UNIT I FUNDAMENTALS & LINK LAYER

Building a network – Requirements - Layering and protocols - Internet Architecture – Network

software – Performance ; Link layer Services - Framing - Error Detection - Flow control

Objective:

The Students are exposed to the basic concepts of Layering and its Boundaries. The Data
link layer and its functionality are discussed in detail.
The link layer flow control, error detection and correction are dealt in detail.This unit
gives an overview of various network architectures, physical media, channel access techniques
and the related link-level protocols.

UNIT II MEDIA ACCESS & INTERNETWORKING

Media access control - Ethernet (802.3) - Wireless LANs – 802.11 – Bluetooth - Switching and

Bridging – Basic Internetworking (IP, CIDR, ARP, DHCP,ICMP )

Objective:
In this Unit, IEEE standards for both the wired and wireless networks are discussed in
detail, with internetworking devices.
Different protocols in the Network Layer (IP, ARP, RARP, DHCP, ICMP) are discussed
along with switching and bridges.
This unit deals with medium access protocols for direct link networks and Bluetooth
devices.

UNIT III ROUTING

Routing (RIP, OSPF, metrics) – Switch basics – Global Internet (Areas, BGP, IPv6), Multicast –

Addresses – multicast routing (DVMRP, PIM)

Objective:
The main objective of this unit is to impart a thorough knowledge of Routing Algorithms
with different Routing Protocols
In this Unit, Circuit and Packet Switching is explained in detail. The Global Internet,
Multicasting and multicast routing in the network layer are also discussed in detail.

UNIT IV TRANSPORT LAYER

Overview of Transport layer - UDP - Reliable byte stream (TCP) - Connection management –

Flow control - Retransmission – TCP Congestion control - Congestion avoidance (DECbit, RED)

– QoS –Application requirements

Objective:
In this Unit, Various Protocols like UDP and TCP implemented in the Transport Layer
are discussed. Flow Control, Quality of Service, Congestion Control and avoidance at the
Transport Layer are explained in detail.

UNIT V APPLICATION LAYER

Traditional applications -Electronic Mail (SMTP, POP3, IMAP, MIME) – HTTP – Web Services

– DNS- SNMP

Objective:
This Unit discusses the various applications layer Protocols like SMTP, POP3, IMAP,
MIME and HTTP.

To make the students to get familiarized with different protocols and network
components.
