THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING
MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE
FOR YOUR CAREER PATH by Owen Roberts
MOST SCHOOLS are very careful in the alternative subject choice packages that they offer. In Grade 9, very few
Learners really know what career path they would like to follow. Keep your options open.
Over 100 careers are closed to you if you choose Maths Literacy and not Mathematics!
All Engineering, Commerce (Accounting), Actuarial Science, Surveying, Aeronautics and Medical
degrees/diplomas require Mathematics. Most Technical degrees, diplomas need Mathematics.
• Mathematics, is a subject which involves abstract problem solving and reasoning. It prepares specifically for all
the scientific fields mentioned above.
• The aim of Mathematical Literacy is to develop mathematical skills in everyday situations - but eliminates you
from choosing any of the vital career paths listed above.
The danger lies in Learners choosing the softer option as they feel they can score better in Maths Literacy. They
do- but in the process- they are destroying career opportunities.
There are those who opt for Mathematics and find it more difficult than expected. They then change to
Mathematics Literacy with dire career choice consequences. Sadly, some schools and teachers encourage this
as their results will look better overall.
Remember 40% in Mathematics is better than a distinction in Maths Literacy as far as career choice is concerned.
By passing Mathematics, a student immediately becomes part of the 5% of matriculants who will be guaranteed
acceptance for further study and employment and a greater chances of getting a bursary.

Look at the mark allocation for each question remember you have a time limit. Don't rush, or you'll start to panic,
but don't spend too much time thinking about an answer, especially in the beginning. Get the answers you know

Then the rest of the time you can use to work at the more difficult questions.
Make sure you number each question correctly, especially if you answer them in a different order. Rule off when
you finish the answer to a question. The examiners need to be able to identify the beginning and end of an answer
easily - they have to mark a lot of papers.
Don't write in pencil first, thinking you will have time to write out everything again neatly. Write in pen! You don't
have the time to write the paper twice.
Never cross out anything unless you have redone (and are happy with} a new solution to a question. You might
have been on the right track, so leave unfinished solutions, because work which has been crossed out won't be
marked.
Only leave one solution to each question - this is vital for questions where you do correct your first try - the
examiners will mark the first solution if there is more than one answer.
Remember if you've worked hard, you will be able to do it under exam conditions. Calmness is the key. Take slow
breaths and get writing, favourite questions first.

WATER IS THE LIFE-BLOOD OF EVERY NATION· WITHOUT IT
THERE WOULD BE NO LIFE ON EARTH
ii- ■•::.ec:t .. r.;::.-
South Africa is fortunate to have a large water 'factory', the uKhahlamba (Drakensberg) Mountain Range and 75% of all our water is from the
Orange-Senqu river basin which is fed from this range.
South Africa is a water-stressed country. Each one of us has a responsibility to help protect our country's water resources by using this
precious resource more wisely and reducing our water footprint.
Here are some tips to help protect our water resources every day:
Do not pollute our rivers and water sources by discarding plastic, chemicals, sewerage into them.
Tell your family and friends how they too can help keep our water safe and clean.
An average bath uses 160 litres of water while a five-minute shower typically uses only 60 litres. So shower rather than bath. Also
replace shower heads with low pressure water saving shower alternatives.
Fix or report water leaks in your home or neighbourhood. A dripping tap can waste between 30-60 litres of water each day.
Harvest your rain water. Linking water tanks to the gutter system helps gain extra water. Then lobby officials and politicians to make
rainwater tanks available to everyone.
Identify where the wetlands are in your area. Learn more about what threatens them and try to get people interested to help conserve
them.
Help eradicate alien invasive plants that threaten our water resources and replace water hungry lawns with indigenous hardy ground
covers
Water your garden in the early morning to prevent too much evaporation and conserve water.
Place a volume displacement brick into your toilet cisterns and if possible, fit dual flush systems.
Join WESSA (the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa) and help support our many water conservation projects around the
country!
Dear Sir,
I read your advertisement which appeared in "Careers Unlimited for Learners" and am writing to you as I am very
interested in applying for the job which you offered in your IT Department.

As a frequent visitor to your company, I am always impressed with the level of service which you provide to your clients
and would enjoy working in an environment which promotes your wonderful products.
As you will see from my attached CV, I have taken part in various school and community events that have allowed me
to develop strong communication and team-work skills.
I do hope that you will consider my application favourably and would be pleased if I could arrange an appointment for
an interview with your Human Resources Manager.

A CAREER IN
SPRAY-PAINTING
AND
PANEL-BEATING
By Marius Nel, BASF National Head Trainer
These trades will not only guarantee you a lifelong career, but you will become a vital economic
resource. Honing your skills in an automotive trade provides endless opportunities for career
development - and great earning potential!
Automotive artisanal careers are arguably the equivalent to other professional careers and possibly even
more complicated, and they pay just as well. Directly and indirectly, vehicles have a huge impact on the
South African economy and it is imperative that vehicles are maintained and remain operational to service this
country's vast and variable personal and industrial needs. It is therefore essential to develop competent, qualified
personnel who can occupy technical automotive careers and attend to the maintenance, management and possibly
development of automobiles.
Given the advance of technology and a richly varied automotive industry that offers an array of positions and career
paths, the future is bright for talented young people with maths, science, communications and technical skills.
Moreover, job growth looks strong for the foreseeable future as automotive careers constantly make up the top 50
most scarce and critical skills list in the world, thus increasing employability of artisans on a global scale.
Generally required are artisans who can specialise in anything from being a motor or diesel mechanic, motorcycle
and scooter mechanic, automotive electrician, automotive engine fitter, automotive machinist, automotive trimmer,
panel beater and vehicle painter, and progressively become technologists, engineers, supervisors, managers,
educators, dealer principals, parts managers, sales executives or examiners of vehicles, to name but a few, and finally
industry entrepreneurs who own businesses.

So wouldn't it be great for young South Africans to aspire for a career in the sector that is such a blessing for our country? Where do I start?
What do I need for a career sea? The answers to these questions are outlined below in a way that will interest you.
The SOUTH AFRICAN MARITIME SAFETY AUTHORITY (SAMSA) is responsible for protection of life and property at sea, combating pollution of
the marine environment by ships at sea, as well as promoting South Africa's global maritime interests.
Together with its partners in the maritime industry, SAMSA facilitates the governance and development of maritime professions. In
the process, the organisation further promotes the maritime sector and the careers that are found within. The campaigns usually cover
a whole range of valuable opportunities in the industry that is global by nature. This industry offers careers that have nationally and
internationally recognised tertiary qualifications, job satisfaction and high level of responsibility, good advancement prospects and a
variety of careers both at sea and ashore. Furthermore, a career in maritime also offers great remuneration, stimulating adventure,
satisfying professional life and incomparable fun.
The Maritime Sector also offers many other careers, for example:
I. Shipping and transport, which is broken down into maritime logistics
infrastructure, shipping transport and ports, marine services and coastal
administration;
2. Marine resources, which is broken down into fisheries, pharmaceuticals
and aquaculture; and off-shore energy and mining; and
3. Marine tourism, which is broken down into boating and cruising,
sports and recreation and leisure. The four secondary industry clusters
include (a) operational support services, e.g. shipping logistics and marine
technologies); (b) manufacturing and construction e.g. marine and civil
engineering; (c) business services, which look at maritime specialised
professionals within the banking and consulting domain; and (d) the public interest cluster, which considers public maritime functions
