Genesis 4-5

1. Ano ang ipinapakita/ipinapahiwatig ng chapter 4?

This chapter reveals to us the consequences (kinahihinatnan/kalalabasan) of sin and the
reality (katotohanan) of death. Over and over in chapters 3 and 4 and 5 we have
confirmed the reality (katunayan) of the curse (sumpa o bunga) which God had
pronounced to Adam even before the first bite was taken of the fruit when he said, "In the
day that you eat of it you shall surely die." Death now is everywhere and we’ll continue
to see that expanding (lumalawak) in the created order (nilikha ng Diyos). But the curses
of God upon Adam's disobedience now come to rest in his own family life. But I want
you to see that even in this poignant (pinakamatinding kwento/punto) story of sin and of
misery (paghihirap), we have a picture of patience (pagtitiyaga/pagtitiis/pagpapasensya).
The patience of God, even with an unrepentant sinner, and we even see inklings
(pahiwatig) of the mercy (awa) of God with an unrepentant sinner. And it is not the last
time that we will see that in Genesis.
2. Ano ang makikita natin sa verse 1 and 2?
We see here the gift of life, right in the shadow of the curses of God because of the sin
and rebellion of Adam and Eve, children are born to the couple. And we see here God's
goodness displayed to Adam and Eve. And we also see an appropriate, believing
acknowledgment of God's goodness and providence by Eve. So we see God's goodness in
the children, and we see Eve respond in a godly manner to the birth of the children. (refer
to verse 1, ano sinabi niya, thinking of genesis 3:15)
3. Ano ang ibigsabihin ng pangalang Cain? Abel?
Cain is similar to a Hebrew word qana which means to get
Abel's name, interestingly in Hebrew, means vanity or a mere breath. And we can see
perhaps in that a hint of the shortness of his own life. Though he was a righteous man, yet
his life was snuffed out in undue time.
Return to the point of acknowledging God, not only is this a natural process
(Read verse 3 to 7) Gaya
away?
Ang katotohanan tungkol sa Panginoon
6. Ano ang makikita pa natin sa 3 to 7?
Ang kanilang pagsamba. Pagsamba bilang pamilya. Family religion is stressed.
Paghahandog = offering
Or Bakit
Abel's offering, two more details are given. Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock and
of their fat portions. There seems to be a hint that there was a costliness in Abel's
sacrifice which spoke of his own faith in the Lord and his devotion to Him. Secondly, in
Cain's response to the Lord in verse 5, we detect the hint of arrogance. And you say,
"Yes, but that's after the Lord had rejected his sacrifice and he was angry." But I say to
you, if the Lord came to you and said, "That sacrifice is unacceptable," and you
responded in anger to the Lord God of heaven and earth, wouldn't that be just a little bit
prideful to think that you know better, that you know justice better than the Lord of the
universe? And so in the passage itself, we see a hint that Abel's sacrifice was one of great
proportion. He gave of the first of his flock. He gave of the back portions of his flock,
and we see an arrogance in Cain. But that's the only hint that we have in this passage.
(Hebrews 11:4)
The division is brought about by Cain's exposure (pagbunyag/paglantad) to the truth of
God in worship. That is what disrupts the peaceful relation between the two seeds. Now
listen to me closely. You remember when we said in Genesis, chapter 3:15, God
promised to establish enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent?
Now here are two brothers who, as far as we know, have been getting along just fine.
What does God do? He establishes enmity between the seed of the woman and the seed
of the serpent. The seed of the serpent suddenly, in recognizing God's rejection of his
sacrifice, hates the seed of the woman and strikes out against him to bruise his heel. So
once again we see God's establishment of enmity between His people and the people of
the world for their own spiritual benefit.
9. Ano ang mapapansin sa 6 at 7?
Notice again in verses 6 and 7 that even after Cain's unworthy sacrifice, the Lord in his
patience and mercy comes entreating the sulking Cain. Here we see God's appeal to Cain
and God's warnings to Cain. "Why are you angry?" the Lord comes to Cain saying. The
Lord, in humility, manifests humility, the Lord God of the universe comes to plead with
Cain who's angry because he thinks the Lord has been unjust with him. (Importance or
gravity of sin and its result)
10. Resulta ng kasalanan?
Pagkamatay ni Abel. Isn't it interesting that the first death in the fallen world was a
murder. The very first death in the fallen world was not a death by old age, it was a
murder. We see here the fruition of God's curse against Adam for his sin. "And the day
that you eat of it, you shall surely die." And not only death, but in this case the murder of
his first born son. What must Adam and Eve have thought standing over the dead body of
their son, Abel? And so we see the consequences of sin. (Sin’s dominance/paghahari)
(serpent to covenant keepers; sin to us) (kaparusahan ng kasalanan kay Cain)
11. Ano an gating matututunan sa 1 to 16?
What do we learn from this? We learn, friends, that repentance is a grace. Cain did not
lack for opportunities. Twice the God of the universe came to Cain and offered him every
opportunity to show contrition and yet there was only hardness of heart. (Hope of the
gospel) Genesis 4, we are reminded because of our complete ruin, that our only hope is to
look away from ourselves and to look to God for redemption. And so even as we learn of
sin and misery in Genesis 4, we are reminded that God is able to redeem us out of that sin
and misery by his own right arm.
a. Sin brings Isolation from God (Ang kasalanan ay nagdadala/nagdudulot ng
pagkahiwalay sa Panginoon) Christ on the cross, He experienced it though need
not to. Not only isolation with God, even with others
b. Sin not separates us from God, but dehumanizes us (19 to 24)
They (Cain’s line) are expert in nomadic activities. They are experts in herding.
They are expert in the musical arts, and they are the founders of metal work. All
of these things the Lord acknowledges were accomplishments of the line of Cain.
Lamech: 1. Polygamist 2. Murderer 3. Boaster 4. Perverse (matigas ulo) (v.24)
(notice lamech’s reaction, his pride, unrepentant)
c. God's covenant mercy is the only bright spot in human history. Seth’s line (v25).
Eve immediately ascribes the birth of Seth to the Lord, she gives him a spiritual
name. He is called Seth, which either means the appointed one or the one who is a
replacement, indicating again the Lord's hand being upon her. She emphasizes
God's providence by naming him Seth, the one who is appointed.. v26 God’s
name is disclosed, name is used in corporate worship
13. Ano ang gating matututunan sa 17 to 26?
We note again that it is not our plan of hope that brings rescue to the wicked world. It is
God's plan which brings hope for redemption in the world. And that's a plan over which
we have no control.
14. Ano ang kadalasan maiisip natin kapag nakita ang ganito (gen 5)?
15. 3 bagay mula sa genesis 5
a. Our fallen human selfimage must comprehend dignity (dangal/karangalan) and
humility (mapagkumbaba/kababaang loob). First of all in verses 1 through 3,
Moses recounts for us the original creation. He reminds us again that God made
man in his image and that teaches us that our fallen, human self-image must
comprehend both dignity and humility. That as we contemplate ourselves as
creatures, as humans made in the image of God but fallen, we must take into
consideration both the dignity with which God has invested us and the appropriate
humility that we ought to have before Him as fallen creatures. Moses begins the
chapter by reiterating the fact that humans are made in the very likeness of God.
V1. And 2 shows headship of adam, both male and female are bearers of God’s
image, both express what God means by human, Complementary. Mentioning of
names? God values His people. Passing on godly living
b. God preserves (pinapangalagaan/pinapanatili) a people for Himself (3 to 32)
Contrast of Seth and Cain. God’s promise (covenant/tipan/kasunduan) of
redemption. Cain’s family accomplishments mean nothing. 21 to 24 Enoch,
Diyos) Lamech One, cursing with his mouth. The other uttering words of
judgment and warning about wickedness. The Cainite Lamech is remembered for
his arrogance in uttering oaths and threats. The Sethite Lamech, the father of
Noah, is remembered for his longing. He longed to see a relief from the curse of
the fall, and so he named his son, Noah, which means rest.
c. No sin will go unpunished.
(He died) We see in verses 5 through 31 the reign of death
as well as one ray of hope and grace. God’s judgement against sin, contrary
(salungat) to what satan says.

We have seen God's glorious work of creation recounted in Genesis 1. We've seen His special
favor toward mankind recounted in Genesis 2. We've come to the saddest moment in human
history in Genesis 3. The doctrinal point of that passage, of course, is to show in the words of the
Apostle Paul that sin came into the world through one man and thus death through sin. And, of
course with sin came misery, not divinity, as Satan had promised. Then when we looked at
Genesis 4 we saw in the first half of that chapter, in verses 1 through 16, the sad story of the
consequences of sin in Adam's family, and especially in the horrible story of the murder of Abel
by his older brother, Cain. That chapter reveals to us the consequences of sin and the reality of
death. And then finally as we looked at the last half of that chapter, Genesis 4:16-26, we saw
again the unfolding of the original, human civilization with all its potential for creativity and for
evil. And so in all the cultural advances and accomplishments recorded there in the line of Cain,
there was not one shred of hope. Only at the very end of Genesis 4, and the birth of the covenant
child, Seth, do we see an offer of hope and of reassurance in the line of the woman. By the way
you will remember, if you can remember back that many weeks, three weeks, that in Genesis
4:26 we saw the spiritual impact of the line of Seth. In that time, men began to call out to the
name of the Lord. This records the gathering for corporate worship of the people of God, and
specifically we noted that that was the first usage of the divine name the Lord, the covenant
name of the Lord God, which we find in scriptures.

So tonight we come to Genesis 5, verses 1 through 32. Here, Moses recounts for us the original
creation, and then he tells us about the effects of sin in the human race and records for us the
godly line all the way from Seth to Noah. So let's hear God's holy word in Genesis 5.
