BENZENE

RING

LOREM IPSUM DOLOR

GROUP 6 | MWF 3:30 – 4:30

WHAT IS A
BENZENE RING?
➢ Its chemical compound is C6H6.

BENZENE
➢ Is the simplest organic, aromatic
hydrocarbon and parent
compound of numerous
important aromatic compounds.
➢ Its structural representation is a

BENZENE
six carbon ring (represented by a
hexagon) which includes three
double bonds. Each of the
carbons represented by a corner
is also bonded to one other
atom. In benzene itself, these
atoms are hydrogens.
➢ It is a colorless liquid and is

BENZENE
primarily used in the production
of polystyrene.
➢ It is highly toxic and is a known
carcinogen; exposure to it may
cause leukemia. As a result,
there are strict controls on
benzene emissions.
BRIEF HISTORY
OF THE BENZENE
RING
DISCOVERY OF BENZENE
The Benzene ring was
discovered by Michael Faraday

1825 in illuminating gas. He first

christened it as “Bicarburet of
hydrogen”.
NAMING OF BENZENE
Eilhard Mitscherlich was the
scientist who named it benzene
in 1833. He had distilled this
compound from gum benzoin.

1833
ISOLATION OF BENZENE
German chemist A.W. von
Hofmann isolated benzene
from coal tar.

1845
FORMATION OF THE
BENZENE RING
German chemists Joseph Loschmidt
(1861) and August Kekule von Stradonitz
(1866) independently proposed a cyclic
arrangement of six carbons with
alternating single and double bonds.

1861
1866
FORMATION OF THE
BENZENE RING
Kekule subsequently modified his
structural formula to one in which
oscillation of the double bonds
gave two equivalent structures in
rapid equilibrium.

1866
FORMATION OF THE
BENZENE RING
American chemist Linus
Pauling suggested that benzene
had a single structure, which was
a resonance hybrid of the two
Kekule structures.
