there instead of towards the
downrange threat.

The Ember front sight is brighter than
the rear tritium lamps.
 Tight sight pictures
RAM Night Sights use a notch that is
15% wider than the front sight, allowing
more visible light around the front
sight. This makes it easier to see the
front sight in changing light conditions
and when shooting on the move, aiding
in sight alignment and increasing
accuracy.
Other desirable features include the sight’s
overhang which reduces rear sight glare in
bright sunlight and a high rear sight ledge that
facilitates one-handed slide manipulation.
In closing, I have to admit that I was extremely
impressed by the XS Sight RAM Night Sights.
The all steel construction makes them durable.
The high visibility in bright light and low light
conditions makes these sights extremely fast.
The color you choose is a personal choice but
during my testing, I was able to conclude that
the amber dot is brighter in daylight while the
green dot works best in low lights.
