PROBLEM SET #3

Name:____________________________________________Rating: ________________
Year & Section: ________________________________ Date: _____________________

1. A cantilever beam having a span of 4.0 m carries a uniformly distributed load

throughout its span. The beam is A36 steel with yield strength F y = 248 MPa. The
beam is not restrained against lateral buckling. The beam is a W21 x 62 steel
shape, whose relevant properties for this problem are:
Properties of W21 x 62
d =0.533 m bf = 0.210 m
t f= 0.016 m S x = 0.002077 m 3
r t = 0.053m

a. Compute the allowable flexural stress of the beam.

b. Compute the moment capacity at the support.
2. For the W250 x 167, A36 steel beam of the following properties. Find the allowable bending
stress if the unsupported length is (a) 3m, b) 6m and c) 18 m.

W = 167.4 Axis x - x Axis y - y

A = 21300 mm 2 I = 300(10) 3mm 3 I = 98.8 (10) 6mm 3
d = 289 mm s = 2080(10) 3mm 3 s = 746(10) 3mm 3
bf = 265 mm r= 119 mm r = 68.1 mm
t f = 31.8
t w = 19.2 mm
3. Truss shown below is 4.5 mm O.C. with roofing loads are as follows:
Snow = 20 psf (960 Pa)
Roofing = 6 psf (288 Pa)
Wind pressure = 10 psf (480 Pa) perpendicular to roof surface

Use AISC ASTM A36 steel and Fb= 0.6Fy

a) Design the purlins using W-shape without sag-rods
b) Re-design the purlins using [ - shape with sag-rods @ midpoint.

Choose only from the following sections:

C- 250X37 ; C- 20X45 ; C- 250X45 ; C- 250X40
4. A simply support ed I -section beam is built-out of welded plat es,
300mmx12mm as flanges and 500mmx9mm as web. The beam has a span of 5
meters and is used to carry a concentrated load P at midspan. The load is 20%
dead load and 80% liveload. The steel plates used are A36 steel. Determine the
maximum service load P that can be permitted to be carried.
5. A W 8x21 beam of A36 steel is used as a roof purlin on a simple span of 4.6 m.
The roof slope is 1:3. The beam carries a uniformly distributed load of 7,200 N/m
that passes through the centroid of the section. Assuming that the purlin has full
lateral support provided by roofing above, check the adequacy of the section.

Properties of W 8x21 relevant to the problem:

Sx = 298,069 mm 3

Sy = 60,747 mm3
Beam weight, wb = 31.3 kg/m = 307 N/m
