2019-10-17 Under the Water Sustainability Act
Section 11, Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society intends
to perform habitat enhancement in the Salmo River down-
stream of the Village of Ymir (file number 4007612). There are
two intended Fish Habitat Enhancement Projects:
1) Quartz – Oscar Creek Restoration
Uses three types of enhancement structures: lateral log Buy ANY Rogue® and Receive a
structures, boulder clusters, and 2 triangular structures.
Beginning 30m downstream of Quartz Creek and concluding FREE Rogue® Universal Rotisserie Kit
50m upstream of Oscar Creek, extending a total of
approximately 300m.
2) Burgess Side Channel Restoration
Reopening a 150m historical side channel and performing
bank stabilization. Bank stabilization beginning
approximately 30m downstream of the outlet of the side
channel. To protect the bank from eroding into the rail
trail and provide additional complexing to fish habitat,
bank stabilization will consist of riprap in conjunction with
triangular fish enhancement structures. An upstream debris
catcher will also perform fish habitat complexing and slow
the erosive capacity of spring run-off waters.

and promotes this annual spring celebration on behalf
of the Village of Kaslo and the town’s businesses and
organizations.
Expectation: That the successful candidate will co-
ordinate the May Days 2020 by applying the best practices
as are outlined in the ‘How To May Days’ manual, supplied

Karen Margaret Behn-McConnell

Marching through a heroic twenty- Karen founded the marvelous Kuimba

Karen Margaret Behn-McConnell said
“Goodnight” to us on Sept 20, 2019, and
the world got a little poorer without her
infectious laughter, quirky wit and loving,
celebratory spirit.
Born, December 23, 1959, in
Vancouver, BC, Karen grew up in
Chase, BC, with brother Jeremy and
parents Roger and Marion Behn.
After receiving a Music Education
Degree from UBC and Jazz Diploma
from Capilano College, Karen taught in
Abbotsford, then Merritt, while raising
two children, Brock and Gillian, with
her husband John before settling in
Kaslo ten years ago.
one year cancer journey, Karen’s
remarkable courage, love of Life, and
ardent belief that she could be well,
fought back the vicious disease, defy-
ing its will to take her life more than
once! She never lost sight of the bliss
to be discovered in living – a powerful
gift-by-example she left us.
Karen was a born nurturer, a truly
kind soul, opening fully and trusting
easily, happy to give whatever she had
– her time, money, ear, a place to stay,
or just a comforting cup of tea – when
she saw a need!
Karen was a devoted daughter, sister,
wife, mother, grandmother, and dar-
ling friend! Talented and passionate,
she was a singer, musician, performer,
choral leader, writer, master teacher,
quilter, crafter, killer Scrabbler, impas-
sioned three-season Kootenay Lake
swimmer, hiker, kayaker, adventurer,
pilgrim, world traveller, Vipassana med-
itator, cancer advocate, addicted reader,
foodie, cake baker, shopper extraordi-
naire, talker, nudist, novelist, dog lover
and dreamer!
Forever inquisitive, Karen was an intel-
lect, keen to learn, create, and contribute
these fruits to her community of Kaslo.
While battling cancer, she managed to
volunteer on local boards; as Choral/
Musical Director for JVH musicals, and
with the Kaslo Jazz Festival. However,
Karen’s most extraordinary gift to Kaslo
came from her talent for teaching music,
and inspiring people to sing!
Choir nine years ago, creating a cultural
fixture and training dozens of Kaslovians
to raise their voices, delighting audienc-
es to this day, the choir now under the
direction of Tamara Sunsong. Always the
positive adventurer, Karen’s last five years
took her to India, studying and taking
Ayuvedic yoga healing to fight her can-
cer; she walked all 800 km of the Camino
de Santiago – by herself; travelled to New
York, California and Italy; and completed
a first draft murder-mystery novel (set in
the Kootenays) while starting a second!
Karen leaves her loving parents, Roger
and Marion Behn, son Brock, husband
John, daughter and son-in-law Gillian
and Ross, grandson Rowan, brother
Jeremy, sister-in-law Claire, and neph-
ews Jordan and Chase, plus her ‘family’
of devoted friends who love her so very
much. We feel a huge void without
Karen, a woman who made us richer
people from knowing her enormous,
loving spirit. She had the heart of a
lion, and the spirit of a poet.
If you wish to remember Karen, do so
by bravely singing out loud today, while
making a generous donation to Kui-
mba Choir (‘Kuimba’ at KSCU, Kaslo)
or the Canadian Cancer Association.
A very special thanks goes out to Dr.
Philip Malpass for his compassion and
brilliance, and to all the Kaslo caregivers,

We all have a good reason to say,
“I can’t get sick right now.” Getting
the flu obviously takes a toll on our
physical health, but it can also inter-

and physically. Get seven to eight
hours each night whenever you can.
Wash your hands often: Colds
and the flu are spread via direct con-
tact, either from person to person or
from person to object. Simply shak-
ing hands with or touching the same
door handle as an infected person
can expose you to a virus. Your best
defense is washing your hands and
washing them often.
Get your flu shot: Quite pos-
sibly the best preventative mea-
sure you can take, getting the shot
protects you and your loved ones,
especially at-risk children and
seniors who could experience seri-
