CM damper actuator:
Perfection for limited space.

The revolutionary, multi-patented CM rotary actuators prove Belimo’s innovative strengths once again. As thin as
16 mm (without the optional positionindicator), they are flatter than some cell phones and as reliable as all Belimo
actuators: The hardest tests in the industry testify to that with over 100,000 complete cycles and more than a million
partial cycles..

Evolution of PICCV & EPIV Valves 16 April 2015 50

Traditional 3 Port Mixing Valve
Arrangement (Constant Volume)
p1 + p2
• Variable flow through the coils to meet demand
by expensively by-passing unwanted water

• Constant flow through each branch and the

main header p1

• Valve sizing is straightforward – match coil flow

rate and pressure drop (p2)

• Commissioning and balancing is relatively

straightforward

• The main circulating pump is running at

constant speed throughout the occupancy
p1 = Pressure loss of the control valve only
period, delivering the total design volume of all p1+p2 = Total pressure loss of the controlled circuit
cooling coils whatever their demand
BSRIA BG51/2014
• Chiller and coil efficiencies suffer & no pump
energy saving

Evolution of PICCV & EPIV Valves 16 April 2015 51

Pressure Dependent 2 Port Valve
Arrangement (Variable Volume)
• Variable flow through the coils to meet
variable demand

• Variable flow in the main header

• Control valve sizing more difficult, in addition

to the coil, the losses through the
commissioning sets and the branch pipework
also need to be taken into account (p2)

• Commissioning and balancing is more

difficult and takes longer than for 3 and 4
port valves

• The main circulating pump speed is varied to p1 = Pressure loss of the control valve only
p1+p2 = Total pressure loss of the controlled circuit
satisfy the total demand of all the coils at the
time. A near impossible task without pressure
BSRIA BG51/2014
control. Where do we control the pump ?

Evolution of PICCV & EPIV Valves 16 April 2015 52

What must be considered when using
pressure-dependent valves (selection)?

Planning phase
• The kvs-value must be calculated correctly
• Various differential pressure at each valve
• Additional to the control valves balancing valves must
be selected/ordered
• If changes occur other valves are may be necessary
Construction phase
• Balancing valves must be installed
Commissioning
• Hydraulic balancing must be performed carefully to get
the required flows at full load
During operation
• Most of the time operation at partial load
• What is going on in the system is not exactly known
Conversion of the building
• New calculations are necessary
• Maybe other valves are needed

Belimo Energy Valve(TM) August 2014

Conventional ball valves cannot Modulate !

Advantages:

• Large Kvs values

• All sizes 15-150mm
• High tightness
• Low flow resistance
• Maintenance Free
• Resist clogging & sticking

Disadvantages:

• Only on/off Applications

60
Valve Authority

Valve authority is a measure of the change in differential

pressure across a control valve during operation.

A = DPv / (DPv + DPc).

• Pv100 = Pressure drop across a fully open control valve.

• Pc = Pressure drop across the remainder of the circuit.

range between 0.25 – 0.5 as “acceptable”.

Better minValue A = 0.3

What is it that Pressure Independent Control Valves do ?

This is what some manufacturers say........

1. Pressure Independent Balancing & Control Valves provide perfect

control and automatic hydronic balance.

2. Pressure Independent Control Valves (PICV) make a significant

contribution to efficient energy usage and offer cost savings by preventing
over- or under-supply of heating or cooling energy. They also improve the
control accuracy and, therefore, enhance room comfort.

3. Sizing and selection are also much more simplified thanks to the
xxxxxxx maintaining 100% authority at all times

Evolution of PICCV & EPIV Valves 16 April 2015 71

So…..Are all Pressure Independent
Control valves the same ?

No ! ..... There are some important differences

Lets take a closer look

Electronic Pressure Independent Valve
On-Site Benefits
• A smaller pump is required compared to PICV resulting in reduced costs.
• Reduced energy consumption.
• Pump Optimisation.
• Commissioning time is dramatically reduced.
• More information is being provided to the BEMS.
• System performance can be monitored due to integral flow measurement.
• Continual increases in pump speed to maintain flow results in required
maintenance to check strainers.

” The EPIV offers the reality that is pre-set offsite valves. Until now everyone was
second guessing the accuracy of either the measuring station or the PICCV. Is there
enough pressure? This one, simple device cuts through all that and can genuinely be
preconfigured off site. It’s one of the few devices that benefits everyone, consultants,
installers, vendors and end users”

EPIV – Benefits

• Use as ordinary modulating control valve (0-10 V or 2-10V)

• Pressure independent, no balancing – and no balancing valves – required
• Current Flow Feedback "in real-time" (0.5-10 V signal)
• No oscillations (hunting), long system service life
• Simple selection and valve design
• Non-sensitive to dirt  Maintenance-free
• Few moving parts (only valve)  Long service life
• Air bubble-tight  No waste of energy
• Non-sensitive to glycol portion
• High flow precision

Thomas Leser, BELIMO FZE Pressure independent valves April 16, 2013
We can see the progression........

• Mechanical Automatic Flow Limiters (fixed cartridge)

• Mechanical Automatic Flow Limiters (adjustable)
• Mechanical Integrated DP controller Control Valves
(PICV)
• * Electronic Pressure Independent Control Valves (EPIV)

*Although not controlling DP to enhance Authority –

Reading Real Time flow rate and communicating with the
Actuator to adjust to required flow rate.

Enhanced communication.........................and it gets better !

¹ Urban areas are responsible for over 70% of global energy
consumption and CO2 emissions, mostly from buildings.

By 2030, a staggering 82 billion square meters (900 billion

square feet), an area roughly equal to 60% of the total
building stock of the world, will be built and rebuilt in urban
areas worldwide.

This projection provides an unprecedented opportunity to

reduce fossil fuel CO2 emissions by setting the entire global
Building Sector on a path to peak emissions quickly, and
completely phase out CO2 emissions by about 2050.

Why use them ?

The introduction of Variable Speed Drives in Pumps changed things

Flows and Pressures became Variable to save Energy

Manual Balancing fine for Constant flow systems but Not for Variable

Dynamic flow requires Dynamic control

Belimo Safety Solutions Europe 20 April 2013 97

Why use them ?

1. To automatically Balance the System (replace all Balancing Valves)

2. To Control room temperatures by controlling the coil flow

3. To allow the Pump to vary (reduce) speed and save Energy (cost)

4. To help the Chiller and Coils to maintain Efficiency

• The kvs-value must be calculated correctly • Not necessary. Selection according required
• Various differential pressure at each valve volume of water
• Additional to the control valves balancing valves must • No balancing valves needed
be selected/ordered
• If changes occur other valves are may be necessary • Easy setting of Vmax
Construction phase
• Balancing valves must be installed • No balancing valves needed
Commissioning
• Hydraulic balancing must be performed carefully to get • The only thing you have to do is setting Vmax. The
the required flows at full load PI-valve undertakes the balancing.
During operation
• Most of the time operation at partial load • The flow rate is also at partial load operation
• What is going on in the system is not exactly known defined. Energy valve with monitoring function.
Conversion of the building
• New calculations kvs-value are necessary • Not necessary
• Maybe other valves are needed • Easy setting of Vmax within a wide range

When using PICV’s - What should we consider?

1. Flow Rate – can the control valve handle the flow ?

2. Maximum pump head – the valve should control the flow ?

3. Can the actuator close-off against the pump head ?

4. Does the control valve have an EQM characteristic ?

5. Can we flush thru the control valve ?

6. Will the control valve isolate fully ?

7. Is the flow rate adjustable ?

8. Can the flow rate be verified/measured ?

Measuring Flow and T allows us to…

Directly Control Flow or Control Energy, BTU Meter

116
Low Delta T Syndrome………

1. 3-Way Control valves (short circuiting)

2. Blocked strainers/coils
3. Poor pump control (mis-matching supply and demand)
4. Poor coil control (coil efficiency not maintained).
5. Poorly sized and selected control valves (modulating
control requires high authority and EQM characteristic)
6. On/off control
7. System aging

Improper Set-point or Controls Calibration

Probably the most common cause of low delta-T is improper set-points on controllers
controlling supply air temperature off of cooling coils such as those in VAV systems and other
central fan systems. When the set-point of a cooling coil is set too low, the controller causes
the chilled water valve to open fully since it is unable to attain the set-point no matter
how much chilled water flows through the coil. Extract from ASHRAE article

Power Control Function

• The Belimo Energy ValveTM provides the possibility of direct power control
• Power Control allows the controller to call for a specific load to the space
• 0 to 10 VDC = 0 to 100% BTU/h (kW) Capacity

Example: 83 Ton AHU

• 83 Tons ~ 1000 kBTU/h coil
• 3 VDC = 300 kBTU/h
• 7.5 VDC = 750 kBTU/h

Signal / Flow

The first Temperature- and Pressure-independent Valve !

Belimo Energy Valve(TM)

The challenge:
Too low T supply / return
• In many cases heating or cooling systems are operated with a too high flow rate.
• In the event of a too high water throughput:

• The T between supply and return is lower than designed.

• No increase of output power at heating or cooling coil. Therefore no improvement in interior
comfort.
• Considerably more water is pumped around the circuit. This results in disproportionally more
power consumption by the circulation pump.
• The chiller or boiler is operated above the designed operating point. This results in an
inefficient power supply.

• → Additional energy which does Saturation

no result in increased power
output is spent.

optimisation potential
• Systems are operated with too much
volumetric flow of water
• Optimised water quantities can be defined

• Significant reduction of pump energy

• Typically, flow rate reduction > 25%
• Previously, water quantity was too
high by a factor of 2 on some days
 pump energy reduction by 50%

Application of the recorded data
(example new system)

• "For what purpose can the recorded data be used?"

• Monitoring the power performance of the heat exchanger in operation
• "My heat exchanger was optimally designed and energy-efficient
operation was checked and documented at the time of commissioning."
• The circumstances of the entire system change during operation. The
Energy Valve provides all of the data in order to recognise when the
performance worsens.
• "What does change?"

Application of the recorded data
(example new system)

• Conclusion:
• Every system exhibits changes during operation
• With the aid of the data made available, changes can be readily noted and
suitable measures can be implemented
• Ensuring energy efficiency in operation, not only at the time of
commissioning
• Data make it possible to plan/execute maintenance on the basis of ACTUAL
performance

• In the case of new systems, the Energy Valve helps secure the
preservation of value.

Application of the recorded data
(example retrofit)

• "I would like to replace the valve in my existing system. Unfortunately, the
system data is no longer known due to its age and the various
adjustments that have been made since its commissioning."
• The Energy Valve is the ideal solution in such cases.
• "Why is that? What does the Energy Valve offer that a conventional valve
does not?"
• If no hydraulic data is available, then the same valve DN can be selected as
the heat exchanger connection DN. After the commissioning, a variety of
system data is recorded by the Energy Valve. Such things as the
characteristic curve of the heater can be reconstructed with the help of this
data. A retroactive change in the maximum flow rate can be quickly and
simply implemented .
