WHAT IS HATCH?
HATCH is a design collaborative which has formed out of a design class at Towson University. The group
consists of one graduate student and four undergrads, Brianna Poalillo, Kelsey Hampton, Catherine Phung,
Greg Lamberson, and Drew Bassin, respectively.
How?
Simple- stenciling birds. By integrating a variety of skills from laser cutting stencils and business cards [also a small bird
stencil] to using social media and social networking to spread the word.
Phase one and two have been local to Towson and Baltimore. One installation which ran for three and a half hours and
spanned 150 yards, attracted dozens of people who participated in the stenciling of birds on the walkways of Towson
University, engaging them in social interaction- brighting our day as well as theirs.
The second installation of phase two was done in the heart of Baltimore on an exterior wall of Skylofts Gallery. This in-
stallation was created in a specific manor- creating a piece of art as well as a marketing device for HATCH.
What is to come?
Phase three is to take the project national and international. With the aid of a newly received grant, we will be sending
packets of stencils to contacts we have throughout the US, Europe, Australia, and Africa. Recent speaker, design and
education activist, Emily Pilloton [of Project H and Studio H] has committed to bringing the project to her students and
the Bertie, NC community. Kits of stencils will be mailed out so that ‘flocks’ can hatch in cities around the world, encour-
aging individual communities to foster interaction and explore their creativity.
