Irrigate-IQ Solution: Node Program Tool - User Guide

A new procedure has been released to allow a service technician to program an Irrigate-IQ™ Valve
Control Module, also referred to as a node. The tool allows technicians to program a valve control
module during installation, change the serial number of the module after installation, and read the
serial number of the module.

Capabilities
The Node Program Tool has the following functionality:
● Program the serial number of the Valve Control Module during initial installation
● Change the serial number after installation if necessary
● Test the function of a Valve Control Module and it’s solenoid
● Read the serial number of a Valve Control Module

Theory of Operation
In order to complete an installation you must program each Valve Control Module with a serial number. The
serial number of the Valve Control Module is used in conjunction with the nozzle package to determine the
location of each module on the pivot.
In general it is recommended to program the first Valve Control Module, mounted on the first outlet on the pivot
with serial number ‘1,000,001’. The second Valve Control Module would then be programmed with serial
number ‘1,000,002’ and so on until you reach the last module on the pivot.
For example, if there are 146 outlets and Valve Control Modules on the pivot then the last module would be
programmed with serial number 1,000,146.
When programming modules the available range of serial numbers starts at 1,000,001 and ends at 16,000,000.

Uniform Corner
When installing a Uniform Corner system it is recommended to start the node serial numbers at the same number
as the outlet on the pivot. For example, if the first outlet on the corner arm is number 133, then the first valve
module installed should be programmed as number 1,000,133.
Numbering the nodes this way will allow for simple future expansion if the user decides to install a complete VRI
system on the pivot at a later date.

Tools Required
To utilize the Node Program Tool, the following components are required:
● Trimble PN 102620-05 (IQL-200)
○ Minimum supported firmware version: 5210
● Trimble PN 112831 (CABLE ASSY, Irrigate-IQ, Node Programming and Span Cable diagnostics)
● Valve Control Module program tool
● Windows laptop or PC
● USB-Serial adapter (if required)

Installation Instructions
To install the Node Program Tool, complete the following steps.
1. Download the installation folder
○ The installation files can be requested from Trimble.
2. Ensure all files are uncompressed in a single folder, so they appear as in the image below:

Operating Instructions - Programming a New Node
Follow the instructions below to operate the Nozzle Test Tool.
1. Connect the laptop to the IQL-200 using the node programming cable (PN 112831) and the USB-Serial
adapter (if needed). See the block diagram below:

2. Open the Node Program Tool application.

3. Select the correct COM port, then click ‘Open’

4. The laptop is now connected to the IQL-200 and is ready to begin programming nodes

5. To program a Valve Control Module using the Node Program Tool, complete the following steps:
a. In the ‘Set’ window, enter the number of the first Valve Control Module on the pivot.
■ Note: This step must be completed before nodes can be programmed.
■ For example, if the first module is number 1, then set the ‘Set’ value to 1000001.
■ If this is a Uniform Corner install, then the ‘Set’ value will be set to the first outlet number
on the corner arm, which could be 100000133 for example.
■ Note: The Log window below the control functions shows a detailed log of all steps that
have been carried out so far.

b. Click the ‘Program’ button to program a node with the number indicated in the ‘Next Node ID’
window.
■ During the programming process the Solenoid will be activated to act as a test of the unit,
also,
■ The ‘Next Node ID’ will automatically increment 1 number, so it is ready to program the
next node.
■ The node has now been successfully programmed
■ Note: The log window will show details of this process.

7. Use the ‘Test’ button to activate the solenoid on a connected node.
a. To check that the solenoid is activating, insert a plunger and depress it. If the solenoid is
functioning correctly the plunger will be held in by the solenoid.

8. If you need to return a node to its factory state, click the ‘Factory’ button.
a. Doing this will return the node serial number to ‘999999999’
