James Orr conhecia a partir das fontes a filosofia e a teologia tanto alemã como da Grã-
Bretanha. Como o seu colega James Denney sustentava basicamente uma posição
evangélica, mas admitia também que era necessário reafirmar a fé no contexto das
novas correntes da filosofia e da teologia. Por isso, chegou a admitir a evolução teísta e
tratou de contradizer o veredito negativo de A. Harnack como dissemos, sobre a história
dos dogmas sustentando que os dogmas foram se desenvolvendo de acordo com uma
lógica interna reconhecível.
