(Large Pipe Desuperheater)
Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual
Principle of Operation:
The B-Tech LPD desuperheater provides automatic and constant control of steam temperature
by responding to the temperature controller’s input signal. The desuperheating process is carried
out by injection water into the steam to provide cooling to a thermodynamic heat balance at a
constant pressure.
The desuperheating water enter the desuperheater thru the water flange at 45psi above the
steam pressure. The water flows down thru the body to the tight shutoff seat above the disc.
When the control system signals actuator that cooling is required, the stem/disc moves
downward, uncovering the micro nozzles in the sprayhead until the required water flow is met.
The water leaves the nozzles in a flat fan pattern allowing the steam to contact it above and
below.
The sprayhead sizing is based on the maximum water flow required at the worst case pressure
and temperature. The valve will operate with a linier flow characteristic. Normal operating range
on the valve is 8% to 100% of valve travel.
The B-Tech certified drawing contains the operating conditions, if they differ from your actual
conditions, please contact the customer service department at B-tech Valve.

Standard specifications:
Pressure & Temperature Ratings: ASME B16.34
Raised Face Flanges (other faces available): ASME 16.5
Body ASME SA-335 P11/182-F11, ASME SA-217-WC9/182-F22 or ASME SA182-F347H
Cooling water supply pressure is measured at the desuperheater inlet flange after the strainer.
Steam line and valve outlet flange is 3”(80DN) raised face. The flange, extension pipe and
weldolet can have a bore of down to 3” Sch.160 (2.6”dia. minimum clearance).
Valve actuator and postioner information is per the outline drawing supplied for the order.

The required Instrument air supply 50psig with air filter/regulator set per assembly drawing.
The actuator air & signal will fail the valve close unless otherwise stated on the outline drawing
supplied for the order.

Unpacking Preparation and Storage:

Upon receipt of the valve check the shipping crate for any sign of damage. Verify the all
paperwork and parts if any are found in the shipping crate. Use this crate for protection, storage
and transportation of the valve. Store the valve indoors in a dry area. If this is not possible, raise
the box above ground and cover it with plastic.
Lift valve from the box using straps around the body at the inlet flange. DO NOT lift the valve by
the actuator yoke.

Long term Storage:

Remove packing and cosmoline the flanges, stem and stuffing box.

Preparation for installation:

Remove all packing material except the paper around the probe/sprayhead. Leave this on to
protect the micro nozzles.

Installation:
Transport to job site and line probe up with steam flange. Remove the paper from around the
probe and insert into the steam pipeline with the nozzle facing down stream. See B-Tech /Valve
certified drawing for each valve Ser.# and Tag#.

Main Steam Line:

The desuperheater requires a minimum of 15ft of straight pipe down stream before the first bend
and 6 straight pipe diameters up stream.
No branching is allowed between the desuperheater and the temperature sensor.
All pipe bends should be long radius type to keep the water in suspension until it evaporates.
Avoid Tees between the desuperheater and the temperature sensor.

The temperature sensor should be mounted 40Ft down stream of the desupreheater, in the top of
the pipe +/-45Deg from vertical.

Pipe Mounting Orientation:

The desuperheater is to be inserted at 90deg. from the run centerline of the steam pipeline.
The vertical up is the preferred position for the valve stem and actuator. In any other position the
actuator may need to be supported. Avoid the bottom +/-45deg. of the pipe. (If the packing leaks
water could get into the bottom of the actuator.)

Cooling water is to be boiler feed grade cleaned and filtered thru a .020” mesh strainer sized for
the flow required. B-Tech recommends that the cooling water line includes a locked open shutoff
valve and a .020” mesh strainer sized for the flow required. The cooling water line must be
completely flushed before connecting to the desuperheater. The water line pressure at the
desuperheater inlet must be the same as the pressure listed on the certified drawing.

Steam Line Connection:

Mounting flange and pipe:

The mounting flange and the weld-o-let have standard dimensions. The pipe between them is cut
to achieve the “X” dimension listed on the certified drawing. This will properly locate the spray
head in the pipe when the probe is inserted. All piping is to be to pressure tested to ASME B31.1
Power Piping Code or equal prior to use.
Run water thru the water line from the strainer to the flange connection before connecting
it to the desuperheater. This will wash out any contaminates.

Mounting:
Use only gasket and bolting that meet ASME B31.1.
Put gasket around probe and hold against the desuperheater’s flange.
Line up desuperheater with mounting flange bore on steam pipe.
Remove protection paper from around the probe.
Verify that the nozzles are facing in the down stream direction of the steam flow.
Carefully insert probe into mounting flange and line up gasket with the flanges’ gasket faces.
Assemble all the bolting and torque nuts to the require torque.
Flush and clean water and air lines before connecting.
Connect water line with the gasket & bolting and torque to required spec.

If the positioner is in an inaccessible position, perform the following:

1-Conect an air hose to the air filter regulator.
2-Signal the positioner with a 12maDC or an 8psi signal. This will open the valve.
3-Loosen the yoke nut with a hammer & drift & slowly rotate the actuator into the desired position
for easy access.
4-Remove the signal and air from the positioner.
5-Tighten the yoke nut with a bar and hammer.
6-Connect up the permanent electric and air lines as per above.

Operating controls:
Verify that the temperature sensor, the signal transmitter and the controller are all calibrated to
the operating temperature range that the system will be working in.
The temperature sensor’s location should be 40FT down stream of the desuperheater.
If steam pressure varies widely, a self-adjusting pressure loop can be added to adjust the set
point to keep the system as close to saturation as possible.

The desuperheater positioner is calibrated at the factory and no adjustments are needed.

Mount the instrument air line to the Air Filter Pressure Regulator after cleaning. The AFPR has
also been set at the factory.
The instrument signal is connected next.
P to P: Air lines with a 3-15psig signal (verify the pressure does not exceed controller’s spec.)
I to P: Wires with a 4-20mADC signal (verify the voltage and amperage does not exceed
controller’s spec.)
The standard desuperheater will at “no signal” be closed and the actuator will be in the up
position. As signal increases the actuator will put air to the top or its diaphragm and the
stem/coupling will move toward the valve, opening the desuperheater.
Decreasing the signal will close the valve.

Start up:
Tune on the control system. And verify that the desuperheater is in the closed position.
Set you controller to the desired temperature.
Open the steam valve.
The desuperheater may not control the steam temperature below the minimum steam flow listed
on the B-Tech Valve certified drawing. Once the minimum flow point is reached the
desuperheater will control the temperature to within 10Deg.F (6Deg.C) above the saturation point
at the steam pressure and within 1% of the control system.

Maintenance:
Review the B-Tech Valve certified drawing which give the valves specified operating conditions.
The valve’s ability to maintain control temperature over a range of conditions will give proof of
performance.
Readjustments and disassembly should not be scheduled without cause. Yearly performance
checks should be evaluated. B-Tech recommends an inspection once every 3 year (every year if
plant service is severe).

Inspection:
Check the current operating conditions and see how they compare to those on the certified
drawing.
Estimate the valve’s operating position from the current conditions.
Check the stem’s actual position.
Check the valve stem’s packing. It should look slightly wet.
Check to make sure the packing gland is centered around the stem.
Check to assure the valve stem is smooth and not scored do to rubbing or binding.
Check the air system pressure and the air filter.
Check the signal from the controller.
Inspect the positioner’s linkage to assure nothing is binding.
Compare the actual steam temperature to the controller’s set point temperature.
Blow down the water strainer.

Disassembly, Inspection and Overhaul:

Warning: superheater steam and high pressure water can kill.

Isolate the desuperheater’s steam pipe with block valves, depressurize and let it cool.
Shut off water supply.
Stroke valve to the full open and full close position checking for smoothness of operation.
After the pipelines are cooled and depressureized unbolt the flanges, disconnect the air lines and
remove the actuator/desuperheater assembly.
Caution: Use care in lifting as not to damage the linkages and air lines or the nozzles on the
spray cylinder.
Connect a temporary supply of water to the inlet port.
Increase the pressure to the operating differential pressure (difference between the steam
pressure and the water pressure).
Factory Test: Leakage allowed 10cc/hr or 3 drops/min at differential listed on the certified
drawing.

Disassemble with valve in bench vise:

1-Mark body and spray cylinder with alignment marks.
2-Grind of the 4 tact welds on the coupling nut.
3-Fastener ring has right and left hand threads on it and has RT and LT stamped at the ends
where the threads are. With probe sideways and your back toward the top and your left side next
to the desuperheater, pulling up on a wrench in front of you will loosen the fastener ring (or facing
the cylinder) turn the fastener ring clockwise. The body and cylinder will move away from each
other.
4-Puttting air to the actuator will allow you to see the seats and the piston rings.

Reassemble with valve in bench vise:

1-line up the marks on the body and spray cylinder.
2-The fastener ring has right and left hand threads on it and has RT and LT stamped at the ends
where the threads are. LT is the body end and RT is the cylinder end.

pushing down on a wrench in front of you will tighten the fastener ring (or facing the cylinder) turn
the fastener ring counter clockwise. The body and cylinder will move toward from each other.
There should be a gap at each end of the ring. Tighten to 40 to 50 Ft-lb(54-68N-m)
3-Replace the 4 tack welds using welding filler Spec. SFA 5.9, AWS-NO.-ER 309. No preheat or
post weld heat treat is required.

Trouble Shooting:
Valve goes to full open position and stays there.
a. Temperature “Set Point” is below the saturation temperature of the steam at that pressure.
b. Steam flow is below the minimum flow.
c. Controller’s signal is reversed.

Valve does not open.

a. Is the steam temperature above the set point?
b. Is the actuator air on?
c. Is there a signal from the control?
