THE GREAT MOSQUE OF ALGIERS: AFRICA'S

LARGEST MOSQUE

T
owering over Algiers, the finished Djamaa el Djazaïr also known as The Great Mosque of Algiers is certainly a
striking architectural landmark. Constructed by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC)
the US $1bn Great Mosque is set to break new global records.

Construction of the mosque began in August 2012 after the construction contract was won
by CSCEC. The design was done by German architects KSP Juergen Engel Architekten
and engineers Krebs und Kiefer International.

Commissioned by former Algerian President Aziz Bouteflika, construction of the

mosque depended on foreign expertise and labor. The project employed about
2,300 construction workers, engineers and managers. An additional 17,000
people were employed indirectly as subcontractors.

The architectural masterpiece

The mosque sits on a site covering 400,000 square meters, overlooking the
Mediterranean Sea. The prayer hall has a capacity of 37,000 worshippers,
while the structure including the compound can house up to 120,000
worshippers and has parking space for 7,000 cars. The complex also
houses a Koranic school, a park, a library, staff housing area, a fire station,
a museum of Islamic art, and a research centre on the history of Algeria.

The mosque also has a 265m tall minaret (a slender tower used to call
Muslims to prayer), which makes it the tallest building in Africa. It also
houses an observation deck atop the minaret, which has 37 floors. The
mosque is designed to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 and
the structure has been specially processed to resist corrosion. The main
prayer hall has 618 octagonal columns serving as support pillars and 6km
of calligraphic writing engraved with a laser system. The dome of the
prayer hall has a diameter of 50m and rises to a height of 70m.

Special emphasis was put on environmental sustainability while designing

can also save on the expense of contractors bonds over time.
Laser and Drone Technology

Technology is also making waves in construction with the help of laser

scanning and drone use. With lasers, construction professionals have
an opportunity to assess site conditions before stepping foot on a new
project, and they can use this information to highlight any hazards or site
issues that may be lying in wait.
Similarly, drones are being used to scan worksites in advance, as well as
monitoring logistics over the course of a project. Each of these functions
of laser scanning and drones is improving the safety of construction sites
each day.

Wearables and Mobile Devices

Finally, the construction industry is being enhanced through the use of

mobile devices and wearable technology among licensed contractors and
subcontractors.

Mobile devices and smartphones are being used more frequently in

the field for an array of tasks. Construction workers are utilizing these
technology devices to document information, share effective and fast
communications, and prepare for inclement weather or job site conditions.

Wearable technology is also being used to boost safety standards around

each project, and create learning opportunities through virtual reality for
new contractors or subcontractors. The combination of these devices helps
construction workers remain efficient on the job while also promoting
safety and learning along the way.

Technology in construction is not a new sight, but it is a growing trend

that lays the groundwork for more efficient projects. Contractors in
construction should embrace the ever-changing landscape of tech in the
industry if they want to remain competitive and ahead of the curve in the
business.

DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
IN JAPAN SINCE 1948
Hitachi Koki Co., Ltd, a leading manufacturer of power tools and
life-science equipment, has changed its corporate name to Koki
Holdings Co., Ltd., effective June 1, 2018, and has rebranded its full
line of power tools known as HITACHI and/or Hitachi Koki under the
new HiKOKI®(pronounced “hai-koh-key”) name, effective October 1,
2018. The name changes are in line with the company’s ambitious
international growth strategy, aimed at ensuring sustainable growth
while expanding business in the nearly 100 countries in Hitachi
Koki’s global network.

Hitachi Koki’s world-class advanced technologies have produced

reliable and innovative products throughout its celebrated 70-year
history, which serve as the basis for its new partnership with
KKR,one of the world’s preeminent private equity groups. Through
the new partnership, Koki Holdings is streamlining operations and
accelerating investment in organic development and acquisitions to
enhance its global businesses as a worldwide leading manufacturer.

“We have delivered award-winning innovation in manufacturing with a solid business performance for
over 70 years, and now is the time for us to focus on expansion as a truly global company while
remaining rooted to our Japanese tradition,” said Osami Maehara, President, Hitachi Koki. “We have
fully committed to accelerating growth alongside a dynamic new partner in KKR as we pursue our goal
to become a global leader in power tools and life-science instruments. We are confident we can take
our business to the next level with the support of all our employees and partners worldwide, and the
revamping of the brand name is the first step to making this possible. We look forward to continuing to
build a brand that exceeds the expectations of discerning customers around the world.”

The HiKOKI brand was created to embody the three core competencies of the company, including its
innovative technologies that give rise to products with superior performance, the reliability of its products
and services backed by a 70-year company history, and the potential for new business growth
represented through the new partnership with KKR. For ease of pronunciation, the new brand name uses
a lowercase “i” in its first syllable, and includes the implicit numeral “1” to express the company’s
commitment to providing customers with the “No. 1” products on the market, and its aim to achieve
“No. 1” global status.

The new corporate name, Koki Holdings Co., Ltd., is designed to maintain continuity with its current
name, while also reflecting the multiple brands it encompasses around the world, and accelerate
investment in acquisitions to expand its global business.

damage to the wall should be repaired prior to rendering and the surface
has to be clean from dirt and muck. Finally, don’t forget to calculate in
the climate aspect into the equation. An extremely warm climate or a cold
climate should influence the final choice if rendering for your house.

Like we stated earlier, rendering should be done by professionals.

Theoretically speaking, you have the possibility to render yourself but
the cost and effort will exceed the benefits. Not only is the equipment
pricy but you lack the necessary expertise to apply the smooth finishing.
This requires an expert’s hand that has years of rendering experience,
both residential and commercial. Think of the cost of rendering not as
money waste but money well spent since rendering is basically a house

Rendering is a process that is so efficient that you will have to do it only

once every 20 years. Most companies give a guarantee that ensures that
if there isn’t any mechanical damage to the house, the applied coat will
prevent all cracks, chips, and peels. Furthermore, rendering material,
whether it is sand or cement can be colored, so rendering is painting the
house at the same time.

No exterior wall of a house is complete without proper rendering.

Whatever type and color you choose, make sure the rendering company
does a good job so the rendered surface will last for decades to come. The damage caused to the exterior walls is commonly the result of the
local climate and the punishing weather condition
