Mass OF SAINT FULL SCORE SAT Choir Cantor ‘Assembly Flute Trumpet Guitar Keyboard INTRODUCTORY NOTES Mass of Saint Ann is scored for soprano, alto, and tenor voices, as is typical in contemporary music. When ulilizing 2 full complement Of singers (SATB), | recommend having the basses sing the melody {soprano line) in their own octave. Text and melody are the most important elements, so allow the choir to sing in unison, especially \when teaching the Mass, to aid the assembly in learning, participation, and memorization. Then vary the vocal harmonies to create an interesting array of textures. The up-tempo movements (Glory to God; Gospel Acclamation; Holy, Holy, Holy; and the Great Amen} are fundamentally guitar: driven, Ifthe keyboard part is used, be careful not to get bogged down in playing every note. Accenting the strong beats and being mindful of the tempo markings is far more important in accompanying and supporting. the congregation and. choir. A simple chythmic pattern on the drumsipercussion is essential to establish and maintain a musical fel for each section. The slower, quieter movements (Kyrie/Lord, Have Mercy; the ‘Memorial Acclamations; and the Lamb of God) ean be led effectively With simply piano or guitar It ic nat necessary to use drumslporcussion (bass at these more reflective times. Here, simple cymbal swells will prove to be an effective addition Refer to the recording Mass of Saint Ann (WLP 018004) for more _uidance on performance ideas.
