On the 37th Commencement
Exercises of UP Visayas on
June 24, 2016, Juliene Lindy
C. Tiu will have the distinction
of delivering the valedictory
address to the graduating Class
of 2016. This because Tiu, a BS
Accountancy major from the
College of Management, has
earned the highest GWA of 1.282
among her peers.
Tiu graduated class
valedictorian in elementary and
in high school at the Iloilo Central
Commercial High School, now
Huasiong College of Iloilo. Her
being a consistent university
scholar brought her to graduate
as magna cum laude at the end
of the five-year accountancy
program that she enrolled in.
The consistent university
scholar found time to join and
win in competitions that were
particularly related to her field.

“Besides honing my analytical
skills, UP has taught me to be
flexible, personality-wise. It has
prepared me for life by keeping
me grounded. In the four years that
I have been a student, I realized
that you cannot know everything
and that’s okay. One must learn to
deal with one’s limitation. What’s
important is the realization that
since there is so much to learn out
there, you just have to be always
open to new ideas; and to never
confine yourself to just one type of
learning.”

Admission Test, Abucay was
ranked among the top 10% of
all UPCAT qualifiers.Because
of this, he was a recipient of a
UP Government Scholarship and
also qualified for a DOST- RA
Scholarship based on competitive
examination.

thinks that he did not have a lot
of extra-curricular activities, he
was actively involved with the

day. In short, I learned that
finding a place in the den of great
minds that is UP was a daunting
challenge, indeed,” she noted.
She recalled that failing to
score the highest grade in Math
11, her favorite subject, was the
UPV Mathematics Circle, the
UP Kadugong Bol-anon Iloilo
Chapter, and supported the various
activities of the Elektrons, the
academic organization where he
belongs. He also served as a peer
tutorat the UPV Teaching and
Learning Center and worked as
a Student Assistant at the CAS
Office of the College Secretary.
“In UP, we are taught to be critical
thinkers. While it is good to be one,
my years in college has also made
me realize that life is still better when
things are kept simple. Sometimes
a blue house is just painted blue
and that does not necessarily mean
gloom. Sometimes the two- liner
math solutions get higher merit than
the two-page ones. It always pays
to know when to think critically
and when to see things as they are.
Always strive to strike the balance,”
he observed.

Balance. Through these UP has
changed me,” said one who is

a philosophy that she said carried
her throughout her stay in UP and
beyond.
“Don’t compare yourself
with others.” It may be
straightforward, but it’s easier
said than done, especially in a
degree program like Accountancy
where the retention system
forces us to be perpetually grade-
conscious. So, in order to spare
myself the unnecessary grief, I
stopped measuring myself against
others and instead focused
inward to simply be the best
version of myself that I could be.
This perspective allowed me to
practice humility in the face of
my achievements and to sincerely
applaud the triumphs of others,”
she said of this self-realization.
She said that she was grateful
for the guidance of her supportive
family, nurturing mentors, and
peers because she was truly able
to enjoy her UP life despite the
initial culture shock.
“From entering UP until now, I
honestly did not expect to obtain
the honor of becoming the class
valedictorian, simply because I
was aware of the sheer number
of achievers among us. But
somehow, God’s grace granted
me this achievement, and with
the knowledge and opportunities
the university has given me, I
hope to contribute to society as
someone who above all, uses
education not as a pedestal to
look down upon others, but as the
catalyst for positive change,” she

The story of UP students
coming from a life of poverty and
making something of themselves
is a narrative that continues to
inspire and awe. One never gets
tired of being told about it.
Such is the story of Jia P.
Marcellano, a BS Biology
graduate who is graduating at
the top of Class 2016 of the UPV
Tacloban College, magna cum
laude with a GWA of 1.392.
Marcellano was born to a
humble family whose father is a

Fuertes leads CFOS graduates

Humble beginnings did not deter
Vince Neil B. Fuertes, the younger
of the two children of Herculino
M. Fuertes and Aileen Hazel B.
Fuertes, to achieve academic
excellence.The native of Dipatlong,
Maribojoc, Bohol said he and an
older sister were raised by their
parents accustomed to simple
living.
As a Bachelor of Science
in Fisheries graduate,with a
GWA of 1.447, Fuertes ends his
undergraduate life in UP as magna
cum laude and leads the College of
Fisheries and Ocean Sciences 2016
graduates.
“Back then and until now, we
never had much. My mother is a
public school teacher while my
father is the assistant head of the
DRRM of the Maribojoc LGU,” he
said. He credits his mother as the
one who made sure that they would
value education. It was no surprise
then that he and her older sister were
consistently at the top of their class
during their elementary years and
both graduated as valedictorians
in Santa Cruz Elementary School.
He also graduated with honors (1st)
in Tagbilaran City Science High
School.
Fuertes added that at a young
age, he already had an inclination
towards the sciences, spending
hours reading science books,
watching science shows and
enjoying science subjects. He
competed and won in science
competitions in elementary and
high school.
“I had high hopes upon entering
UP because it is not just a university
but a learning institution where the
best of the best are found. Fisheries
was not my first choice as degree
program because I really wanted
to be a Chemical Engineer like
my sister. But my father suggested
that I take fisheries because UPV
is known to be the Center of
Excellence in fisheries education,”
he pointed out.
He said that despite having a
hard time adjusting to the “UP
way of life” and even attempted to
shift, he now thinks that majoring
in fisheries was really his destiny
after qualifying for the Fisheries
Scholarship Program (FSP) for
Industry Leaders under the Bureau
of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
