1 Introduction:

1.1 Background:
The word entrepreneur has Latin roots “entre” means to enter, “pre” means before and “neur”
means nerve center. Entrepreneurs are individuals who enter any business and change that
businesses nerve center (Shefsky, 1994). Another book says that the word entrepreneur
originates from the French and the exact meaning is the one who takes between. An
entrepreneur is known as the coordinator of different factors of production, the risk taker, the
capitalist employer, the owner- manager etc. Many writers have contributed towards the roles
and concepts of an entrepreneur. Richard Cantillon and Jean Baptiste Say are considered as the
most important economist writers to have contributed on the role of an entrepreneur. Other
famous writers to observe the role of entrepreneurs are Kirzner, Schumpeter, Knight, Casson
and Shackle. This is how the approach to entrepreneurship was developed. The entrepreneurial
personality consists of the key characteristics like need for achievement, high internal locus of
control, visionary, innovative etc. However, the personality criticisms observed are the
ignorance of the learning, preparation, serendipity and environment factors that may be more
important than a personality. Entrepreneurship is hugely influenced by the environment in
which a person is developed and the culture of an individual (Deakins and Freel, 2006).

About entrepreneur Mr. Moulood Ahmad Sahid:

Moulood Ahmed Shahid with his analytical approach to finding solutions was soon recognized
as young rising innovative engineer at the Packages plant in Lahore Pakistan.Mr. Shahid left
Packages to form his own company so his creativity and innovative ideas would deliver
solutions to design engineering and the end users. That idea was the reason for birth of the
Metal Forming’s Group of Companies. Like many trendsetter, it had its humble beginning. Mr.
Shahid’s focus in design and innovations earned MFL a prestigious name in stainless steel
material handling vertical. He has created engineering solutions for Multinational companies
which are yet unsurpassed in Pakistan. He has been recognized by the clients, among world
class design engineers. His leadership abilities have brought MFL Group synonyms to
international standards in discrete and process manufacturing.

Start up:
Mr. Moulood Ahmad Shahid started his career by, working in companies like packages and
nestle and after spending some time in these companies he and his friends took an engineering
task back to his house, working in a small room trying to solve a textile machine glitch, but
they failed their first project. From that moment Mr. Shahid decided that they will work hard
and try to focus on quality rather than cost, with the passage of time his work started to get
attention he rented a work place in shalamarbagh, where along with his friends he worked
rigorously day and night, and caught the eye of a company known as Fuaji metals limited, who
were making 50 cylinder vessels per day, due to increase in demand they were outsourcing,
they reached Mr. Shahid for help and from there, his business expanded in large scale, that in
one day his team manufactured 2250 cylinders, and they were all according to American DOT
standards. After seeing the growth of his work, he and his friends decided to create their own

2
company. They purchased a property of 12-14 kanal on Ferozepur road which became his
company’s first big manufacturing plant.

His Philosophy:
"‫"اپنے رکھ مجھے رے رو‬

solution.
Honesty is not good or better but the best policy.

rooms, kitchen and all the required paraphernalia from the house. After the business expanded
to:

 Facilities(Design office, fabrication shop, press shop, machine shop)
 Equipment (metal welders, cutter, pressers etc.)
 Finance(Bank financed)

Risks:
He always bore monetary risk over quality, even when there was no work available, his
engineers, managers, accountants, foreman, got paid just to not to loose his skilled workers,
which might compromise quality. Sometimes profit margin of the products was decreased just
to keep the quality high.

Started a new venture:

Mr. Shahid saw an opportunity to provide three services to his clients under one umbrella by
creating a group business. He joined three companies Metal Formings (Pvt) Ltd., WattnVolt

chassis which makes the outfit unstable due to high center of gravity. It causes rollovers
particularly on road turns and uneven road berms.

1.2 Aim:
Aim of this study is to find out reasons behind the success of an entrepreneur and how he/she
overcome his/her failures.

Objectives:
The objective of this research is to study the career of Mr. Moulood Ahmad Shahid as a
successful engineer, entrepreneur and a businessman by understanding:
 His philosophy towards quality control.
 His will to bear risk for quality.
 His innovations in mechanical engineering.
 His role as an entrepreneur.

7
2 Literature view:
Haque, Nadeem. (2007) studied that Entrepreneurship is viewed by economists to be a
combination of innovation and risk taking. When such activity thrives, high growth rates are
achieved as well as opportunities offered to all segments of society, including the poor. The
latter benefit form growth and employment as well as through opportunities for
entrepreneurship. In Pakistan innovation and risk taking is severely inhibited by the intrusive
role of government in the marketplace. From the early days of planning when protection and
subsidy policies determined winners in the market place, entrepreneurship has been diverted to
seeking government favors. Government economic policy also seeks to promote growth
through a basically ‘mercantilist’ approach where domestic commerce through seriously
neglect is heavily regulated. This sector either employs most of the poor or offers them
entrepreneurial opportunities. Hence deregulating this sector could be a priority in and anti-
poor strategy. The paper also argues that land distribution and city zoning and management
have also evolved to further reinforce the prevalent rent seeking path to success. The result is
that cities are by design not allowed to become clusters of commerce that will be entrepreneur
friendly. These clusters of dense urban commerce are magnets of employment and opportunity
for the poor. To develop an entrepreneurship culture in the country, the system of incentives
(laws and policies) that promote rent seeking will have to be dismantled. This paper presents
an analysis of the state of entrepreneurship/rent seeking prevailing in Pakistan. This analysis
allows us to obtain and understanding of the kinds of reforms (including legislative changes)
that are required to develop entrepreneurship.

3 Methodology:
This case study uses qualitative research to Analyze the primary data collected from interview
and internet. Analysis is based on studying key features which are responsible for the success
of an entrepreneur.

4 Analysis:
Key reasons behind the success of Mr. Moulood Ahmad Shahid:
1. Innovations.
2. Leadership.
3. Providing quality products and services.
4. Bearing risk for quality and customer service.
5. Rewarding deserving and worthy workers.
6. Understanding problems of the clients and providing them best solutions.
7. Utilized his talent and knowledge.
8. Found new opportunities and ventures.
9. Created unique and complex designs in metal forming’s and fabrications.

8
5 Results and Discussion:
Haque, Nadeem. (2007), article says that entrepreneurial roles like innovation and risks deliver
high growth rates for society which is similar to the result of this study in which Mr. Shahid’s
entrepreneurial role expanded the small enterprise to a limited company creating new
opportunities, jobs, and resources for society. His vision to provide best quality product and
service lead him to innovate and take risk, which resulted in creating new opportunities, for his
company. Working on different projects required land, labor, capital, and management which
created job opportunities and helped in the growth of economy.

6 Conclusion:
Entrepreneurship is a famous building block of economy. It is a technique to create
employment that could pay back to self-growth which ultimately leads to economic growth. It
is smartly contracting with various economic and social barriers around the globe. It requires
talent, skills, motivation, will power, commitment, and hard work etc. and people of Pakistan
have the potential to utilize all of these characteristics to deliver results and take part in the
growth of the economy. We need more people like Mr. Sahid who are compassionate about
their work and are willing to take risk, who innovate and create new opportunities for
themselves and for others.
