truancy.

What are the negative effects of absenteeism among the students of Grade 10 –Pine of
Pedro Oloy “N. Roa Sr. High School?

Absenteeism is commonly known as the practice of regularly staying away from work or
school without good reason. Absenteeism is also a problem from the old, old times
likely during the times of the old people. It has been long discussed within the people
of the government especially in DepEd. During the times of the senior citizens there
were frequent cases of absenteeism especially at the barrios because of some certain
reasons like they were told to look after their livestock, another reason is that their
parents don’t give emphasis on education, the accessibility of the school is with
hindrance or students really don’t mind going to school and were bored of the lessons
presented by the teacher.

Again, absenteeism offers such disadvantage for a student’s social and academic status,
as it was stated that going to school is crucially important for a student’s education and
social skills. If they started this habit it might as well affect one or two more factors in
personal development also.

The goal of the group is to let the students be fully aware of the effects of absenteeism
both to their academic and social status as well as to let the students know the other
consequences of absenteeism and how to find solutions involving the topic on how to
prevent it.

Why should we give importance to this study?

As what that has been mentioned earlier, absenteeism creates a large gap in the personal, mental,
and social development of a student. It has also been a problem for most of the schools and
educative departments.
What is absenteeism?

There are plenty of words to define absenteeism but to make it clear, it is a habit of
staying away from school without providing genuine or any reason for not attending
classes. It is also a truant behavior that negatively affects the performance among the
students.

In such case, one way of knowing absenteeism deeper is to know the CAUSES.

Causes of Absenteeism

Absenteeism is caused by many factors as such as:

1. Phobic Adolescence: During this stage in the growth of a teen, there are a lot of
fears developed as a result of physical changes of the body for example growth
of pimples, turbulent emotions, etc. Although this sounds over exaggerating, there
are some cases that prove this otherwise and scare teens away from school as
they also tend to be more self- conscious.

2. Lack of interest: Students could be lacking interest in the study, which could
result to difficulty in grasping the content hence, the outcome of lack of interest.
As what have been observed, this have been said to be true, it may be because
they can’t cope up with the topic and lose interest or it is too much for an
average student to handle especially when everyone has matters to fix.

3. Teacher approach: The approach used by teachers may not be understood by the
student and this could lead them to lose interest in school. Other students also
stated that teachers sometimes approach them during classes with an aggressive
attitude that causes the students to develop rebellious attitude also. This is only a
possible contributing factor.

4. Diseases: Some diseases like asthma which requires attention and care as well as
an environment that is warm and not dusty could make students remain at home.
Other ailments such as colds, sore eyes, chicken pox or long term ailments could
also be factors.

5. Entertainment: Accessibility of entertainment facilities like cinemas, malls, internet

cafes, billiards, etc. could divert attention of some students. Large pocket money
given by parents is a contributing factor as well. It arouses their interest that
leads to skipping their classes.
Based on an actual attendance record book, people who excel in class are the ones who doesn’t
frequently absents from class while those students who flunked down are the people who
practice or does absences in class. This is a fact that their grades remain inferior and what
absenteeism has done to their studies will keep them low until their future is also affected.

As what the graph illustrates , Student A has higher percentage of his/ her academic
grades than Student B who has lower academic grades. Student A has a higher rate of
no absences which explains his/ her higher grades, while Student B absents more
frequently thus leading to lower academic grades and affected school life.

Absenteeism can lead to many factors that may affect our lives in the near future
especially for high school students.
