Subject code: CR201 Subject Name: Unit Operations in Ceramic Processing Dept. Code: CR
No. of pages: 01 Full Marks: 60 Duration: 2 Hours

Answer all questions. Figures at the right-hand margin indicate marks.

All parts of a question should be answered in one place.

Sl. Question
No.
1 𝑃 𝑑(𝐷𝑠) 6
Generalized equation for crushing is given by d(𝑚̇) = -K (𝐷𝑠) . derive Rittinger’s, Kick’s and
Bond’s crushing law taking n = 2,1 and 1.5 respectively. Notations have their usual
significance.
Give justifications in favor of a low crushing efficiency exhibited by Jaw-crusher. 4

2 A jaw-crusher is run by an electrical motor (500 hp) which has 60% mechanical efficiency. 6
The crusher is producing 40 kg per hour. Determine the crushing efficiency of the jaw-
crusher. The crushed material has the specific surface area of 0.25 J-m-2. Assume that the
change in surface area per kg = 1000 m2. 1 hp = 746 Watt.
4
Differentiate ‘blake jaw-crusher’ to ‘dodge jaw-crusher’ based on construction, and output.
3 With a neat schematic derive the expression for maximum crushable particle size which is 6
related to the ‘angle of nip’ in a double roll-crusher.
A double roll-crusher is having a set of crushing rolls of 100 cm diameter and 65 cm width 4
face with 1.4 cm clearance between the crushing surface. fid out the maximum permissible
feed size to the crusher if the angle of the nip is 32o.
4 Show that the critical angular frequency of ball mill which has the diameter,‘d’ could be 6
approximated by ƞc = 0.35355*d(-1/2).
Name and explain briefly the principle of mechanisms involved in grinding inside ball-mill. 4

5 Power require to crush 100 tonnes per hour of limestone is 123 kW. If 80% of the feed pass 6
through a 20 mm screen and 80% of the product pass through 1 mm screnn, find out the
work index for limestone.
State two advantages and two disadvantages of ‘wet milling’. 4
6 Define the term i) sphericity and ii) surface-volume mean diameter. 4
Calculate the sphericity of a perfect cube and the sphericity of a short cylinder (diameter = 6
height).
