1) World leaders including Donald rump and Queen Elizabeth II commemorate the
75th anniversary of D-day on the south coast of England. D-Day(Normandy
landings) were a turning point in the war. It was the largest amphibious assault in
history. Portsmouth was an important staging area for allied troops. It was on

June 6th , 1944.



2) Theresa May was forced to resign by her party over Brexit strategy. She was part
of the conservative and unionist party . She will remain prime minister till July
20th.

3) Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form the coalition
government. The turmoil arose over a bid to draft more ultra-Orthodox youth
into the military. His party is called Likud.

4) WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange faces up to 170 years in prison. He was accused
of working with Chelsea Manning to publish classified files in 2010. His 7 years of
asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy in London ended in April 2019.

4) Donald Trump removed India’s developing nation status thereby eliminating an
exception that allowed the country to export nearly 2,000 products to the U.S
duty free. It follows a move by Trump in May to end Turkey’s preferential trade
treatment.
5) Paris celebrates 130th anniversary of the Eifel Tower with light shows on May
17th. The tower was designed at the 1889 world’s fair.


6) The Notre Dame Cathedral collapses after a massive fire. The cause is unknown.
The 12th century cathedral is undergoing a 6 million euro renovation.


7) I.M. Pei dies at 102. He designed the Louvre Pyramid. His work won him the 1983
Pritzker Prize.
8) Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have had their first child named Archie.

9) South Korea’s Bong Joon-ho won the Palme d’Or from Cannes Film Festival. The
Film was called “Parasite”. Antonio Banderas won the Best Actor prize. Emily
Beecham won the Best Actress Prize.

10)The book Celestial Bodies wins the Man Booker International prize. The author is
Jokha Alharthi, the first Gulf writer to win the award.

11)Women’s football world cup kicks off in France. Fatma Samoura is the FIFA
secretary general.
12)The ICC cricket world cup will take place from the 30th of May till the 14th of July
in England and Wales. This is the first world cup in which no associate or non
Full member team will participate. First time at least one Full member hasn’t
qualified (Zimbabwe and Ireland failed to qualify). England has never organized
a day/night match in world cup history. Since 1999 Australia has never been
defeated during their chasing. Nissan is the Sponsor till 2023 and VIVO has also
won global sponsorship for ICC events. Star India may score 1,800 crore world
cup ad revenue.
13)Rafael Nadal wins his 12th French open title. He defeated Dominic Thiem to win
the title. Only player to win the same grand slam 12 times.

15)Narendra Modi took oath on the 30th of May. Amit Shah (Ministry of home

18)Tiger Zinda hai actor, Girish Karnad passes away at 81. He was a Jnanpith
Awardee and a winner of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and 4 filmfare awards.


19) GS Lakshmi becomes first woman to be ICC match refree.


20) Chinmay Prabhu, a 20 year old sets the world record for solving puzzles
underwater by solving 9 pyraminx puzzles while holding his breath underwater
in 1 minute and 48 seconds. It is has been recorded as the ”Most Pyraminx
(Rubik’s cube) solved underwater”.
