1 a. Show that for finding the natural frequency of a spring-mass system, the mass of the spring
can be taken into account by adding one-third of its mass to the main mass. (06 Marks)
b. A section of a pipe pertaining to a certain machine vibrates with large amplitudes at a

compressor speed of220 rpm. For analyzing this system a spring-mass system is suspended
from the pipe to act as an absorber. A 1 kg absorber mass tuned to 220 cpm resulted in two
resonant frequencies of 188 cpm and 258 cmp. What must be the mass and spring stiffness
lo
