SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH VIII

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:


a. identify stress in word syllable,
b. enhance understanding about the three types of stress; and
c. read and write correct stress to the word syllables.

Read the following words with proper pronunciation.

Identify each word if it is noun, adjective or a verb.

After you identify those words, what are the difference?


3. Abstraction

STRESS

-it refers to the prominence given to a syllable or word which makes the word or syllable stand
out above the adjacent syllable or word
-it can be called word stress or sentence stress

TYPES OF STRESS

1. Primary Stress- the stress is on the first syllable of word either noun or adjective.

eg. present, export, table (noun)


slender, clever, happy (adjective)
2. Secondary Stress- the stress is on the second syllable of word
- it is commonly used in verbs
eg. export, decide, begin
3. Tertiary Stress- the stress is on the third syllable of words usually ends with –ic,-sion, and
-tion.
eg. graphic, geographic, geologic, television, revelation

4. Application

With your partner, study how the poem below should be read dramatically. Put stress
mark ( ‘ ) in each word.

didn’t mean at all.
