1. Calculate the centre of mass for the following shape as measured from point 'O'. Use the geometric
decomposition formulae and show all working. The large cylinder has a density of 7800kg/m3 and
the small cylinder has a density of 2700kg/m3

Combined Bending and Direct Normal Stress [10 marks]
2. The rectangular block of negligible weight below is subjected to a vertical force of 60kN, which is
applied to its corner. Calculate the value of stress at A, B, C and D; and identify the largest normal
stress acting on the section through ABCD (10 marks)

Centripetal and Centrifugal Forces & Applications [10 marks]

1. If the coefficient of static friction between the tires and the road surface is μ=0.6, determine the
maximum speed of the 1.8Mg car without causing it to slide when it travels on the curve. Neglect the
size of the car. (10 marks)

Torsional and Shear Stress [10 marks]

3. The pipe shown below has an inner diameter of 80mm and an outer diameter of 100mm. If its end is
tightened against the support at A using a torque wrench at B, determine the shear stress developed
in the material at the inner and outer walls along the central portion of the pipe when the 80N forces
are applied to the wrench. Calculate:
a) Free Body Diagram (2 Marks)
b) Internal Torque (3 Marks)
c) Section Property (3 Marks)
d) Shear Stress (2 Marks)
