Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

One of the issues in our society today, is the acceptance of

LGBT Community. LGBT Community, is a loosely defined grouping of

lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. These communities generally

celebrate pride, diversity, individuality and sexuality. Most people can

often feel pressured to fit in with society conventional ideas of being male

or female. Even though there is an increasing acceptance of LGBT in

society and greater visibility in the media and public life, many LGBT

people still experience discrimination, harassment and violence at work,

school and social situation.

Moreover, this study will change the perception of the community

people, and also to give better understanding on LGBT Community. And

be aware that everyone has their own capacities and freedom as a

human being. Additionally, everyone has an equal rights in this world.

Then, this study will also help the community people to learn respect and

accept the LGBT Community in our society today.

1

Additionally, Although LGBT people share with the rest of society.

The full range of health risks, they also face a profound and poorly

understood set of additional health risk due largely to social stigma. The

main ways that all of these issues could be addressed would be just

simple acceptance of the LGBT community within our own society. Like

an article made by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner

states, deeply-embedded homophobic and transphobic attitudes, often

combined with a lack of adequate legal protection against discrimination

an grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity, expose many

lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people of all ages and in

all regions of the hard egregious violations of their human rights. "Which

means that not only legal protection could be the best weapon about

these really important LGBT issues, but also the attitudes of people that

have contact and sometimes even power with LGBT people.

The LGBT community remains as one of the country's minority

sectors today. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people often face

disadvantages in getting hired for jobs, acquiring rights for civil marriage,

and even in starting up personal business. Most non-heterosexuals also

have a higher rate of suicide and suicide ideation compared to non-

homosexuals. According to an international research, 10% of the world's

1

population are the theoretically part of the LGBT community, out or not,

including12 million Filipinos that may experience discrimination based on

who they are. This has led to the rise of the cause for LGBT rights,

defined as the right to equality and non-discrimination. As a remember of

the united nations, the Philippines is signatory to various international

covenants promoting human rights.

In addition, LGBT youth with highly accepting families have

significantly higher levels of self-esteem and social support in young

adulthood. Despite all the attention and disparities for lesbian, gay and

bisexual youth, prior to this study, little was known about how families

express acceptance and support for their LGBT children. "At a time when

the media and families are becoming acutely aware of the risk that many

LGBT youth experience, our findings that family acceptance protects

against and behaviors, depression and offer a gateway to hope for LGBT

youth and families that struggle with how to balance deeply held religious

and personal values with love for their LGBT.

The main purpose of this study is to help the community people

to be aware of the level of acceptance of LGBT Community in the

society today. And also To the parents, that they will be aware of the
1

condition of their children, as the findings were presented to them, they

will be encouraged to improve their views and beliefs regarding

homosexuality. this study will also agree on the Acceptability Level of

lesbians, gays ,bisexuals and transgender to the society. Additionally, this

study will aim addressed the awareness of the significance of LGBT in

the community. And hearing the voices of the people in the community.

This study will be conducted this second semester of the year

2017-2018. Since helping people to solve their problems is part of the

Social Work Profession, the researchers do believe that it is their task to

help people to move on from the standpoint of community people on

LGBT Community. And they also believe that it is their responsibility to

change the perception of the community people to explain that every

person has an equal rights and capacities to develop his full potential as

a human being.

Theoretical Framework

In this study, the researchers will anchor these theories that will

support the idea of instances on tolerance level of gays on societal

discrimination. These theories are: Theory of Tolerance cited Comeo

1

(2007),Conflict Perspectives Theory cited Schacht (2015), and Queer

Theory by Renn (2010).

Notably ,Theory of Tolerance cited Comeo (2007) is often viewed as

a dinstinctive feature of modern western societies, one that clearly

differentiates them from traditional ones. Whereas" traditional man"

surrenders to social norms and heavily sanctions those who deviate,

"modern man" accepts social alterity without raising his eyebrows.

Tolerance is typically welcome because it promotes peaceful coexistence

between diverse groups and favors individual self-actualization.

Conversely, intolerance hinders the manifestation of proclivities and

talents and demands a heavy toll on those who dare to be different .

Minorities enjoy a substantial degree of protection only in tolerant

societies, and that protection strengthens democratic political rights.

While tolerance might be desirable in principle, not all contemporary

societies can be qualified as tolerant.

Linking to the current study, the study will investigate the

acceptability level of LGBT Community in the society. The theory best

explains the gay's idealization of being tolerant to socialization. A person

is tolerant if she attaches symbolic value not only to her own

1

characteristics but also to those that she does not have but others have.

Conversely, an intolerant person has an unbalanced value system that

makes her at the same time complacent and disrespectful of traits and

lifestyles that are not her own. The level of tolerance from a sociological

perspective is a scope of behaviors that are considered acceptable.

In like manner, the conflict perspective theory Schacht (2015)

frames the gay rights, movement and the opposition to it as a struggle

over power, prestige, and economic resources. Homosexuals fight for

recognition and their rights to marriage. protection against discrimination,

and more .Their fight has evolved society. Due to the gay rights,

movement and homosexuals fighting for their rights, businesses and

corporations support nondiscrimination policies because it: helps maintain

a competitive edge in recruiting, maintains a productive workforce, and

more LGBT individuals by from places that protect LGBT employees.

Some business leaders, for example those in Australia have banned

together to advocate for some sex marriage. However, not all businesses

and their leaders support homosexuality; some oppose it. For businesses

there are religious freedom laws that allow business to refuse to serve

LGBT individuals if they if they are religiously opposed to homosexuality.

1

Similarly, the conflict theory helps explain the experiences and

feelings of the gays, towards social discrimination. Social discrimination in

the society creates conflict. Hence, gays struggle to their rights

movement and opposition. The many negative meanings and views of

homosexuality are reinforced based on people's reactions when

homosexuality is talked about and through negative language, such as

"That's so gay" or "You're so gay" which is used as a way to say that

something is stupid. Heterosexuals who use the words tag and queer are

accepted by their peers who are opposed to homosexuality, which hurts

homosexuals and reinforces negative views of homosexuals.

Another theory, queer theory is a set of ideas based around the

idea that identities are not fixed and do not determine who we are. It

suggests that it is meaningless to talk in general about 'women' or any

other group, as identities consists of so many elements that so assume

that people can be seen collectively on the basis of one shared

characteristic is wrong. Indeed, it proposes that we deliberately challenge

all notions of fixed identity, in varied and non-predictable ways

( Renn,2010).
1

In relation, queer theory has something to say to lesbian and gay

sixties on LGBT.As of the current study,LGBT debunks the stable(and

correlated) saves, genders, and sexualities develops out of the

specifically lesbian and gay reworking of the post-structuralist figuring of

identity as a constellation of multiple and not stable male nor female in

the community rather are called lesbians, gay, bisexual or transgender.

Hence, gays as the main subject of the research are seen not stable male

nor female in the community based on queer theory.

Conceptual Framework

In understanding the level of acceptance of LGBT in the

community, multiple frameworks can be used to examine how multiple

identities and structural arrangements intersect to influence health care

access, acceptance, and counseling program. Additionally, This

interrelationship among experiences starts before birth and in fact, before

conception. The minority stress model attributes the higher prevalence of

anxiety, depression, and found among LGBT as compared with

heterosexual populations to the additive stress resulting from

nonconformity with prevailing sexual orientation and gender norms.

The Figure A as the schematic diagram shows the illustrations of

the interplay of the independent and dependent variables, and the

output of the study. First, the independent variables shows the cause,

learning on the subjects in Acceptability Level of LGBT in the Society.

Further, this may be significantly related to the Acceptability Level of

LGBT in the Society. This study will also investigate the correlation

between the level of acceptance of LGBT in the community on levels.

Finally, the output of the study will be the program development plan.

Researchers will come up with the concept that acceptability level

of LGBT can affect the results depending on the approach to be

integrated in the society.

Lastly, the output will center to the implications based on the

results of the study. The variables which are in the boxes signify distinct

features from each other and the presence of the arrows in different

directions indicate the flow of the study.

Statement of the Problem

This study will aim to determine the Levels of acceptance of

lesbian, gays, bisexual, and transgender at kolambugan lanao del

norte. Specifically, this study sought to answer the following

questions:

1. What is the economic profile of the respondents in terms of?

 Age

 Gender

 Educational attainment

 Address

2. What is the level of acceptability on in the society today?

3. What are the challenges faced by LGBT on the acceptance of

the Society?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the Demographic

profile And the level of acceptability?

5. Is there a significant relationship between the LGBT acceptance

in the society and the level of acceptability?

1

6. Is there a significant relationship between the LGBT acceptance

in the society and the demographic profile?

7. What acceptance program can be designed based on the results

of the study?

Hypotheses

The following hypothesis in null forms will be formulated and to

be tested empirically at 0.05 level of significance.

H01: There is no significance difference between the demographic

profile and the level of acceptability.

H02: There is no significant difference between the LGBT

acceptance in the society and the level of acceptability..

H03: There is no significant relationship between the LBGT

acceptance in the society and the demographic profile.

1

Scope and Limitations

This study will focus on the acceptability level of LBGT community

in the society. It will also focus on the contribution of LGBT and as well its

advantages and disadvantages

The study will be conducted at Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte. The

respondents of the study were the LGBT which will be engaged and

participate on the topics provided on each questions that will basically

consume one hour for every topic. The time frame of the study will be

during the second semester of the S.Y.2017- 2018.

Significance
The study has significance to gays and lesbians, as they will be

aware of the level of acceptance of the society to them and the factors

that contribute to the willingness of the society towards them. To the

parents, that they will be aware of the condition of their children, as the

findings were presented to them, they will be encouraged to improve their

views and beliefs regarding homosexuality.

Additionally, To the society, that they will be aware of the

happenings to the homosexual based on their opinions, beliefs, and

views, as they give it in relation to their acceptance and may find ways to

improve the level of acceptance between gays and lesbians. The LGBT
1

community has adopted certain symbols for self-identification to

demonstrate unity, pride, shared values, and allegiance to one another.

LGBT symbols communicate ideas, concepts, and identity both within

their communities and to mainstream culture. Learning about LGBT has

an important in every field of social sciences.

DSWD. The study promotes rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals

and transgender, including those that belong to intersex and queer

communities. And have passed anti- discrimination ordinances, there is

much to be done to stop the discrimination of LGBT members and

increase the level of tolerance, understanding and acceptance for these

individuals. that educating the Filipino society on LGBT rights.

Masterand. The findings can provide them an information about

the LGBT to the society covers the trend of this generation. Through this

study, the learners were able to recognize the value of LGBT in the

society. This help the learners to gain more information on this study.
Parents. This study can provide understanding of the parents

about the lesbians, gays ,bisexual and transgender. On the acceptance

between the child and the parents relationship, their attitude , behaviour,

mannerism of a child. And how the parents deal with that kind of

situation.
LGBT Community. The purpose of the study is to understand

the LGBT communities, and assess implications for LGBT health, well-
1

being and protection against abuse and discrimination . To the lesbians,

gays, bisexual and transgender. To increase the awareness of them to

participate actively in the community and to socialize to the people

without discrimination.

communication and socialization with other people through the

understanding of LGBT in the community. In addition, this study can serve

as a good key of achieving interconnectedness from different people in a

community.
Future Researchers. This study can serve as a guide and

reference for the other researchers who would be interested in studying

as base line information in the conduct of future similar study.

Definition of Terms

To understand the study more, the following terms are defined

conceptually and/or operationally based on how they are used in the

study:
1

LGBT. ”The acronym LGBT stands for “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and

Transgender”. Lesbian is used to describe a woman whose enduring

physical, romantic, and/or emotional attraction is to other women. Gay is

bisexual experience these feelings for people of both sexes, and people

who are asexual experience no sexual attraction at all.

social category, in a way that is worse than the way people are usually

treated.
