PMI-MASTER SMART
Determination of Ferrous Alloys

INTRODUCTION
The PMI-MASTER Smart provides a breakthrough for OES metal analysis in hard
to reach places. It is the consequent next development step of Hitachi’s market-
leading mobile OES metal analyser portfolio, incorporating the know-how of the
PMI-MASTER series and concept of the ARC-MET analysers. As a
result, the PMI-MASTER Smart is the only true portable optical emission
spectrometer available.
It is a rugged optical emission spectrometer for the precise analysis of key elements, rapid material
verification, PMI and sorting of different metals. The PMI-MASTER Smart offers high analytical
performance, unparalleled portability, striking convenience and ease of use.

Convenient, reliable, flexible on-site metal analysis for inspections, quality control and
safety procedures in:

| Plant engineering & constructions.

| Inspections & PMI.
| Petrochemical & chemical.
| Mechanical engineering.
| Metal recycling.
| Power plants.
| Aviation & automotive.
| Police, fire brigades, armed forces.

PMI-MASTER SMART
Determination of Ferrous Alloys

This application note describes the analysis of Ferrous based metals and alloys
at best analytical performance with the PMI-MASTER Smart.
The data presented in this application note demonstrates that the PMI-MASTER Smart provides
repeatable and accurate results within seconds for the cost-effective determination of ferrous based
alloys and material identification.

Ferrous alloys cover the wide range from low alloy steels including free-cutting-steels with S and
Pb, high alloyed steels such as austenitic, ferritic and duplex steels and white cast iron including
the Magnesium determination for ductile alloys. Furthermore the PMI-MASTER Smart allows the
measurement of high alloyed cast iron like Cr-Hard or Ni-Resist alloys. Special steels like high alloyed
tool or manganese steels are possible, too. Virtually every ferrous alloy can be measured accurately on-
site with this versatile instrument.

SAMPLE PREPARATION
It is necessary to grind, lathe or mill the specimens in case the measurements are conducted with
spark excitation in argon. All coatings have to be carefully removed from the surface. Although a set of
adapters allow the measurement on irregular surfaces the results presented in this application note can
only be obtained on flat surfaces. For arc excitation in air a simplified preparation might be sufficient,
depending on the level of accepted performance. Massive layers of rust, dirt or grease should be
removed, too.

PERFORMANCE DATA DISCLAIMER

Calibration ranges can be extended with customer’s samples. Values

obtained for certified reference samples only! Samples must be flat grinded
or milled!
Precision in ARC is strongly depending on sample and environmental conditions. Therefore it is
strongly recommended to test the questionable material prior to precision statements!

The published values are averaged data from very different type of material and should be
regarded as “typical” values.
