and the start-up or acceptance of the fire dampers system!

1. Safety Warnings

Fire dampers are a specially tested and certified product intended for ensuring fire safety in
buildings. Fire safety is ensured only if they are installed correctly and with due care as stated in
these instructions. Installation of the fire damper can only be performed by professionally
qualified personnel or organisations. Hidria accepts no responsibility in the event of incorrect
installation of the product.

During assembly and maintenance work on the dampers, the ventilation in ventilation ducts
must be turned off and the damper’s electric actuator must be turn off and secured!

All electrical connections to hazardous high voltage must be suitably insulated and implemented
safely in accordance with applicable legislation!

Instructions for electrical connection of PL-12 and PL-14

Fire dampers contain dangerous drive mechanisms that can trigger accidentally. Before
performing work on the dampers, it is necessary to acquaint oneself with the operation of the
dampers!

The triggering mechanisms on the fire dampers, which can injure people through their
operation, must be secured with an additional cover or must be at a suitable distance from
normal accessible levels so that they cannot be accessed without the use of additional ladders
or accessories!

Suitable protection during work at height must be ensured and the applicable local legislation
for safety at work must be complied with.

The use of suitable personal means of protection, such as safety goggles, protective gloves and
safety footwear, is required!

Dampers that have been installed and have not yet been handed over for operation or have yet
to be electrically connected to the central fire alarm system must always be left in the “CLOSED”
position.

It is prohibited to install and use PL-14 fire dampers in explosion hazardous areas or in
ventilation ducts in which an explosive medium is present.

Fire dampers with electric actuators can also be opened and closed manually, which makes it
easier to open and close the dampers during installation. To manually open the fire damper with
electric actuator, only the enclosed Allen key must be used. It is not allowed to open the fire
damper with electric actuator with a different key or with electric devices (e.g. a manual drilling
machine).

2. Basic operation of fire damper

The fire damper has two basic positions of the blade: OPENED - CLOSED.
In standby mode or during normal operation, the blade is open; in the event of being triggered, the
blade goes into the secure CLOSED position without additional external energy. During a fire, the
increased temperature activates a fire seal that seals the blade and the housing against the intrusion
of fire and hot smoke

3. Operation of dampers with the electric actuator:

The electric actuator enables remote triggering of the fire damper based on the principle of
quiescent current. During normal operation, the actuator is continuously undercurrent and holds the
damper blade in the OPENED position. The fire central triggers the damper by cutting the current,
and with the help of a pre-compressed spring in the actuator, the blade automatically, without
external energy, moves into the secure CLOSED position. For additional safety, there is a temperature
sensor with three thermal fuses (two in the duct, one for the surroundings) that permanently cut off
the voltage supply to the motor and thus close the blade when the temperature exceeds 72°C (a 95°C
version of duct thermal fuses is also available). Upon an accidental failure of electric supply, the
blade closes, and when the power supply is re-established, the blade once again opens automatically.
The fire damper can also be released accidentally due to increased temperature in ventilation ducts
or the surroundings or a defect in the thermal fuse. If the thermal fuse fails, it must be replaced with
a new original part. This procedure can be performed only by an authorised service centre.

ATTENTION: increased temperature can damage the electric actuator or can activate the fire seal – if
this happens, an inspection and a suitable servicing of the fire damper are required.

4. Electric power connection

Refers to models with electric actuator PL-12…/E…/…, PL-14…/E…/…

The electric actuators must be connected to the fire central in accordance with the power
connection plan for each individual building. The plan for connection must be in accordance
with the applicable local legislation! The implementation of the electrical connection is not
part of the order.

Attention; depending on the version of the actuator and the power supply, high voltage of
230 V AC is possible! Take into account national regulations when implementing the
insulation as well as protection against contact and touch with the voltage.

Supply voltage must be in accordance with the selected electric actuator! Complaints due to
connecting the wrong supply voltage are not possible!

For disconnecting from the 230 V AC network, a switch device is used that cuts off the phase
conductor of the supply (min. 3 mm open contact).
For 24 V voltage supply, the connection must be implemented through a safety isolating
transformer (SELV).

The basic connection diagram is shown for the CLOSED position of the damper when there is no
voltage on the motor and the indicator on the motor actuator is 0°. In the OPEN position of the
damper, the indicator shows 90° and the supply voltage is present. The closed position is detected at
5° and the open position at 80°.

Each motor has two internal microswitches that have potential free contacts and have 6 conductors
marked from S1 to S6. The switches indicate the damper position and control additional devices – the
buyer has to implement these themselves. In the closed position, namely when the indicator is at 0°,
the contacts S1-S2 and S4-S5 are closed, when the motor crosses 5°, S1-S3 and S4-S5 are closed and
when the motor crosses 80°, S1-S3 and S4-S6 are closed. Thus by appropriately connecting the
external control system, it is possible to obtain information about the damper’s position.

An example of the connection of the electric actuator and the internal microswitches to the indicator
lights:

The diagram is symbolic and shows the

electric actuator in the CLOSED position of
the damper. All external elements have to
be designed to the suitable voltage and
power and have to be implemented by the
buyer.
Different connections are also possible, for
example to fan execution relays or to digital
inputs of central control system controllers
and similar.

If the optional DO (junction box) version was delivered, the actuators’s cables are already connected
to the junction box.

External connection of the damper is carried

out via the junction box. Terminal markings
correspond to the markings of the actuator. The
cables to be used must be in the range of an
external insulation diameter of 4.5 to 10 mm.
Insofar as any cable entrance is not used, it
must be closed with a suitable insulation plug.

If you did not order the junction box DO

version, the cables have to be connected in
accordance with the applicable legislation on
electric safety!

For actuator type E19-(Belimo BLF-24-T-ST + BNK 230-24), check the characteristics of the fire system
where the fire damper will be installed. The E19 combination requires local power supply of each
damper with 230V AC and connection of the fire control exclusively to the intermediary modules of
the Belimo SBS (BKS24-9A or BKS24-1B) system. For additional information, contact our advisory
service.

Technical data on Belimo electric actuators can be found in our general catalogue or at the Belimo
website.
Parallel connection of several actuators is possible, pay attention to the data on the required power.

5. Testing the operation of fire dampers

Models with electric actuator PL-12../E../ and.. PL-14../E../.. In the fire alarm centre or the central
control system, you can determine whether the CLOSED and OPEN position signal is present by test
triggering the damper, namely by opening and closing, through indicator lights or any other system
(SBS, central control system and similar).
