Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Characteristics of Shapes

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.G.1 Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses,
rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides) (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize
rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that
do not belong to any of these subcategories.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3 - Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☒ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://PollEv.com/surveys/eFh6Vcq5dAT9w04jKMo09/respond

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Using the student response tool will help with how students engage with and express themselves within the
lesson. Students will have the ability to respond to the questions anonymously. This empowers students to
not be afraid to make mistakes. It also gives every student the opportunity to engage and express themselves
in the lesson.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Prior to the instructional activity the teacher will introduce the topic and gauge the student’s knowledge on
geometric figures and their characteristics. The teacher what a characteristic is and how it can be used to
identify shapes. Teacher will throw up a square on the board and ask the students the characteristics of the
shape.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☒ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: As the lesson begins the students will have
their devices ready with the Poll Everywhere website pulled up and logged in. The teacher will begin to
discuss the characteristics of a few shapes using a PowerPoint presentation.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☒ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☒ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

(Triangle) What shape is this? (Multiple Choice)

What are the characteristics of this shape? (Open ended responses)
(Rhombus) What shape is this? (Multiple Choice)
What are the characteristics of this shape?
Can a shape be classified into more than one shape group? (Yes or No)
Explain how a shape can be classified into more than one shape group. (Open ended)
Select all the shapes that are trapezoids. (Multiple Select)
Select all the shapes that are not rectangles. (Multiple Select)

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? Some of the questions may have more than one correct answer but there will always be one
best answer.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? After the SRT activity students will break out into
groups and do a shape cut out. The students will then classify the shapes into the different groups by the
characteristics of the shapes.

How will the data be used? The data will be used as a formative assessment to see how well the students
understood the content. If the students were able to apply what they learned into the post activity, then the
teacher can move on. However, if the teacher sees some need to readdress the topic they can plan to do so.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. My goal for this activity is to have 100% student
participation on each question.

Reflective Practice: Reflecting on this practice, I think that giving all students the ability to respond would
impact learning greatly. We learn from our mistakes. By creating an environment where a student can feel safe
they will feel less pressure when they are unsure of themselves or the answer.
