CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the

problem, the significance of the study and its scope and delimitations.

Background of the Study

Family is the one of the factors or inspiration why students are studying. It

can be the parents, the siblings, or any of the close members in the family. The

researchers choose this topic because its objectives is to know the influence and

the involvement of the students relatives in terms of choosing their strand. The

study will assess the relationship of having family who have an occupation in

business practicing professions in career decision making of ABM students.

Parents serve as major influence in their children’s career development and

decision making. Parents want their children to be successful in life. And one factor

which influences happiness and success is career choice (Keller 2004)

Based on the study of Nadya A.F., Shin-ye Kim, Arpita G., Wen-shin Chang,

and Catia F. (2015), there study found support for the construct validity and the

four different types of family influences both between the United States and the

Indian population. Family influence was correlated in expected ways with family

obligation, work volition, calling, and occupational engagement.

In Philippines the Filipinos have a large respect to their parents like their

siblings follow the kind of job their parents have. Respect for family is one of the

most influential factor that impact Filipino students’ career decision. It is concurred

that “One of respect and loyalty, it may not be appropriate to express personal

desires; rather, one may alter one’s interests to maintain harmony. Kathy, (2009)

According to SCCT research, their research topic focused on the role

of parents, families, teachers, councillors, mentors, or role models in general as

supportive influence, their research found that in the students’ education and

career decision making there’s a positive influence on the student by that groups.

Based on the study of Dr. Nancy T. P. in the University of Rizal System’

Laboratory School in Morong Rizal, she concluded that parents should also be

included in the career program development of student so that they themselves

can understand and help student choose which course best fit their child’s

personality, interest, and intellectual ability.

(Abarro, 2016) Based on the study result of ‘Factors Affecting Career Track

and Strand Choices of Grade 9 Students in the Division of Antipolo and Rizal,

Philippines. It implies that sex average monthly family income, school preferences,

occupation of the head of the family and average educational rating in the

preceding years are factors associated to the career track choice of the students,

while highest educational attainment of the head of the family and persons

influential in the choice of career track are not associated with the career track

choices.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to help students especially the students who

are taking an ABM strand in having a closed family member in business practicing

professions to their career decision making.

More specifically, it will seek answers to the following questions:

1. How does your closed family member in business practicing professionals can

help to your career decision making?

2. Do you think having a family member in business practicing professions is an

advantage or disadvantage in your study?

3. Why do you want to pursue a course in college that incline in ABM strand?

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

The focus of the study is to know the influence of closed family members in

business practicing professionals to career decision making. The participants of

this study are whether Grade 11 or Grade 12 ABM students in Antipolo City Senior

High School. A total of 15 participants in ABM students. The study will conduct an

interview on the second quarter of the first semester of the School Year 2019-

2020.

The Information will be based on the response of the participants. This study

is for the selected ABM students who have closed relatives graduated under

Accountancy and Business Management professions.

Significance of the Study

The study will proof that if having a family member in Business Practicing

professions really influence the students.

To the Students. The study may have a basis for students who are

planning for their career decision making. Moreover, this study may help the

student on what path she / he will follow.

To the Parents. The parents may be informed on their children about their

influence in career decision making of their children and pay more attention on the

future of their children.

To the Researchers. It will give a new information and learning to the

researchers that may apply in their life as they decide on what track and strand

they will pursue.

To the Future Researchers. To have a basis in making research with their

topic regarding reasons why ABM students chose to take this strand. In order to

help the future researchers to find out the influences of closed relatives on a

student’s decision on taking a path that he/she will pursue.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies, the

conceptual models of the study, the research assumptions and the definition of

terms used in this study.

Related Literature

The following literatures are found to be related to the study as it focuses

on:

1. Family Influence in Career Decision Making

The study conducted by A. Fouad, et al. (2015) there study examined the

nomological network for the family influence scale in the United States and India.

Specifically, the study assessed the relationship between family influence on

career decision making and the constructs of family obligation, work volition,

calling, work values, and occupational engagement across two countries. A total

of 136 U.S. participants and 377 participants from India responded to a survey via

Amazon Mechanical Turk. The study found support for the construct validity and

the four different types of family influences both between the United States and the

Indian population. Family influence was correlated in expected ways with family

obligation, work volition, work values, calling, and occupation engagement.

Rivera and Schaefer (2009) conducted a review of the literature on career

development in schools and present a school-wide career development program

that is integrated into the school curriculum in collaboration with teachers and

begins in the sixth grade. Based on their research, they found out that, as students

engage in career development interventions that are geared toward identifying

their interests, skills, and aspirations, the activities will also assist in developing

their decision-making skills, create an understanding of the consequences of their

decisions, and identify and begin to implement short- and long-term goals. Also

the article acknowledges the role career development plays from a lifespan

development angle. Therefore, by attending the students’ to career development,

school counselors, in collaboration with other school personnel, can facilitate

students’ ability to achieve academically while also attending to their social-

personal development. The article describes that, the goal of this is to provide

career development interventions in the sixth grade and continue through the other

grade levels. The model further promotes a pattern that allows school counselors

to have a profound impact on achieving positive change within a school.

Regardless of the appropriate age group or grade level, researchers encourage

school counselors to be the catalyst for the career development process.

2. Career Decision Making

According to the study of Xing X. and Rojewski W. J. (2018), in the study of

carer decision making, they examined the role of selected family variable in

predicting 587 Chinese secondary vocational students’ career decision making

self-efficacy. Family structure variables that reflected family members’

socioeconomic status and family process-oriented variables, especially, parental

career-related behaviours, were examined. And their study found out that parental

generally psychosocial support was a statistically significant factor in predicting

career decision making self-efficacy, explaining 38.3% of the variance of this

construct for Chinese secondary vocational students. (Whiston & Keller, 2004),

said that family, as a primary source of social support, exerts a substantial

influence on adolescents’ career development and decision-making process

According to the study of Simmons (2008). He recognized that concern is

on the rise over parental involvement in students’ relied on their parents for general

support and as source of advice about academic and career decision. Parallel to

the study of Smith-Adcock, and Villares (2006). They found that by monitoring

homework, social activitis, and children’s school performance supported

achievement among students. Students who reported that their parents were

heavily involved stated that their involvement was in direct relation to clubs,

organizations, or activities in which the students had some level of involvement.

For example, When students responded to question two (“Which

parent was most involved in your academic achievement?”), students reported that

parents were

actively engaged in helping them study or complete assignments. Therefore, the

parents had a huge impact to their children.

3. Entrepreneurial Education

The article by Sirelkhatim, Gang (2015) entitled 'Entrepreneurship

Education: A systematic literature review of curricula contents and teaching

methods. Is divided into two parts, about the Entrepreneurship Education (EE) and

Entrepreneurial learning (EL). They describes Entrepreneurship Education (EE) is

one of the fastest growing fields of education globally, yet the areas of “what”

should be taught in these programmes and “how” to teach them have been

mentioned by many researchers as ones that lack both consensus and devoted

attention. Also they said that "Entrepreneurship education (EE)" in many articles

have studied EE provision at the undergraduate level, far fewer have focused on

the postgraduate level, and very few on the MBA and PhD level. Furthermore,

many articles discuss EE programme provision in various disciplines: mostly in

management, business, entrepreneurship or enterprise degrees, many in

engineering degrees, and fewer provided elective courses open to many

disciplines including agriculture, veterinary science, pharmacy, science,

information technology and biomedical diagnostics. In Entrepreneurial

learning (EL). They draw that nowadays, is an increasing interest in the

entrepreneurial learning research field (Harmeling & Sarasvathy, 2013). The focus

on studying entrepreneurs as the starting point for designing EE programmes is

appreciated

as it will contribute to providing learner-centred programmes that better engage

students rather than teacher-centred ones (Jones, 2010). However, while many

studies assert that entrepreneurs are different from non-entrepreneurs, there is no

unified description of how they differ (Lee, Chang, & Lim, 2005). Also, many

researchers refute the question of an entrepreneur as an individual who acts or

learns differently, as Ramoglou (2013, p. 433) states: “as there is nothing to be

learned from dancers beside they dance, there is nothing unique to be found in

individuals who just exercise entrepreneurial action”; hence, entrepreneurs

actually learn similarly to how other adults do.

Related Studies

(Wildman and Torres, 2002) Family and friends are considered to be an

influential part of students’ choice of major. Parents with an agriculture background

most often have an impact in where students go to college. Family role models

have more of an influence on what students major in. Based on Wilson et al.,

(2007) there are several impacting factors found to influence the essential

transitional time between education and career development, namely, gender,

social capital, economic landscape, career decision making, historical

background, trait personality; attitudes and experiences, parental/family role model

and government investment in education and business start-up.

(Zody et al., 2006) stated that students whose parents own and operate

small businesses may want or feel obligated to follow in their parents’ footsteps.

(Betz, 2007)Career decision making is essential to the student for them to know

what path they chose. Career Decision Making self-efficacy a pivotal construction

in understanding individual’s career behaviours.

(Pittaway and Cope, 2007; Smith and Beasly, 2011; Heinrichs and Walter

2013) they concluded that Influences includes gender, social capital, economic

landscape, career-based decision making, historical background, trait personality,

attitudes and experiences, parental/family role model. Kruger et al. (2000)

emphasis entrepreneurial intent and that the act of creating a business being part

of an active decision making process and choice in personal career development.

Theoretical Framework

According to the social learning theory (Bandura 1977) role models

provide opportunities for those around them to learn from their behaviours,

example, guidance nd that individuals gravitate to role models they believe assist

them acwuire new learning of task and skills (Gibson, 2004). Learning by

support, increasing entrepreneurial self-eficacy and inspiration/motivation are

also indentified as importat perceived functions of rol models (Bosma et al,.

2012). Holienka et al. (2013) propose that familiar entrepreneurial role models

have an important part in determining students’ preferences towards

enterpreneurialship and development of entrepreneurs is found to be favourably

linked to availability of parental entrepreneurial rle models.

(Brown & Lent, 2005). They say that the Career Construction theory

concentrates on the implementation of vocational self-concepts. This provides a

subjective, private, and idiographic perspective for understanding. The life theme

and self-concept perspectives of career construction theory complement the

objective perspective by eliciting and interpreting clients’ subjective conceptions

of themselves and their world According to Brown and Lent (2005) Career

Construction seeks to be comprehensive. The essential meaning of career and

the dynamics of its construction are revealed in self-defining stories about the

tasks, transitions, and traumas an individual has faced. Therefore, studying

vocational personality and career adaptability provides understanding for the

dynamics of the open system. Career tells stories of an individual’s dispositional

continuity and psychosocial change. These attitudes, competencies, and

behaviour that individuals used in fitting themselves to work that suits them refers

to the third central component in Career Construction theory. The theory focuses

on neither the person nor the environment in the P-E symbol. However, it does

focus on asserting that building a career is a psychosocial activity that

Research Assumptions

The assumptions that pursued in this study were the following:

1. The participants will answer the interview questions in an honest and

candid manner.

2. The respondents will fully understand the questions they will be asked

3. The participants interviewed were the representative of Antipolo City

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method of research used, the sources of data,

the data gathering instrument, the data gathering procedure and the statistical

treatment of data.

Research Design

This study utilized the case study research design to know the influence and

the involvement of the students’ relatives in terms of choosing their strand at

Antipolo City Senior High School.

According to McLeon (2019), said that case studies are in depth

investigations of a single person group, event or community. And the data typically

are gathered from a variety of sources and by using several different methods like

observations and interviews. Moreover, the information in case study is mainly

relates to the past events of an individual as well as to the significant events that

are currently happening to a person's life. He also stated that the case study is not

itself a research method, but researchers select methods of data collection and

analysis that will generate material suitable for case studies. In addition, according

to Cousin (2005), said that case study objective is to explore and depict a setting

with a view to advancing understanding. This note explores the dimensions of case

study research in higher education, with special reference to geographical

fieldwork. It explores Stake's three categories of case study research: intrinsic,

instrumental and collective. It provides guidelines concerning the limits and

definitions of case study research, the provision of ‘thick descriptions’, the

formulation of good research questions, data collection, analysis and the search

for meaning in case study research findings. Case study research has the capacity

to ‘sophisticate the beholding’ of the settings and activities that are scrutinized.

Setting of the Study

This study will undertake at Antipolo City Senior High School located at

Olalia Road, Barangay Santa Cruz, Anitpolo City. Antipolo City Senior High School

is located in the province of Rizal. This study will mainly focus on ABM students of

Antipolo City Senior High School.

during September of the School Year 2019-2020 having a total number of

participants of twenty students. The samples were chosen using the Non-

Probability sampling technique specifically Purposive Sampling. The Grade 11 and

Grade 12 ABM Students with family members who re working as Business

Practicing Professionals of ACSHS were served as the subject of the study.

The distribution of Grade 11 and Grade 12 ABM students in ACSHS

participants was presented in Table 1

CHAPTER IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter deals with the presentation, analysis and interpretation of

data gathered in this study.

Statement of the Problem Number 1:

How does your closed family member in business practicing professionals

can help to your career decision making?

Rivera and Schaefer (2009) conducted a review of the literature on career

development in schools and present a school-wide career development program

that is integrated into the school curriculum in collaboration with teachers and

begins in the sixth grade. Based on their research, they found out that, as students

engage in career development interventions that are geared toward identifying

their decision-making skills, create an understanding of the consequences of their

decisions, and identify and begin to implement short- and long-term goals. Also

the article acknowledges the role career development plays from a lifespan

development angle. Therefore, by attending the students’ to career development,

school counselors, in collaboration with other school personnel, can facilitate

students’ ability to achieve academically while also attending to their social-

IMPLICATION

It can be concluded that most of the participants’ career decision making is decided

by their family or chosen by their family. The respondents’ parents helped them to

choose what track and strand they are going to take in senior high school.

Statement of the Problem Number 2:

Do you think having a family member in business practicing professions

is an advantage or disadvantage in your study?

A study according to Simmons (2008), he recognized that the concern here is on

the rise over parental involvement in students’ relied on their parents for general

support and as source of advice about academic and career decision. Parallel to

the study of Smith-Adcock, and Villares (2006), they found that by monitoring

homework, social activities, and children’s school performance supported

achievement among students. Students who reported that their parents were

heavily involved stated that their involvement was in direct relation to clubs,

organizations, or activities in which the students had some level of involvement.

For example, when students responded to question two (“Which parent was most

involved in your academic achievement?”), students reported that parents were

actively engaged in helping them study or complete assignments. Therefore, the

parents had a huge impact to their children.

Statement of the Problem Number 3:

Why do you want to pursue a course in college that incline in ABM

The focus

on studying entrepreneurs as the starting point for designing EE programmes is

appreciated as it will contribute to providing learner-centred programmes that

better engage students rather than teacher-centred ones (Jones, 2010). However,

while many studies assert that entrepreneurs are different from non-entrepreneurs,

there is no unified description of how they differ (Lee, Chang, & Lim, 2005). Also,

many researchers refute the question of an entrepreneur as an individual who acts

or learns differently, as Ramoglou (2013, p. 433) states: “as there is nothing to be

learned from dancers beside they dance, there is nothing unique to be found in

individuals who just exercise entrepreneurial action”; hence, entrepreneurs

actually learn similarly to how other adults do.

Here are some of the respondents take from participants during the actual

interview regarding the advantage and disadvantage of family member to their

study.

It was stated from Participants #1 “kasi gusto ko to kahit na nahihirapan.

Acads(Academic) to not like vocational okay lang”.
