HISTORY OF BARANGAY LUCSUHIN

1. PREHISTORIC

Legends has it that from the past old days, Lucsuhin has not built its own ways/roads
yet. Lucsuhin is a place where little bodies of water surround its borders. In this little
bodies of water varying sizes of rocks and stones are astray. It was said that to cross the
humble place of Lucsuhin the people must hop over the waters and step on the rocks.
Hence was name Lucsuhin, which in English is defined as “to hop”.

DESCRIPTION OF POLITICS IN LUCSUHIN

Politics, right from when the world built concrete and intellectual ideas and ways of life has
since been essential in nature. In every place, state, nation, or territory politics is an important
factor. In building rules and law that shall shape or bend , depending on the circumstances, a
nations’ way of life and processes politics has always been vital.
In my barangay, the simple and quiet Lucsuhin, politics has always been an important
and a serious topic amongst all, specially the elders. The people takes politics too seriously that
it started to become one of the cause of conflict in the barangay. It was also evident that the
people value loyalty when it comes to politics as well.
Before the election, the people of Barangay Lucsuhin would help the elected barangay
officials of their choosing in the whole course of the election. These elected barangay officials
will choose some voters who they deem is most loyal and entrust with them the help they
need. Months before the elections sparks of misunderstanding and fights among parties will
suddenly occur. This fights usually happen whenever the elected parties are against one
another just beforehand. During the election, the people of Brgy. Lucsuhin will come to the
Barangay’s public elementary school ( Lucsuhin, Elementary, School. The assigned presint in the
barangay) to cast their votes. Several teachers and trusted supporters of each parties will guide
the whole voting process. After voting the people will go straight to the residence of their
favored party and dine there. Preparing foods for the voters has always been a practice of the
politicians in Lucsuhin. After the election, as the name of the wining candidate has finally come
out, their supporters will gather in the elected captain’s house to present some simple
congratulatory words. Some supporters of the opposing party will come as well to congratulate
their new local governing person.
Politics has always been a serious matter and subject. Be it a small or big town or
place, industrial or not, politics is an all too important topic. Barangay Lucsuhin holds an
election like any other places there is.
IV. Economy
MAIN SOURCES OF INCOME

Lucsuhin is a place where there is variety of livelihood present. One of probably the main
source of the people’s income is the sugarcane fields. Sugarcane can be seen all over Lucsuhin’s fields.
Though these sugarcane fields are private the people is still able to get their parts in it. Some are rented
to plant and harvest the sugarcane, some are into the preparation of the fields for planting, while some
takes part in keeping the fields functional and clean. Another source of income in Lucsuhin are
Bamboos. Bamboos are very abundant in this subject place. These Bamboos are gathered by the
Lucsuhenos and are exported to other needing places. There are other various income source existing
on Brgy. Lucsuhin. Some people or families own a sari-sari store. There are at least 20 sari-sari store on
the small place of Lucsuhin. Another source of income are the piggeries. There are few piggeries present
in Lucsuhin, however these piggeries even though small are still labeled as big ventures. These piggeries
are big and supply mostly 100 or more pigs.

Aside from these following income sources, the transportation has also been one of most
Lucsuhenos livelihood. In terms of the transportation, the most domineering are the tricycles. Tricycles
are in demand in Lucsuhin because of its availability and the fact that Lucsuhenos are not too kin of
going out so much. Lucsuhin also has lots of small bridges. The term “to hop” is now applicable to the
transportations instead of the people. Lucsuhin does have good and wide spaced roads, however other
means and types of transportation are incapable of easily passing through this place. The boundaries of
Lucsuhin have narrow spaced roads that is why jeepneys are not a match to this place.Also the roads in
Lucsuhin, specifically the bridges are in high elevation. The way to Lucsuhin is not a plain road. One will
not pass by small normal humps but big ones. Private cars or transportations are also in demand to the
place, transportations like cars, private tricycles, and motorcycles.

BELIEFS AND PRACTICES

a) Superstitions

Superstitions is a belief, it is not based on human reason or scientific knowledge, the future
events may be influenced by one’s behavior in some magical or mystical way. (English
Dictionary; Wiktionary)

The people of Lucsuhin are also firm believers of superstitions. In this part superstitions are
presented in group. Determinants where they are more dominant and obvious.
Determinants are as follows:
1. Wedding
2. Funeral; and
3. others

1) . Weddings
There are various superstitions supporting nuptials.
a. Do not wear or try to fit your (the bride) wedding gown before the wedding.
- Wearing the wedding gown just before the actual wedding is said to bring bad
luck to the to-be-wed and the wedding itself.
b. The to-be-wed couple shall not see each other 24 hours before the wedding.
- Seeing each other (the couple) is a bad luck as said as well. It was said that if
the couple were to see each other before the wedding something strange and
unexpected will happen that will consequently interfere or worst stop the
wedding.
c. The groom should always show up first in the church and be the first to walk, the
groom shall never let their bride step on their foot.
- These two superstitions are the same, they are both beliefs done during a
wedding so, as people say, the groom will not be ordered around and be
dominated by their females.
d. In the reception, the newlyweds shall eat “kalamay”
- Eating “kalamay” together, with arms crossed, the newlyweds are said to live
closely and more intimately as long as they live.
2) . Funeral

Various superstitions also present themselves during the funerals.

a. Do not be too noisy during funerals


- Elders says that too much noise will eventually disturb the dead and have
him/her strained.
b. Do not bring home foods coming from the funeral.
- Bringing home foods from the funeral is a definite must-not-do. It was said
that the dead will follow you home if you ever bring home the foods from his/her
funeral.
c. Visitors shall not wear brightly colored shirts or clothes.
- Visitors shall not wear clothes with the colors red, green, yellow, and anything
brightly colored or eye catching. Colors like white and black are the most
recommended colors.
d. Visitors shall not say “thank you” and “goodbye” to the family hosting the
funeral.
- Saying thank you and goodbye is a must-not-do during funerals. It was
believed that paying gratitude and bidding goodbye to the family of the dead is
rude. Especially saying thank you because it is rude showing gratitude to
mourning people.
e. Never let tears fall on the casket.
- This was also believed as a bad thing. People say that letting tears fall on the
dead’s casket will lead him to being sad in his passing. In the more exaggerated
and fictitious side, falling tears in the casket will cause the dead to being unable
to cross to the other side.
3) Others.
a. Do not sweep the floor or the ground during afternoons or night.
- Sweeping the floor or ground during the evening is said to result to bad luck.
It was said that if one sweep in the evenings good lucks will be swept away off
one’s home together with the dusts and trashes.
b. Do not whistle at night.
- Whistling at night is like calling the bad and the devils in in one’s home.
c. Do not pass money through the windows.
- Passing money through windows is said to be a bad act. Money should be
passed through doors and not widows.
d. Refrain from counting your money or your savings; Do not pour coins from your
wallet or coin purse.
- Counting money regularly will spoil one’s savings. It will stop one’s money to
multiply. This is just the same with getting coins from a purse by pouring out all
inside of it. The money or the coins should be picked and not poured.

b) Practices
a. Siesta
- The people of Lucsuhin values their siesta very much. Men, women, girls, boys,
elderlies, and especially kids shall rest and sleep every afternoon. This has been a
social practice in Lucsuhin as long as its people can remember.
c) Celebrations
a. Fiesta or Feast Day
Patron: Poong Santiago or Saint James
When: May 29
- Lucsuhin celebrates their fiesta in honor of Saint James every May 29. It is one
of the most awaited occasion every year in this place. The people sets a huge
preparation for this day. The people are very fortunate as the feast day is set
every May, which is a great time because the people of Lucsuhin yearly hosts
Flores De Mayo. Flores De Mayo is a practice that has always been done in
Lucsuhin. It is where young girls and boys are given the chance to walk inside the
chapel holding flowers to offer to Mother Mary. Every year different set of boys
and girls are offered this honorable task. Days before the actual feast day Flores
De Mayo is held. One day after the Feast the boys and girls will come out for a
parade in their white dresses and gowns (for female) Barong Tagalog and black
pants (for male). Also, the people of barangay Lucsuhin will start preparing the
foods for their visitors and as offerings to the patron. In the glorious day of the
fiesta activities are held as soon as the barangay woke up. Different bands with
majorettes graces the barangay with the loud and merry sound of their
instruments and outstanding performance of the majorettes. Also’ the street is
full of vendors (of ice creams, toys, pets, etc.). A mass will be held in the local
chapel of Lucsuhin. The difference between Lucsuhin and other Barangays fiesta
is the fact that every family has food preparations. Some lavish, with different
dishes, with caterers, and music while others holds a more simple but heartfelt
celebrations. In the afternoon, the flores de mayo will continue with its second
to the last holding, the chosen boys and girls will once again come out for a
parade along with little children as angels holding an enormous rosary and right I
the middle is a woman also dressed in gown. Along with them is the Reyna Elena
walking in line with the other queens and their escorts, above each one of them
is a flowery arc. This will be witnessed by everybody in the barangay. At night
performances from bands or actors and actresses are held in a made-up stage to
entertain the crowd.
b. Christmas Day
- Christmas Day is one of the most awaited time of the year especially for
children. This is where the people celebrate the birth of the savior Christ. Every
one saves up for the celebration of Christmas. Days before Christmas the people
from the barangay Lucsuhin wholeheartedly attends the Simbang Gabi for the
assigned nine days. On the night before the Christmas Day Children goes outside
of their home to sing Christmas carols to every house they can reach. On the
day of Christmas, the people will attend the mass which will commemorate and
celebrate the birth of the almighty Christ. Back in the Barangay the children and
those young at heart will continue their Christmas galore and pay visit to their
godparents.
c. New Year’s Day
- It is the loudest day of the year. The day when a new year takes over. It is the
day for new beginnings and new goals in life.
d. Birthdays
- The people of Lucsuhin generously celebrate birthdays. Some community
member holds lavish birthday parties, especially those birthdays that is among
ages7, 18 (for women), 21 (for men), and 50. On the other hand some people
celebrate birthdays quite simply, presenting some simple dishes while others
prefer to go out. Each birthday, be it a child, a teen, or an adult’s birthday,
spaghetti is never out of the menu. In a child’s birthday party, some parents or
families prepares games for other kids to make the Birthday much merrier. One
of the practice which never gets old or strained in a birthday party is the drink
up among matured men most especially.
e. Weddings
- Each family has different ways on how they celebrate weddings. Some couple
are wedded by attorneys or mayors, some from the free church weddings, while
some throws an actual wedding holdings with red carpets, doves, sophisticated
receptions and all that. In a wedding the best part is the preparation. There is
the “Bulungan” where both sides decide on every part of the wedding. It is
where they settle the likes and dislikes of both parties and it is where they try to
cope with each other. A day before the wedding, every member of the barangay
openly contributes their help in preparing for the wedding day and cooking the
foods. Men are assighned in a more heavier work, like gathering woods or what
they call “Lawo” and cooking the foods. Women on the other hand are set to
make the sweets like salads, fruit cocktails, leche plan and more. At the night
before, the to-be-wed couple graces the set up party a dance. In the actual
wedding, right after the couples are pronounced as man and wife and as they
return to the wedding reception several is fired to announce the newly
wed.
d) Social Interaction
a. Pakikisama or
- Pakikisama is a valued practice in this barangay. Being a small barangay
everybody tends to personally know everybody. The people takes great care of
their good relationship with one another. In every occasion, be it happy, sad,
simple, or enormous the people never forgets to pay their respect and support
to one another.
b. Utang na Loob
- Along with pakikisama, utang na loob is practiced in the barangay. Whenever
anyone owes someone, materially or not, one should always look up to and be
humble to the person to whom they are in debt. However, it is never
unavoidable to create tension and conflict with another even if this another is
someone you are in debt with. Still, one who is in indebted with another never
stops the respect and gratitude, even though sometimes it is not heartfelt
anymore.
c. Sources of Conflict
- There are several sources of conflict in Lucsuhin, some of the most evident
are:
1) Gossips
- Just like other places and communities gossips is the most evident
source of conflict in Baranagay Lucsuhin. Gossips tend to create
lasting conflicts between community members.
2) Land
- Land ownership is also a root of conflict straining the
peacefulness of the barangay. This mostly happens between
relatives as they tend to fight over their inherited land.
3) Politics
- People fight over politics every time. Fights occur mostly against
the opposite parties. Usually fights over politics is due to opposing
parties spoiling the bad side of one another.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Area of Concern: Education and Literacy Assigned Area: Lucsuhin

Pre-Observation: What do you expect about the status/condition of education and literacy of your
assigned are in the community/barangay. Use the provided survey questionnaire. Include also basic
demographic information about the barangay.

Since one member of the group lives in the assigned area the group has prior information
with regards to the education and literacy concerns of the barangay. It was expected that the members
of the barangay are well endowed in terms of quality education. This is most especially expected among
the young member of the barangay. Also, Lucsuhin has a local elementary school inside the barangay
which is currently being renovated to capacitate additional classrooms and building to contain high
school students. However, as pre-observed, most elderlies are not so lucky to have and to finish their
education. Some members are even illiterates. In addition to this, proving the young member’s literacy,
Lucsuhin also made a good name and recognition in terms of competitions.

During Observation: Look closely. Observe the status/condition of education and literacy of your
assigned area in the community/barangay. Use the provided survey questionnaire. Include also basic
demographic information about the barangay.
In a paragraph or two, express what you feel about the situation which you observed.
