Title:
AUTOMATED IRRIGATION SYSTEM WITH GSM MODULE

Research Agenda Covered:

 Overview of the student
 Related Studies
 Statement of the problem
 Scope of the project
 Initial Design
 Estimated Costs

Overview of the Proposal:

Water is major source of energy for all the living things whether it is
a plant or animal. In this modern world, there are a number of villages,
where farmers depend on the rains and borewells for the irrigation of land
and still an issue for the farmers having a water pump. To minimize the
labor effort, wasting of water and monitoring overhead, it is necessary to
design an automated irrigation system to resolve such problems. An
automated plant and crop irrigation system using various components like
the microcontroller, GSM module and sensor. This automated irrigation
system is proposed to schedule water delivery to the crops.

Related Studies:
Automated irrigation system for farmers is a scientific process of
artificially supplying water to the land or soil that is being cultivated.
Traditionally in dry regions having no or little rainfall water had to be
supplied to the fields either through canals or hand pumps, tube wells.
Conventional irrigation methods had severe problems such as increase in
workload of farm labor and often it lead to problem such as over-irrigation
or under-irrigation, and leaching of soil. India is the country of agriculture.
Agricultural sector is very very important as far as Indian villager’s point of
view. Productivity of agriculture field’s does not depend on excess of water
sprinkled to the field, but depends on better matching of water supply
with crop demand and uniform environmental conditions that are suitable
for farming.

Statement of the Problem:

This research attempts to find evidences to the AUTOMATED
IRRIGATION SYSTEM WITH GSM MODULE. More specifically it seeks
to find the answers to the following questions:

 How will the farmers know if the soil is dry?

 How to avoid water loss on the plantation?
 How much water will consume to the soil?

Scope of the Project

The project focused solely in constructing a water
irrigation system with a device that will determine the moisture
condition of the soil and will trigger the water irrigation system
to operate. The drip hose will automatically release adequate
amount of water if the moisture sensor detects that the soil is
already dry and lacks water. The project can automatically
determine if the soil-moisture is below the minimum allowable
limit, ensures plants are not affected by moisture stress at
critical growing times, decreases human intervention.

Proposal Objectives:
 Develop a program using a microcontroller that will process the
data from the sensor and control the whole irrigation system.
 Identify the suitable amount of water to be delivered that will
assist in maintaining the level of soil moisture monitor the level
of water tank which stores the water that will aid in the
irrigation system
 Test the effect of varying moisture content of the soil to the
plants with the following indications, at lower than optimized
level, at optimized level, and at higher than optimized level.

Benefits of the Project:

The benefits of this project are:
- Saves you water and time. Both sprinkler and drip irrigation
systems can be set to daily or weekly watering, as well as
timed for specific hours during day or night.
- Reduces weed growth.
- Improves plant growth.
- Preserves soil nutrients.
