The sum ofthe Flakiness and Elongation Index (F.I. & E. I.) ofthe coarse aggregate must
be kept below the limit of25% at all times when using the BS812 methodology.
The Contractor shall store the coarse aggregate in stockpiles that have free draining bases
and they shal1 be stored and handled so that it is not contaminated by foreign matter and
dust. Aggregate stockpiles of each size shal1 be kept separately so that contamination from
one stockpile to another cannot occur. Segregation in each stockpile shal1 be prevented.
The coarse aggregate shal1 be handled as little as possible to avoid unnecessary breakage
and segregation.

6.2.5.4. Production of Aggregate

The Contractor shall submit details of the sources of aggregates he proposes to use for the
Works. If the aggregates are to be obtained from sources not previously tested and
approved , the Contractor shall submit representative 30kg samples of fine aggregate and of
each size of coarse aggregate proposed for use in the Works , for testing at least two (2)
months before the materials are required for use or delivery.
Before excavating materials for the production of concrete aggregates , the Contractor shall
clear trees, roots , brush, sods, clay, unsuitable sand and gravel, weathered and unsound
rock and other objectionable matter from all of those portions of the surface deposits from
which aggregates are to be produced. Materials, including stripping, removed from the
deposits and not used in carrying out the Works shall be disposed of as specified or as
directed by the Engineer.
Processing of the raw materials includes crushing, screening, milling and blending, to
produce fme and coarse aggregates meeting the requirements of Clauses 6.2 .4.1, 6 .2.4 .2
and 6.2 .4 .3 , shall be done at a site and in a manner approved by the Engineer. Washing
aggregate for RCC is not required unless it is contaminated by clay and materials fmer
than O.002mm size. Ifwashing is required it will be at the Contractor ’ s expense. For CVC
fine aggregate the quantity of fmes will require reduction by washing part or all of the fine
aggregate required for CVC as provided by the RCC aggregate processing pl뻐t. Water for
washing aggregate shall be free from objectionable quantities of suspended material,
