History of Water Filters
The history of water filters can be traced to the earliest
civilizations with written records. Water filters have
been used throughout history to improve the safety and
aesthetics of water intended to be used for drinking or
bathing. In modern times, they are also widely used in
industry and commerce. The history of water filtration
is closely linked with the broader history of
improvements in public health.

Water filtration
is a general term that refers to any system or process
that is used to filter out particles and pollutants from
water. It doesn't necessarily need to be a purifier to
make the cut. Anything that removes any amount of
particles, sediment, bacteria and removes the chlorine
taste, can be called water filtration. If it has a filter of
any type, it's a filtration system.

A water filter removes impurities

by lowering contamination
of water using a fine physical barrier, a
chemical process, or a biological process.
Filters cleanse water to different extents for
purposes such as providing
agricultural irrigation , accessible drinking
water, public and private aquariums, and
the safe use of ponds and swimming pools.

Observation
Water is refreshing, hydrating, and invaluable to your survival. But clean water remains a
precious and often scarce commodity – there are nearly 800 million people who still don’t
have regular access to it. Why is that? Is it because of lack of knowledge on how to get safe
or clean water, over population so the water supply is dropping, Poverty and inequality,
Climate Change for long periods of drought. Diarrheal disease from unsafe water is one of
the leading causes of death around the world for children under five. And according to the
U.N. report from 2010 microbial water-borne illness killed more people per year than war.
Many people have used unsafe water for their cooking, drinking, bathing and for everyday
use. Some indigenous people who are living at the nearby rivers or lakes in other country
are getting sick from drinking unsafe water from those water source.

Question
Based on our past knowledge many people live in nearby river or lake depends on
that certain water source. We are trying to make this experiment and to build this
cheap filter that can be affordable by anyone. How can a water filter make a dirty
water clean enough to be used in our daily life?

Material we used:

Material Costs Availability

Bottles or Plastic Php. 0 Recycled water bottles and plastic
Containers containers can be used and be seen
anywhere

Sand, Rocks, Pebbles, Php. 50 Widely available

Quartz Sand, Granite,
Porcelain Sand,

Charcoal Php. 10 Available everywhere just need wood to
burn

Cotton Php. 10 Can be buy on many stores, Easy to get

Cloth Php. 0 Widely available

Procedure:
First: We will collect dirty water and get a clean water. We will get the dirty water from a
river or pond and we will use the potable water as a comparison of the cleanliness.

Second: we will buy the materials we needed to make the filter. Like the container/bottles,
and the layered materials that acts like a agent to filter the dirty water.

Third: Assemble the necessary materials so the process of purification will be at the
optimum

Fourth: Pour the dirty water through the filter and check if the water is actually getting
filtered correctly. We will do this by comparing it to the potable water. We will commence
several trials on the filter and it will be compared to potable water.

Data Table:

Water Cleanliness (1-10)
Tap water (as a comparison) 10
River water 1
After the first Test on the filter 8
After the Second Test on the filter 8.50
After the Third Test on the filter 8.75
After the Fourth Test on the filter 9
After the Fifth Test on the filter 9.25

Results
As the tap water as our comparison of cleanliness, The water sample from the river goes
through the water filter:

 Test I: Filters cleanse the water about 80%

 Test II: Filters cleanse the water about 85%
 Test III: Filters cleanse the water about 87%
 Test IV: Filters cleanse the water about 90%
 Test V: Filters cleanse the water about 93%

Through a several test on our filtration device, we saw a progress that if the water has been
filtered many times the water is becoming cleaner and clearer. As we compare to the tap
water although its not as much as clear in comparison. still we know that the our water
filter progress is a success for us cause we observe that many particles, sediments, dirt has
been removed from the water sample.
