Information on Use of Choice Board and ISTE Standards Addressed

This choice board will be used as a culminating activity to conclude a unit on The
Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It will be used as an alternate form of assessment in
lieu of a chapter test or final project activity. Offering the board will give students
a choice in how to demonstrate their learning. The board also offers multiple
opportunities for the student to incorporate technology into their learning. The
following ISTE Standards for Students are addressed upon completion of this
choice board:

1. Empowered Learner: As a student, I leverage technology to take an active role


in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in learning goals.

1c: I use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves my


practice and to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways.

3. Knowledge Constructor: As a student, I critically curate a variety of resources


using digital tools in order to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts, and
make meaningful learning experiences for myself and others.

3a: I plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information


and other resources for my intellectual or creative pursuits.

6. Creative Communicator: As a student, I communicate clearly and express


myself creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles,
formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

6a: I choose appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired
objectives of their creation or communication.
Instructions for completing Tom Sawyer Choice Board

Activity 1: Design a travel brochure of Hannibal.


• Include 3 photos, pictures, or illustrations to decorate your brochure
• Include 3 reasons to visit Hannibal
• List 3 fun activities to do in Hannibal
• Give a one-paragraph description of the history of Hannibal

Activity 2: Make a map of the cave Tom & Becky visited


• Include a compass rose and scale (Ex: 1 inch = 1 mile).
• Label and illustrate at least 5 areas or landmarks inside the cave.
• Use details from the book to help you define areas and landmarks.
• May be hand-drawn or computer-generated

Activity 3: Make a “Wanted” poster for Injun Joe


• Include a composite sketch of Injun Joe
• Write a brief description of him
• Make a list of his crimes
• List reward offered for his capture
• May be hand-drawn or computer-generated

Activity 4: Make a timeline of music during the decades of 1810-1860.


• Include all 6 decades 1810, 1820, etc., on your timeline
• Show 2 events per decade
• Include 1 picture, drawing, or illustration to accompany each decade

Activity 5: Record a book review of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer


• Go to www.flipgrid.com
• Enter the flip code
• Record a video of yourself answering the questions listed on the prompt
• Scoring as follows:
1. Who was your favorite character? Why did you choose this character?
2. What was your favorite part of the book? Why?
3. Would you recommend this book? Why or why not?
Activity 6: Use Quizlet to make a vocabulary review set from our novel
• Go to www.quizlet.com
• Use your journal to choose 20 terms and definitions
• Make cards to form a set that we can use in class

Activity 7: Use Kahoot! to make a trivia challenge


• Go to www.kahoot.com
• Make a list of 20 trivia questions from the novel
• Enter the questions into a Kahoot! challenge

Activity 8: Research 3 famous pirates


• Go to www.google.com to research three different pirates
• From your research, write a biographical paragraph about each pirate
• Scoring will be based on the following:
1. Name of pirate
2. Year of birth and death
3. Physical description of pirate
4. Area in which they sailed
5. Number of ships and crew members
6. Pirate’s claim to fame (What are they famous for?)

Activity 9: Research the 3 home remedies listed below


• Go to www.google.com to find information on home remedies from the 1800’s
• Research should include remedies for baldness, headaches, and bad breath.
• Write a descriptive paragraph for each remedy.
• To receive full credit, all 3 conditions and remedies must be discussed.
