I.PROJECT TITLE:

PROJECT SWAT (SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT) AT BARANGAY MACDU

II. BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE

All over the world, solid waste is the primary problem. Theses solid waste

mostly harm the environment.

Solid waste is the useless, unwanted and discarded material resulting from day

to day activities in the community. Solid waste management may be defined as the

discipline associated with the control of generation, storage, collection, transfer,

processing and disposal of solid waste. There are many kinds of solid waste such as

food waste, rubbish, commercial waste, institutional waste, street sweeping waste,

industrial waste, construction waste and sanitation waste. It contains recyclable (paper,

plastic, glass and metal etc.), toxic substances (paints, pesticides, used batteries,

medicines etc.) Compostable organic matter (fruit and vegetable peels, food waste),

soiled waste (sanitary napkins, etc.) (International Journal of Research in Advent

Technology, 2013).

According to UNEP (2011), “every year, an estimated 11.2 billion tons of solid

waste are collected worldwide and decay of the organic proportion of solid waste is

contributing to about 5 per cent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions” which in

turn accelerates climate change. Clark and Matharu (2013) insist that “the planet

currently generates approximately 1.3Gt of solid waste per year, which is expected to

increase to 2.2Gt by 2025.” This huge amount of waste is a problem, and the question

is how to deal with this waste crisis. Waste management is crucial to reducing the
negative impacts of waste on the environment, and its consequences to human beings.

It is the goal of waste management to treat waste in a safe and proper manner, in order

to minimize harm or damage to the environment. Disposal methods such as landfilling

are directly related to human health issues, as well as the environment.

The solid waste management can be managed in order to benefit from these

wastes and avoid scattering of the said waste. One way to manage is through

composting. This is done by vermin composting of any type of biodegradable wastes

such as refuge, biodegradable portion from residence and commercial market,

vegetable waste, leaf litter, and others (file:///C:/Users/user/Downloads/paperid-

212014116.pdf).

In order to take good care of the environment and to sustain the natural

resources, the proponent conceptualized PROJECT SWAT (SOLID WASTE

MANAGEMENT) AT BARANGAY MACDU to inform and to educate the pupils,

teachers, and especially the community on the proper disposal of the solid waste.

Hence, this PROJECT SWAT (SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT) AT

BARANGAY MACDU is proposed.

III. OBJECTIVE AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES

PROJECT SWAT aims:

a. To educate the learners, teachers, and community on the proper waste

segregation;
b. To introduce and to practice waste segregation to the school and
community;
c. To construct compost using solid waste management; and
d. To show the value of makakalikasan by disposing solid waste properly

IV. TARGET AND BENEFICIARIES

Pupils, teachers, and the community in Macdu

V. PROJECT DESCRIPTION, INTERVENTION, METHODS, AND

STRATEGIES

PROJECT SWAT (SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT) AT BARANGAY

MACDU will be implemented by informing the pupils and the community about the

importance of waste segregation. The project aims to teach the recipient to segregate

their waste with three categories such as biodegradable, nonbiodegradable, and

recyclable. The proponent of the project will coordinate with the barangay captain of

barangay Macdu about the waste segregation in order to inform the people in the

community about the project.

To support the project, there will be three categories of thrush bins or sacks

around the school and in the community. Every Friday, the proponent with the officers

of Science Club will collect the waste. The waste will be used in constructing a

compost. The compost will be used later as fertilizers in the gulayan sa paaralan.
The other waste which can be sold will be sold. The proceeds of the project

will be used by the school.
