Mentalization is the process by which we implicitly

and explicitly interpret the actions of ourselves and others
as meaningful on the basis of intentional mental.
Unsurprisingly people with mental health problems have
been shown to have mentalizing problems, that is,
understanding their own mental states and those of
others. Mentalizing deficits have been demonstrated
in schizophrenia, personality disorder, autistic
spectrum disorder, depression and other psychiatric
disorders although the causes of the mentalizing
problems differ in the different disorders. Nevertheless
mentalizing problems contribute to the clinical
presentation of all mental health disorders and as a result
it is important that mental health professionals have an
understanding of mentalizing and how to help patients
improve their mentalizing capacities.

About the Speaker

Prof Anthony Bateman is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist at
Anna Freud Centre, London. He is also a Visiting Professor at University
College, London and a Honorary Professor in Psychotherapy at the
University of Copenhagen. He developed mentalization based treatment
with Peter Fonagy for borderline personality disorder and studied its
effectiveness in research trials. Adapted versions are now being used in
multi-centre trials for antisocial personality disorder, eating disorders,
and drug addiction. He was an expert member of National Institute
for Clinical Excellence (NICE) development group for treatment guidelines for
Borderline Personality Disorder in UK and is currently Chair of the
National Guideline Development Group for Eating Disorders.
 WORKSHOP 1
Mentalizing Skills for
Mental Health Professionals

This workshop will increase the knowledge of
clinicians about how mentalizing develops,
why it is central to mental function and equip
them with the skill to use mentalizing
interventions with a range of patients. The
main emphasis will be on the clinician’s
attitude to the patient and how to use the
relationship with the patient effectively to
help the patient regulate affect, re-integrate
psychotic processes, and develop more
constructive relationships. General psychiatric
disorders, eating disorders, and personality
disorders will be discussed.

All interested mental health professionals
including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses,
social workers, case managers and
counselors; practitioners working in the
community with mental health patients.
WORKSHOP 2
Mentalizing Mothers and
Children, Families, and Adolescents
Date : Sat, 16 Jan 2016
Time : 9am - 5pm
(Registration starts from 8.30am)
Venue : Khoo Teck Puat Hospital
This workshop will introduce clinicians to
mentalizing for families and adolescents.
The developmental understanding of
mentalizing will be outlined and the use
of MBT for families and MBT for
adolescents discussed.
Who will benefit from this workshop?
All interested mental health professionals
including psychiatrists, psychologists,
nurses, social workers, case managers and
counselors who work with children and
families and adolescents in health, social,
and educational settings.
• Video and role plays will be used to support
delivery of both workshops.
• No prior experience of mentalizing or
training in psychotherapy is required.

• Demonstrate an understanding of the mentalizing problems of people with mental
health problems
• Recognise mentalizing and non-mentalizing interventions
• Develop and maintain a mentalizing therapeutic stance
• Use some basic mentalizing techniques in everyday clinical work
