Reading the Electrical diagram

20.11.2006
RTG-Training/AT V.1.1 1
Single line diagram

The Single line diagram is used to understand the basic construction of the system. It displays
the main electrical components and how they connect together. It may also display different
ratings for devices (fuse size, motor ratings, etc.) The RTG Single line diagram displays the
components that are connected to the voltage systems that exceed +24VDC.

2
Circuit diagram

The Circuit diagram displays all the circuits in detail. It shows all the electrical components and
circuits that are used on the RTG. The diagram includes the Index page, circuit diagrams, cable
list, connector list and device list.

4
Coordinate system

The coordinate system is used to find

specific locations on different pages.

First in the address is the page ID,

then the coordinate.

complete set

6
Index page

The Title page is the first page of the circuit diagram. It displays all the pages in the diagram.
It shows you the page-ID and the title. This Index only gives you a basic idea of what is on each page.

7
Cable list

The Cable list displays all the cables used in the system. It displays:
-The cable ID-symbol,
-Type of cable used with manufacturers code
-Marking or color coding of the individual conduits
-Location of individual conduits in the circuit diagram
8
Connector list

The Connector list displays all the connectors used in the system. From
this, you can see the ID-symbol for the connector and location to the circuit
diagram for connectors used.

9
Device list

The Device list displays all the different devices that are used in the system. Also
displayed:
-Symbolic ID for the device
-General location
-Case location
-Page location & coordinate in the circuit diagram.
10
Device & Conduit labeling

Individual line number, refers to Circuit

11
Symbolic letters

A = Electrical device, -component U = Inverter, rectifier

B = Magnetic sensor, engine speed sensor W = Cable
C = Capacitor X = Connection, junction box, terminal strip
D = Diode Y = Solenoid
E = Light, work light, driving light Z = Varistor, interference filter
F = Circuit protection, fuse
G = Power supply, generator, battery
H = Indicator, buzzer, light
K = Relay, contactor
L = Line reactor
M = Motor
P = Gauge
Q = Main switch
R = Resistor
S = Switch, inductive switch
T = Transformer 12
ID-number

The second part of the Device ID shows the location where the device is
located:

001-0099 = Auxiliary Diesel

01-099 = Power Unit
1 - 99 = EE-house
100 - 199 = Front Sill Beam
200 - 299 = Rear Sill Beam
300 - 399 = Left Main Cross Beam
400 - 499 = Right Main Cross Beam
500 - 599 = Festoon
600 - 699 = Trolley
700 - 799 = Cabin
800 - 899 = Head Block
900 - 999 = Spreader

13
Lines exiting & entering

When reading diagrams with the computer, you can

jump to the exiting location by moving the cursor on
top of the address

Label on line indicating this location

Arrow indicating direction away from power supply, towards end of circuit

Circuit diagram page & coordinate where line continues

14
Relays & contactors

Address at the coil shows where

the chart for all the connections is
located
Chart shows all the
connections that the relay has,
the ones used have the
address where the connection
can be found. Address under
the ID indicates where the coil
is located

15
PLC-Lay out pages

These pages show the lay out of the components at a location.

Unit ID-symbols
Component type from the manufacturers code (ex.SM321 DI32X24VDC)
Circuit diagram address at every location that is used
Range of I&O PLC-address for every component (ex.I8.0-11.7)

16
Different voltages

Some PLC-output units use different voltage for some of there outputs. The PLC-Power
distribution- page can be used to see this.

In this example unit –A22 is supplying

two different voltages, +24VDC &
220VAC.

17
Inputs & Outputs

The box indicates:

-What device the line is connected to
-What is the PLC-address
-What pin or terminal the line is connected at the component
-Address under is to the lay out page of the entire component

In Siemens Step7:
I = Input
Q = Output
