GROUP 6 Chapter 7 Gas Turbine Power Plant (Terms)

1. Gas Turbine is a prime mover that derives its energy from heat.
2. Aeronautical jet engine is a specialized gas turbine plant whose net output is a kinetic
propulsion jet of the working medium rather than shaft work.
3. Pressure Ratio is the ratio of high to low pressure.
4. Nozzle is a relatively simple device, just a specially shaped tube through which hot gases
flow.
5. In the gas turbine a stationary nozzle discharges a jet of gas.
6. Prime Mover is an engine that converts fuel to useful work.
7. Constant pressure is where isobaric process occurs.
8. Fuel-air Ratio is the mass ratio of air to a solid, liquid, or gaseous fuel present in a
combustion process.
9. Mach Number is a dimensionless value useful for analyzing fluid flow dynamics
problems where compressibility is a significant factor.
10. Turbine efficiency is the ratio of actual work output of the turbine to the net input energy
supplied in the form of fuel.
11. Remainder is used to compress the air for combustion.
12. Turbine Blades are responsible for extracting energy from the high temperature, high
pressure gas produced by the combustor.
13. Compressor is where the air from the atmosphere is compressed.
14. Combustion chamber is where the compressed air enters and where the fuel is burned.
15. In a closed loop cycle, heat exchanger is used as replacement for combustion chamber.
16. Axial flow type is favored by for stationary plants because of its efficiency and inherent
high rotative speed.
17. The process where the pressure and temperature increases in constant entropy is called
isentropic compression.
18. Turbine is where the high temperature high energy content exhaust gas from combustion
chamber are allowed to expand.
19. The open loop gas turbine consists of a compressor, combustion chamber and turbine.
20. Some part of the work done in the turbine is invested back to the compressor.
21. There is no heat added or removed in a system in an isobaric process.
22. The process where the pressure and temperature decreases in constant entropy is called
isentropic expansion.
23. The two kinds of gas turbine are the Open Loop Gas Turbine and the Closed Loop Gas
Turbine.
24. The performance of actual compressors is described by compressor efficiency.
25. The principal refinements of Gas turbine are: Regeneration, Intercooling and Reheat.
26. Regeneration is the transfer of heat energy from exhaust gases to compressed air flowing
between the compressor and combustion chamber.
27. The surface heater required in regeneration is called regenerator.
28. Intercooling is the removal of heat from compressed air between stages of compression.
29. Intercooling reduces the internal consumption of turbine power by the plant.
30. Reheating is the increase of temperature of partially expanded gas by burning more fuel
in it.
31. Regeneration contributes appreciably to the turbine fuel rate reduction.
32. Regeneration is only possible if temperature of gas at the turbine is higher than that of the
compressor exit.
33. Intercooling involves two compressors keeping an intercooler between them.
34. Intercooling improves efficiency of compressor but does not improve thermal efficiency.
35. Reheating involves two turbines and a heat exchanger between them.
36. Steady flow compression or expansion work is proportional to the s of fluid.
37. 80% of theoretical available energy should be converted into shaft work.
38. Impulse force is transmitted as mechanical torque to the shaft.
39. Diffusion slows down the air velocity and increases pressure.
40. Airscrew is the so-called “turboprop engine”.
41. High-speed turbines are built for hot gases enough to be incandescent.
42. Turbine efficiency is the ratio of actual work output of the turbine to the work obtainable
from an isentropic process.
43. Modern gas turbine plants are based on continuous flow cycle of the medium.
44. Axial-flow compressors are favored type of compressor for stationary gas turbine plants.
45. Back Work Ratio is approximately 50 to 75%
46. The compressor executes a polytropic compression of the air.
47. Primary governor is controlled by varying the fuel oil pressures to the nozzles.
48. The common application of gas turbine is in airplane.
49. Compressor efficiency is also called as “internal efficiency”.
50. Gas turbine plants can be auxiliary to a large steam plant.
