Reflection

During my professional practice, I was a volunteer in providing support for the teachers and
students at St Dominic’s College. St Dominic’s College were undergoing their very first
musical at the school and needed support in making it a reality. The school asked Caroline
Chisholm to collaborate and for other volunteers to help support the students and teachers
in the production. What surprised me about this experience was the amount of time and
effort that was put into this production. Teachers had put in their time and effort outside of
school to make this musical a success since the end of last year. I also was surprised by the
number of students from St Dominic’s College who wanted to be a part of the musical, with
every week more and more students joining in.

After observation days, I was then assigned a role in conducting and teaching the singers
during rehearsal. I had some experience in conducting in previous professional practices,
which gave me confidence in preparing these students for their performance. I was then
moved on to the band where I supported them in playing the keyboard. I rehearsed with the
St Dominic’s students in small groups and as a whole with the Caroline Chisholm students.
My main goals were to ensure I gained positive relationships with the students and
teachers, and to be a good role model for the students during large rehearsals. By doing
this, I ensured I had a conversation with the student about their progress, their concerns, as
well as personal aspects. I found engaging with the students on a personal level allowed the
students to feel comfortable in asking for my help and be seen as a role model. I tried this
during smaller rehearsals and conducting, and some of the time in the large rehearsals. It
was quite hard to engage with the students on a deeper level through the large rehearsals
as there was minimal time.

As the musical ended, I believe that students and myself have learned how important it is to
be attentive in these situations. With teachers and helpers under amount of pressure, it was
important for the students and I to be cooperative and sensible when being instructed. I
also learnt that working as a team with the teachers, you must be notified about changes.
Being aware and actively listening to my mentor and other teachers was very important due
to the many changes implemented. Although a stressful time for the teachers, I was always
supported not only by my mentor but by the other teachers who volunteered to help. It
showed me that although there was a focus in supporting the students, that your colleagues
will also support you through the process. Overall, this experience has provided me the skills
and knowledge in the high expectations needed in conducting extra-curricular in school.
