Content : The Cartesian coordinate system

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the student are expected to:
a.) Discuss the Cartesian coordinate system.
b.) Identify the different Quadrant in the Cartesian plane.
c.) Determine how to graph ordered pairs in the Cartesian plane.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: The Cartesian coordinate system
Timeframe: 1 hour
Materials: Manila paper, Marker, Laptop, DLP Projector, Scrambled Letters.
Reference: Book: Intermediate Algebra Textbook for 2nd Year pp. 3-4

III. Procedure

Teacher's Activity Student's Activity

A. Preliminary Activity
a.) Prayer
b.) Greetings
c.) Checking of Attendance
d.) Setting of Standard

What should a good students do when

the teacher is discussing in front?
Ma’am a student should listen, sit
properly and participate.

B. Review

Before we proceed to our topic let's

have a review first.
What did we discuss yesterday?
Ma’am yesterday we discuss about the
aims of the book of the Intermediate
Algebra.
Very Good Alexa!

Okay, Michael can you recite the 4 aims

of the book?
Ma’am the Intermediate Algebra
textbook aims to:
1.) Develop proficiency in Mathematics
skills.
2.) Enhance understanding of
Mathematical concepts and principles.
3.) Improve higher- order thinking skills
and;
4.) Promote effective, self-developed
and productive citizenry.

Very Good Michael!

C. Motivation

Class let's have a game. I will divide the

class into 2 groups. This is the group
one and group 2. I have here a set of
scrambled letters all you need to do is
to arrange this letters into a sentence.
I’m going to give you a hint this
sentence compose of 4 words. Yes Ma’am!
Am I clear class?
( The Cartesian Coordinate System)

D. Activity

How did you find the activity class?

It's fun Ma'am!

Now can you read what is the sentence

that you form ?
“ The Cartesian Coordinate System”

Yes Very Good!

Our topic today is all about the
Cartesian Coordinate System.

In order to aid people locate specific

cities and towns in maps, cartographers
use letters and number grids.
Mathematicians on the other hand used
coordinates to locate specific points on
a graph.

Recall that the Basic form of a

mathematical graph is the number line.

The arrows on the ends indicate that the

line and the numbers extend infinitely in
both directions.

Early in the 17th Century, Rene

Descartes, a French mathematician and
Philosopher, used horizontal and
vertical number lines drawn
perpendicular to each other, to divide
the plane into 4 regions called
quadrants. The four regions, quadrant I
to IV, are named in counterclockwise
direction starting from the upper right
hand region.

( Presenting an image)
Again, Jelo who was that French
mathematician and philosopher named?

Ma’am! Rene Descartes

Very good!

The two number lines are called the X-

axis and Y- axis. The plane that
contains the X and Y axes is called the
coordinate plane. The point at which the
number lines intersect is called the
origin usually denoted by the letter O.

So now I will show you a video

presentation on how to graph an
ordered pair in the coordinate plane.
After watching the video on the same
group you’ll going to present how to
graph ordered pairs in the coordinate
plane base on the video presented.
Here is the manila paper and marker.
Am I clear class? Yes Ma’am!

Presenting Video Presentation

E. Analysis

What do you call the first number or

coordinate of an ordered pairs
corresponds to a number on the X-
axis?

It is called Abscissa.
Very Good!

How about the second ordered pairs

correspond to a number on Y-axis?

It is called Ordinate.

F. Abstract

Why it is important to name the

coordinate of a point in order?

It is important ma’am for example the

ordered pair (5, 4) is different from a
point identified as (4, 5).

G. Application

This time I will group you into 4 you are

going to present the example on page 4
on the book.

Yes ma’am!

IV. Evaluation

This time class we will have a quiz get 1

whole sheet of paper. Test Yourself:
A. Determine the quadrant and
coordinates of the given points.
1. A 5. E 9. I
2. B 6. F 10. J
3. C. 7. G 11. K
4. D 8. H 12. L
B. Make your own coordinate plane and
graph each point on it.

13. M (4, 7)
14. N ( -5, 1)
15. O ( -3, 4)
16. P (6, -2)
17. Q (5, 6)
18. R ( -4, -3)

V. Assignment

In a 1 whole sheet of paper of paper

graph the ordered pairs and state
whether they lie on a straight line.

1. (1, 7), (-2, 4), (-6, 0)

2. (5, 2), (-1, -1), ( -2, -5)
