Department of Transport Abu Dhabi Sustainability Report 2014 5

A Message from the Chairman The Department of Transport’s sixth annual sustainability report, themed “embedding
excellence in everything that we do”, is a reaffirmation of our commitment to
sustainability. The report provides us with a valuable opportunity to reflect on the
progress being made by the DoT, and its stakeholders, to create a sustainable Emirate of
Abu Dhabi, through the development and operation of a world-class transport system.

The year 2014 has witnessed Abu Dhabi’s continued development and growth towards
its vision to create a confident, secure society and to build a sustainable, open, and
globally competitive economy. The DoT in Abu Dhabi strives to realise the Emirate’s
vision of sustainable development and growth through its unrelenting commitment to
excellence in sustainability management.

Our sustainability management framework provides direction for our organisation to

focus on improving our performance in the areas that matter the most: congestion
relief; transport safety and security; quality of service; economic return; organisational
excellence and environmental stewardship.

Building on the progress made in 2014, I am confident that we can achieve the
ambitious plans we have for the future. Our success will depend, among other factors,
upon the support of our stakeholders. Hence, we will work together to make smarter
travel choices to ensure the economic growth, quality of life and environmental
sustainability of the Emirate.

I look forward to engaging with you further on the journey towards our vision of a
transport system that supports a sustainable Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Thank you,

Sultan Bin Tahnoon

A Safe Transportation Network In 2014, the Abu Dhabi transport sector

maintained the large gains in transport
safety it had achieved in previous years.
The number of road incident injuries has
decreased by 10% from 2013 to 2014 and
road incident fatalities have decreased by
8%. The number of pedestrian fatalities
remained relatively constant, with 54
fatalities in 2014. Nevertheless, with
road traffic one of the leading causes of
death for young people in the UAE, and
with improvement stalled on pedestrian
fatalities in 2014, reducing the number of
lives lost on Abu Dhabi’s roads remains a
critical objective that the DoT will continue
to pursue. Pursuant to this objective, DoT
reviewed and updated its Road Safety
Strategy in 2014.

DoT’s operational strategy is rooted

in the Abu Dhabi 2030 Vision and
national plans that guide the Emirate’s
overall development and growth.
Organisational excellence, the
foundation for our ability to operate
efficiently and effectively, is achieved
by incorporating long term strategic
planning into our operations and
engaging our workforce. DoT also
pursues excellence in its operations
through the continuous improvement
of core processes and the acceleration

Since our inception in 2006, we have
developed five master plans that
designate the roles, responsibilities,
and trajectory for each of the transport
modes and specific sectors. The first of
our master plans, the Surface Transport
Master Plan (STMP), was issued in 2009
after considerable research, evaluation,
and stakeholder consultation. The STMP
is a comprehensive plan for the future of
the Emirate’s surface transport activities;
it provides valuable insight into the state
of Abu Dhabi’s surface transport sector
and outlines the vision for the future
development of the sector. As such, the
STMP is a central document that guides
DoT’s actions and planning for its surface
transport divisions such as freight, bus,
MAWAQiF, and road infrastructure. In
2013, DoT updated the STMP to reflect
the current conditions of the Emirate’s
surface transport sector and larger trends
in economic and population growth.

*The fluctuation in the amount of solid waste recycled from 2013 to 2014 is due to two factors: the expansion of Khalifa port and the enhancement of its recycling
capability, and the 2014 recycling of some waste generated and stored in 2013.
**DoT is in the process of setting up a recycling system in its new office building; once this system is in place, the organisation expects to see its recycling return to
previous levels.
