Abstract

Title: Parents’ Perception on Participation in School-Based Feeding Program at Tanzang Luma

Elementary School

Parents’ of the beneficiary should be involved during the implementation process of the School-
Based Feeding Program. They have duties and responsibilities to be done in the program. The
program will be more successful if parents are going to participate. The objective of this study
was to increase by at least 75% (49) parents’ involvement in the School Based Feeding Program.
The descriptive-survey method was used in this study in order to determine parents’ participation
in School-Based Feeding Program. The researchers used questionnaires, observations, interviews
and survey. The questionnaires were given after the meeting of School-Based Feeding Program.
Observation refers to what researchers perceive in parents’ participation in School-Based Feeding
Program. Parents’ interviews were done informally before or after the meeting.Respondents of
the study were 65 parents’ beneficiaries of the School Based Feeding Program (SBFP).
In the data gathered, 43 out of 65 didn’t attend the meeting because letters of invitation were not
given ahead of time. During the implementation plan, 51 out of 65 (78%) parents’ of the
beneficiaries attended the SBFP Meeting. Results of survey done, were five (5) parents do not have
nanny to take care of their children, three (3) parents had urgent appointment, one (1) parent got
sick, four (4) and forty three (43) parents says they have no letters received. It was concluded that
parents have personal reasons for not attending the meeting. Based on the findings the researchers
recommended intensive monitoring of parents’ participation in SBFP is a must to heighten the
percentage of parents’ attendance. Give them importance, have them feel that they are part of the
program and appreciate their efforts.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Nutritional status of learners was obtained during the month of June. It was clearly stated

on it the learners from Kinder to Grade 6 who were belong to severely wasted and wasted category.

These pupils will be the beneficiary of School Based Feeding Program.

However, parents of the beneficiary should be involved during the implementation process.

They have duties and responsibilities to be done in the program. The program will be more

successful if parents are going to participate. The objective of this study was to increase by at least

75% (49) parents’ involvement in the School Based Feeding Program.

School Feeding Programs are considered to be a sound investment in education. There is

evidence that school feeding programs increase school enrollment, cognition and educational

achievement particularly if supported by complementary actions such as deworming and

micronutrient fortification or supplementation (D.O. No. 51, s. 2016).

The children were also observed to have better class participation and exhibit positive health

habits such as washing of hands before and after eating, tooth brushing, and general good grooming

behavior. These findings were affirmed by the result of the impact study done by the Philippine

Institute of Developmental Studies (PIDS) in 2015 (D.O. No. 51, s. 2016).

As cited in D.O. No. 37, s. 2014, the Department of Education recognizes the importance of good

nutrition for the improvement of academic performance of learners. It is considered to be a sound

investment in education as it is associated with increased enrolment, improve attendance, better

performance, decreased repetition, and decreased dropout.

Review of Related Literature

According to Chepkwony (2013)the School Feeding Program (SFP) is an essential aspect

of child growth and holistic development. To establish a functional (SFP), parents should be

involved in all procedures to ensure sustainability of the program which will cater for children

from diverse socio-economic background hence academic achievements among Early Childhood

and Development (ECDE) children.

In the study conducted by A. Dalmaet al. (2016)most of the parents referred to the Mediterranean

diet as a healthy dietary pattern. Nearly all parents were aware of their effect as role models and

commented on the benefits of eating together as a family, as well as on the importance of

improving their own dietary habits. Parents reported using various methods to promote a healthy

diet, as part of their parenting role. They perceived their role as difficult, as they have to deal with

children's resistance, financial constraints arising from the current economic crisis in Greece and

busy work schedules. All students perceived the school feeding programme as health-promoting,

reflecting their parents' perceptions.

Ickes (2016) concluded the involvement of parents in school-based programs, and in children’s

PAN more broadly, is an important and modifiable underlying influence of children’s nutrition.

The results from this study provide support for the hypothesis that the abilities of parents to

perform nutrition and physical practices relate to interrelated capacities for parenting.

Research Questions

This study is conducted to find out the reasons for not participating and wants and needs of parents

in the feeding program.

1. What is the level of percentage of parents’ participation in School Based Feeding Program

3.1 First and Second Orientation

3.2 Pilot Test Process Results

3.3 Roll – out Plan

2. What are the reasons of parents for not participating during the implementation of School

Based Feeding Program?

3. What are their needs and wants in the School-Based Feeding Program?

4. What are the solutions to increase the parents’ participation in School Based Feeding

Program?

Scope and Limitation

This research will determine the participation of parents in the School-Based Feeding Program

(SBFP) at Tanzang Luma Elementary School through invitation, orientation, delegation of task

and supervision.

The respondents of this study were65 parents’ beneficiaries of the School-Based Feeding Program

(SBFP). Parents was given a task to perform during the program. It was given during the meeting

of SBFP. SBFP coordinator was assigned to delegate the task to parents.

Parents was given a questionnaires and they were interviewed after the meeting. Process

owner of the School-Based Feeding Program were also given a 4 item questionnaires.

CHAPTER II
Research Method

Research Design

The descriptive-survey method was used in this study, and descriptive means that surveys are

prepared in order to determine parents’ participation in School-Based Feeding Program and the

word survey signifies a study of a field to discover the typical condition is obtaining. The

researchers used questionnaires, observations, interviews and survey. The questionnaires were

given after the School-Based Feeding Program. Observation refers to what researchers perceive in

parents’ participation in School-Based Feeding Program. Parents’ interviews were done

informally before or after the meeting.

Sampling

The study was conducted at Tanzang Luma Elementary School, Tanzang Luma V, Imus

City. It is belong to the Division of Imus City. At present, Mrs. Marissa D.O. Agco is taking care

of the institution. She has done changes and improvements for the school environment and pupils.

Participants of the study were 65 parents’ beneficiaries of the School Based Feeding Program

(SBFP). Parents were going to answer the questionnaire. Other parents who did not attend the

meeting were home visited by the researchers.

Data Collection

The questionnaires were administered after the School Based Feeding Program meeting.

They were assigned in a room to answer it. Questionnaires able to assess and determine the reasons

for not attending the meeting and participation during the feeding process.

Process owner of the School Based Feeding Program were interview to gather and validate

the data. It was composed of three questions.

Parents are the participants to answer the questions because they are vital contributor to

make the feeding program successful. They possess important part of the program because they

have assigned task to be given.

Ethical Issues

The School Based Feeding Program is to be implemented in school level in accordance

with decentralization efforts introduced through R.A. 9155 and the policy principles of School

Based-Based Management (SBM) of Department of Education. It is expected that the SBFP will

be included as a part of the School Improvement Plan (SIP)

Deped Order No. 51 S. 2016 entitled “Implementation of the School-Based Feeding Program for

the School Year 2016-2017” under its Operational Guidelines (V-C.2.e-f) states that the school

should identified parents/volunteers who shall help in the whole duration of the program and

schedule parents/volunteers who shall prepare and cook the menu for the day, prepare the feeding

area, supervise the daily feeding and wash the dishes.

The respondents of this study were 65 parents’ of the beneficiaries of School-based Feeding

Program. This study aim to find out the reasons for not participating and wants and needs of

parents in the feeding program. The data gathered in the questionnaires, surveys and interviews

were very much confidential. The researchers stated the authors and their studies used in this

research.
