ABSTRACT

This study is conducted to determine the different factors that can affect the academic

performance in English of Grade 10 students in Luis Aguado National High School South

Summit Ridge Extension. The respondent for this study are Grade 10 Students. The

survey is conducted by using questionnairesfor information gathering about different

factors by category relating to academic performance of the students.

1. Are there any significant differences between the grades of the students in English in

1st, 2nd, and 3rd grading period?

2. Are there any significant relationships between the grades of the grade 10 students in

English in 1st and 3rd grading?

For statistical treatment, OnewayAnova and Pearson Product were used to determine

thefactors that affect the academic performances of grade 10 students in English in

LuisAguado National High School South Summit Ridge- Extension. The significant

relationship and significant differences in 1st to 3rd grading were used to find out if there

are differences or relationship on it.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

English is defined as the international language, but merely classified as a primary

dialectical language of some countries. Hence, it is widely spoken around the world. It

connotes branches and sub-branches of words, phrases and sentences to provide clear and

understandable thoughts. It contains basic structure like IPA(International Phonetic

Alphabet) and also contains rules like of SVA (subject verb agreement) basically as a

medium to a clear path and understanding. It is used definitely in communication. The

strategic method of linguistic English as a form of inter-connecting with people and other

things is essential and needed. Here it is being used as second language macro skills

internationally by the form of reading, writing, listening and speaking. These skills are

commonly connected to the whole agenda of linguistic and verbal English used as the

most powerful way of communicating. And this is by people’s way of communicating.

People's way of communicating is through the way of speaking (verbal) and we

all know that through the use of our voices. We can express what we have in our mind

and those things that we want to deliver to someone or to a specific individual or more of

group of people in a society. The problem is that there are so many languages around the

world and it makes people deal to a hard time of study, because of the languages they are

into. English is said to be the language of Science, Mathematics, and etc. The study was

co-relational and it worked from a target variant of a synthetic perspective in that it

looked at the way in which many aspects of language are interrelated to make the whole

language system.
But this affects the problem in the usage of English on workplaces and

workforces. Is it really a privilege to someone specifically to know the struggle of

speaking and using English as a first language or an edge to second language from others

who have studied their own mother-tongues during childhood?Knowing English

increases your edge on workplaces and gives great opportunity of getting a good job. It

supports the mechanism of people’s way of communication and boosts their expectation

in the reality cliché of idea.

English is a major subject that every student needs to know and to learn

performance of grade 10 students in English affected by psychological, economic, social,

get criticize by the public and personal actions. Through these factors strongly and highly

influence the performance of students, but students can enhance their self through

learning more about academic preferences especially in English and to remove the factors

affecting their academic performance in English.

English is related in many aspects of our life. It can be used in so many different ways.

For example, its use as mother tongues to foreign places. It’s essence in the life of

students in every English-related subject. It’s quintessence in workforces and workplaces.

And lastly,it is important to know how hard communicating with different people having

different languages and dialects used in daily lives. But these are not only those in

relation to how magnificent English in our lives. Many factors can still affect and impact

this topic of study. And it will be focused on the latter part.

Moreover these subjects are necessary for the students to study but what factors

commonly affect the academic performances of grade 10 students in Luis

AguadoNationalHigh School South Summit Ridge Extension. Doesparent’s educational

background matters? Or will it be from other significant factors that might help this

study seemingly understandable? Those are the things that the researchers will tackle in

this research.

Parent’s education is also a factor to a good path of their children’s academic

performances. If parents are smart there is a positive chance that a child or a student

would also have a smart mind and high caliber thinking. Mostly, it’s from the heredity

and bloodline. Personal traits are also a factor of this study. It may be a point of view that

a student or a person will encounter different academic obstacles and academic

hindrances in school along with problematizing academic situations. And by these,

students will have the chance to choose what’s need to be done on the right track and

what needs to be neglected. Student’s personal traits affect the value of education

because it merely ignores the consistency of seriousness and focus of students in the

pursuit of difficult academic cultivation of linguistic language study. If student’s personal

trait acquires optimism and determination with goals and clear path then a good academic

result will be given right away.

Family’s income may also affect this study. Why? because it connotes and give students

the feeling of despair and loneliness. Imagine a child or a student going to school not

having a good morning due to lack of eat like breakfast, how about lack of care from

parents, lack of school supplies, projects, paper works, assignment and etc. would never

have an energy in dealing with hectic whole day of hard time academic schedules.Of

course the student would possibly have a negative school day.

Facility is also factor that can affect the academic of a student. In instance, Luis Aguado

National High SchoolSouth Ridge Extension, the number of students in one class is not

appropriate because of that the teachers cannot pay attention to all of the students because

the area is crowded sometimes the teachers want to be more creative in teaching but

because of the number of students they limits their strategies.

A student will not have a good mind to think, to solve problems or even to think

for the right answer in every problem given by their teacher. Even in English, it is highly

anticipated that children at LuisAguado National High School South Summit Ridge

Extension having English as second language have a hard time in thinking for the proper

rule of English and also on how to deal with perfect and grammatically correct path.

Teachers is also a factor that can affect the academic performance of the students.

Teachers nowadays are very straightforward and professional. They will make sure that

their students can get something from them. They will make sure that each and every

student from their class can understand what they are talking about in front of their class.

These are some of the factor that affects students from Luis Aguado National High

School South Summit Ridge Extension on their academic performances in the pursuit of

the proper usage of English as a major language in school. There may be more significant

factors that might affect this study and these factors might really affect the student on

their academic performances. This study will welcome you to a new understanding of

modern study of English language and this will be the one researchers will discuss on this

study later on.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

It is just necessary for some students to encounter different verbal interactions, some of

them can communicate with ease while on the other hand could not. It is perhaps, one of

the major the problems for the students why they were not able to communicate properly

is because from lack of learning experiences. In this study the main purpose is to

determine the factors that can affect the academic performance of Grade 10 student in

English in Luis Aguado National High School South Summit Ridge-Extension

*To determine that the given factors are truly affect the academic performances of Grade

10 students in English

* To evaluate what will be the result of this study.

HYPOTHESIS

1. There is no significant difference between the grades of the students in English in 1st,

2nd, and 3rd grading period.

2.There is no significant relationship between the grades of the grade 10 students in

English in 1st and 3rd grading

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The current study intends to give insights and expose ideas that will merit the following.

STUDENTS

This will be a great help to students who did notknow why their academic performance in

English is not good or they did not perform well in academics. The students can enhance

their performance if they know what factor affect their performance in English.

PARENTS

This study may help the parents to widen their way of giving support to their children and

giving them the time to enhance their performance in English. It can open up the mind of

parents to guide their children when they are studying

FACULTY

The result of this study may help the faculty to know and the determine the factors that

affects the student's academic performance in English.

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION

This study may help the school administration to have an idea about the factors that can

affect the student’s academic performance in English.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS

This study may help the future researchers to get an idea in conducting a research paper

and information in conducting a research and will also serve as source of knowledge.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

In 173 Grade 10 Students (S.Y 2018-2019) from two sections. One hundred forty-one

(141) students were use in these study Seventy (70) students from Grade 10 Inocencio

(S.Y 2018-2019) and the remaining Seventy- one (71) students are from Grade 10

Gregorio (S.Y 2018-2019).

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study limits its coverage on the Grade 10 Students from two sections (2018-2019)

and delimits on the students who are not on the same year this research paper was made

to study the factors can affect the academic performance of Grade 10 student in Luis

Aguado National High school South Summit Ridge Extension.

But the grades of some respondents are not available. There are situation that some

respondent has no grade on the first or third grading. That’s why the researchers decided

to put 75 on it, because it is the passing grading.

RELATED LITERATURE

The Review of Related Literature states a comprehensive summary of previous research

or studies on a topic. The literature review surveys scholarly article, books and other

sources relevant to a particular area of research. The review should enumerate, describe,

summarize, objectively evaluate and clarify this previous research. It should give a

theoretical base for the research and help you (the author) determine the nature of your

research. The literature review acknowledges the work of previous researchers, and in so

doing, assures the reader that your work has been well conceived. It is assumed that by

mentioning a previous work in the field of study works into the work at hand.

A literature review creates a “landscape” for the reader, giving her or him a full

understanding of the developments in the field. This landscape informs the reader that the

author has indeed assimilated all (or the vast majority of) previous, significant works in

the field into her or his research.

Factors influencing performance of English language in public secondary schools in

Bomet District, Kenya

According to the author John Njuguna, English Language plays a central and

strategic role in the school system because almost all the school subjects are taught using

English language. However, student’s achievement in this subject in secondary school is

not encouraging. Therefore, the purpose of the study will be to investigate the factors

influencing performance of English language in public secondary in Bomet district in

Kenya. Chapter one of the proposals gives a background to the study which shows that

though tremendous research has been done on factors influencing language studies, the

influence of these factors in rural Kenya is still unknown. The statement of the problem

that justified the study is that for a long time, local examination averages in English have

always consistently fallen below the national averages and therefore there is a need to

discover the reasons behind this worrying trend. The research objectives are to assess the

influence of teacher qualifications on performance in English, to determine the extent to

which the availability of teaching and learning materials affects performance in English,

to investigate the extent to which school factors affect performance in English and to

investigate the extent to which home factors influence performance in English in public

secondary schools in Bomet schools. Chapter two reviewed the empirical literature

related to factors that influence students' achievement in English and it was organized

according to the research objectives that addressed: teacher quality, teaching and learning

resources, school factors, home’s background respectively. The study was guided by the

Communicative Language Theory which explains the processes and goals in language.
Factors Affecting Students’ Performance in English Language in Zanzibar Rural

and Urban Secondary Schools

According to Mary Atanas Mosha, This study investigated the factors affecting students’

performance in English language subject in Zanzibar Secondary Schools. Bloom’s (1982)

model of evaluation was used as a framework in the study. The study employed

qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected using interviews, classroom

observation, questionnaire and documentary review. Result of the study reveals that

students were highly motivated to learn English for future expectations such as local and

international communication, academic advancement and employment prospects.

However, students’ performance was affected by shortage of English teachers and

absence of teaching and learning materials. The findings shows that presence of

untrained, under-qualified, and trained teachers in schools who were incompetent as a

result they skipping to teach some difficult topics in the syllabus. Study findings also

indicated that students’ infrequent use of English language at school and home, large

class size, teachers’ responsibilities, poor conducive teaching and learning environment

in the classrooms, limited home support environment and poverty were contributing

factors for English poor. Based on this study results, study recommends in-service

teachers training to enhance teachers English teaching skills, equal distribution of English

teachers, adequate teaching facilities, and conducive learning environment at the schools.
Factors Causes Students Low English Language Learning: A Case Study in the

National University of Laos

It was stated by ThongmaSouriyavongsa, Sam Rany, andMohamadJafreZainolAbidin,

Leong Lai Mei, It has been generally well-known that most people faced some problems

in learning English as a second or foreign language in non-English speaking countries;

for example, in Lao People Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). This paper has a main

purpose to explore students-teachers’ weakness towards English language learning as a

foreign language of a Continuing Summer Program for Bachelor’s degree of Teacher

Education in English at the Faculty of Education (FOE), the National University of Laos

(NUOL) in Lao. A study focuses on the reasons that impact on their poor English

performance. Data were drawn from the question “Why Lao students weak in English?”.

This question was administered to 30 English students-teachers in order to respond with

their own views. Each respondent listed ten reasons that mentioned why students are poor

in English language performance. Based on the findings of this research, main causes

have been included namely: first, the majority of students stated that the English teachers

are not well-trained; for instance, they use Lao language when teaching, so they cannot

perform well to attract the interest of the student. Secondly, students lack of English

foundation background. Third, students lack of confidence to use English because they

are afraid of mistakes and shy feeling. Fourth, the curriculum is inappropriate for helping

students to improve their English proficiency. Last but not least, English language is

difficult to learn due to students are not well-motivated, encouraged and gained learning

strategy. Furthermore, students do not practice speaking English with English native
speakers, and class environment is crowded and noisy that is not fulfilled with teaching

pedagogy

English Language and its Education in Cambodia

Koji Igawa conducted this study to investigate the present situation of the English

language and its education in Cambodia. The first half of the study consists of a review of

current literature researching the present situation of Cambodia in transition, changes in

the status of foreign languages, and the condition of English and its education in

Cambodia. The second half of this study reports on the results of a small-scale survey

recently undertaken in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The survey asked Cambodian teachers of

English about their professional development (PD) needs and their responses were

compared with those of Japanese and Korean teachers of English. Cambodian teachers

preferred PD areas include Teaching Skills & Methods, Understanding Students,

Attending Conferences, Seminars & Workshops, and Communication Skills. Not so

many teachers were interested in Language Improvement, which is popular among

Japanese and Korean teachers. These aspects are discussed by referring to qualitative data

including e-mail messages and interviews

While reading and understanding the following country that struggles related to the

factors that affect the academic peformances in English. The researcher’s conclude that

the following country that said had struggles in communicating, assessment,

facilities, learning and other factors that said it only prove that in different countries that

is given have the strong relation

The academic performances in English in Bomet District,Kenya, urban and rural of

Zanzibar, Laos and Cambodia is very essential for the rest of the country that lack in

English Academic. This is the key to understand foreign and also some local, it help and

support the fundation of getting job and basic education but it was the problem of the

given countries. These countries noticed by the researchers have their own primary

language meaning the English language and Academic are secondary they did’nt give

that much attention and improvements

METHODOLOGY

METHODS AND MATERIALS

This chapter contains research methods, respondents, source of data, research

instruments, and data gathering procedure used in getting information needed. It is made

to maintain the synchronized process of interviewing or gathering information that can

strongly support the stand of this study.

RESEARCH METHOD

Quantitative research was the tradition of inquiry used by the researchers for this study.

Quantitative research was used to analyze data deductively, from general to specific. This

is inclined to the nature of the study which aims to determine the factors affecting the

academic performances of grade 10 students in English subject S.Y 2018-2019. By

getting the data from a number of respondents, the researchers will arrive on a conclusion

by analyzing it.
RESPONDENTS

In this research the researchers chose the students of Luis Aguado National High School

South Summit Ridge Extension. The researchers randomly select One hundred-

twenty(120) respondents out of One hundred- seventy three (173) grade 10 students.

They were asked to answer the questionnaires made up of fifteen (15) close questions that

are very connected on our topic, which of the Factors Affect the Academic Performances

of grade 10 students.

SOURCES OF DATA

The main source of data was the document that contains the grades of the respondents in

their English subject from first to third grading period. The respondents were selected

using random picking where in each of the students has a probability of One(1) out of

Seventy (70) Grade 10 (S.Y 2018-2019) students where in section of Inocencio and One

(1) out of Seventy- One (71) Grade Ten (10) (2018-2019) students from section of

Gregorio. The grades of the chosen students in their English subjects were used to

determine their performances. The researchers also conducted a survey to know the

factors affecting the performances in their academic performances in English subject.

TRADITION OFINQUIRY AND RESEARCHINSTRUMENT

The researchers used survey method as their Tradition of Inquiry. This is because using

survey method will maximize the data gathered from the respondents while maintaining

the quantitative approach. Survey questionnaires are used as the research instrument for

gathering data. Using exam questionnaires ensures that the data gathered will be within

the reach of each respondent while not taking too much time for answering it for their

convenience. Each questionnaire consists of Fifteen (15) closed questions that want to

know objectively the data for the study.

For the validation of the question guide, the researchers presented it to the advisers in

charge for comments, recommendations, criticism to strengthen the legitimacy of the

interview guide.

The researchers conduct their interview around Luis Aguado National High School South

Summit Ridge Extension.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

For the purpose of this research, in-depth interviews were used. The respondents are

genuinely about their views, opinions, and facts regarding the Factors Affecting the

Academic Performances of grade 10 in English subject. Some of the personal information

is being asked for research purposes and will remain confidential between the

interviewee.

Right after the interviewed questions are answered and collected, the data gathered and

collected are being analyzed and presented to the realization and competition of the

purpose of the research study.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT

The following are the different statistical tools used to present the data. To measure and

find the factors of Grade 10 students in English:

Mean (𝑥̅ ):

Where:

𝑥 = mean

fx= scores deviation

∑fx= summation of scores

∑𝑓𝑥
𝑥̅ = 𝑁

Standard Deviation

SD = √∑𝑓𝑥(𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )²/n – 1)

Where:

N= total frequency

SD=standard deviation
To find if there is any significant relationship of the factors in the Academic

Performances of the Grade 10 students in English Pearson product was used. The

formula was given below:

[𝑁(∑ 𝑥𝑦)] − [(∑ 𝑥)(∑ 𝑦)]

𝑟=
√[𝑁(∑ 𝑥²) − (∑ 𝑥)²][𝑁(∑ 𝑦²) − (∑ 𝑦)²]

Where:

r = denoted as the Pearson product

x = first set of grades

y = second set of grades

N = number of respondents / students

To find if there is significant difference in the performance in English of the students One

way Anova are used:

F= MST/ MSE

Where:

F = Anova coefficient

MST = mean of sum of squares due to treatment

MSE = mean sum of squares due to error

MST= SST/P-1

SST= ∑n(x-mean)²

Where:

SST = Sum of squares due to treatment

P = Total number of populations

n = The total number of samples in population

MSE= SSE/N-P

SSE= ∑(n-1)∂²

Where:
SSE = sum of squares due to error

S = Standard deviations of the samples

N = Total number of observations

To find the x-axis and y-axis. This Formula was used

V1= P-1 x-axis (numerator)

V2= N-P y-axis (denominator)
