POST-LAB TASKS

1. How is the operation of Wheatstone bridge affected by changes in the input power
supply voltage? Would there be an advantage in using a higher voltage?
Answer:
A Wheatstone bridge is a means of seeing a small voltage variation which is on top of larger
voltage. That’s why it’s a balanced bridge. The bridge basically takes out the large voltage so
only the small change is seen. It is completely immune to power supply variation so higher or
lower power supplies makes no difference.

2. Wheatstone bridge can be used to determine resistance of resistors made of a variety of

materials. Is it possible to adapt Wheatstone bridge for determining hot resistance of an
electric lamp? Explain your response.
Answer:
No, it is not possible to adapt Wheatstone bridge for determining hot resistance of an electric
lamp because one problem would be that the current for the meter that detects the balance
point has to come through the resistor being measured. So, you might be trying to detect
when the meter is actually reading zero instead of some other very low value of current.
There are ways around this (by adding amplifiers for example) but the basic Wheatstone
bridge would have such difficulties.

3. How much voltage needs to be dropped across resistor R1 in order to make voltage VAB
equal to zero (as shown in Fig. 6.2)?How much resistance must R1 possess in order to
drop that amount of voltage?

The Potential drop between A and B will be zero when the above circuit is balanced.

For balanced circuit:

R1/10=60/30

R1=60/30*10

R1=20k Ω

R1 must possess 20k Ω in order to make voltage Vab equal to zero.

4. Is it possible to find the current through a branch or to find a voltage across the branch
using Wye-Delta/ Delta-Wye conversions only? If so, justify your answer.
Answer:
Current cannot be measured through a branch as it flows through the resistor. However, voltage
can be measured across the branch but for different cases for both series and parallel and neither
one of them.

5. Find the value of 𝑹𝒆𝒒 for the circuit given below when the switch is open and when the
switch is closed?

Figure 5

When switch is closed/open:

R1= 1/10+1/10+1/5=5/2

R2=1/10+1/10+1/10=10/3

Req=1/R1+1/R2

Req=2/5+3/10=10/7
