Question 5: I told her I understood what she was feeling as we were both after all in the same
boat.
A. in a similar take B. in a similar find C. in a similar situation D. in a similar case

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being
corrected all the time. If corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a
day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by
bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way,
children learn all the other things they learn to do without being taught – to talk, run, climb, whistle,
ride a bicycle – compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly
make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes
for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would
never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon
he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of
other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this
is a good way of saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer
book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work?
Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right
answer. Let’s end all this nonsense of grades, exams, and marks. Let us throw them all out, and
let the children learn what all educated persons must someday learn, how to measure their own
understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.
Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as
school teachers if they ask for it. The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school
and used for the rest of one’s life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as
ours. Anxious parents and teachers say, “But suppose they fail to learn something essential,
something they will need to get on in the world?” Don’t worry! If it is essential, they will go out into
the world and learn it.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
The concept of obtaining fresh water from iceberg that is towed to populated areas and
arid regions of the world was once treated as a joke more appropriate to cartoons than real life.
But now it is being considered quite seriously by many nations, especially since scientists have
warned that the human race will outgrow its fresh water supply faster than it runs out of food.
Glaciers are a possible source of fresh water that has been overlooked until recently. (A)
Three-quarters of the Earth's fresh water supply is still tied up in glacial ice, a reservoir
of untapped fresh water so immense that it could sustain all the rivers of the world for 1,000
years. Floating on the oceans every year are 7,659 trillion metric tons of ice encased in 10,000
icebergs that break away from the polar ice caps, more than ninety percent of them from
Antarctica. (B)
Huge glaciers that stretch over the shallow continental shelf give birth to icebergs
throughout the year. Icebergs are not like sea ice, which is formed when the sea itself freezes;
rather, they are formed entirely on land, breaking off when glaciers spread over the sea. As they
drift away from the polar region, icebergs sometimes move mysteriously in a direction opposite to
the wind, pulled by subsurface currents. Because they melt more slowly than smaller pieces of
ice, icebergs have been known to drift as far north as 35 degrees south of the equator in the
Atlantic Ocean. (C)
The difficulty arises in other technical matters, such as the prevention of rapid melting
in warmer climates and the funneling of fresh water to shore in great volume. But even if
the icebergs lost half of their volume in towing, the water they could provide would be far
cheaper than that produced by desalination, or removing salt from water. (D)
Question 43: What is the main topic of the passage?
A. The movement of glaciers B. Icebergs as a source of fresh water
C. Future water shortages D. The future of the world's rivers

A. Towing icebergs to dry areas is economically possible

D. Icebergs could not be towed very far before they would melt

American humor and American http://dethithu.net
popular heroes were born together. The first popular heroes of the
new nation were comic heroes, and the first popular humor of the new nation was the antics of its hero-
clowns.
The heroic and the comic were combined in novel American proportions in popular literature. The
heroic themes are obvious enough and not much different from those in the legends of other times and
places: Achilles, Beowulf, Siegfried, Roland, and King Arthur. The American Davy Crockett legends
repeat the familiar pattern of the old world heroic story: the pre-eminence of a mighty hero whose fame in

force of body and will. He killed four wolves at the age of six. He hugged a bear to death; he killed a
rattlesnake with his teeth. He mastered the forces of nature. Crockett’s most famous natural exploit was
saving the earth on the coldest day in history. First, he climbed a mountain to determine the trouble. Then
he rescued all creation by squeezing bear-grease on the earth’s frozen axis and over the sun’s icy face. He
whistled, “Push along, keep moving!” The earth gave a grunt and began moving.
Neither the fearlessness nor the bold huntsman’s prowess was peculiarly American. Far more
distinctive was the comic quality, all heroes are heroic; few are also clowns. What made the American
popular hero heroic also made him comic. “May be”, said Crockett, “you’ll laugh at me and not at my
book”. The ambiguity of American life and the vagueness which laid the continent open to adventure,
which made the land a rich storehouse of the unexpected, which kept vocabulary ungoverned and the
language fluid----this same ambiguity suffused both the Crockett legends were never quite certain whether
to laugh or to applaud, or whether what they saw and heard was wonderful, awful or ridiculous.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions.
The technology of the North American colonies did not differ strikingly from that of Europe, but in
one respect, the colonists enjoyed a great advantage. Especially by comparison with Britain, Americans
had a wonderfully plentiful supply of wood.
The first colonists did not, as many people imagine, find an entire continent covered by a climax
forest. Even along the Atlantic seaboard, the forest was broken at many points. Nevertheless, all sorts of
fine trees abounded, and through the early colonial period, those who pushed westward encountered new
forests. By the end of the colonial era, the price of wood had risen slightly in eastern cities, but wood was
still extremely abundant. http://dethithu.net
The availability of wood brought advantages that have seldom been appreciated. Wood was a
foundation of the economy. Houses and all manner of buildings were made of wood to a degree unknown
in Britain. Secondly, wood was used as fuel for heating and cooking. Thirdly, it was used as the source of
important industrial compounds, such as potash, an industrial alkali; charcoal, a component of gunpowder;
and tannic acid, used for tanning leather.
The supply of wood conferred advantages but had some negative aspects as well. Iron at that time
was produced by heating iron ore with charcoal. Because Britain was so stripped of trees, she was unable to
exploit her rich iron mines. But the American colonies had both iron ore and wood; iron production was
encouraged and became successful. However, when Britain developed coke smelting, the Colonies did not
follow suit because they had plenty of wood and besides, charcoal iron was stronger than coke iron. Coke
smelting led to technologic innovations and was linked to the emergence of the Industrial Revolution. In
the early nineteenth century, the former colonies lagged behind Britain in industrial development because
their supply of wood led them to cling to charcoal iron.
Question 48: What does the passage mainly discuss? http://dethithu.net

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Line Most forms of property are concrete and tangible, such as houses, cars, furniture or anything else
that is included in one’s possessions. Other forms of property can be intangible and copyright
deals with intangible forms of property. Copyright is a legal protection extended to authors of
creative works, for example, books, magazine articles, maps, films, plays, television shows,
5 software, paintings, photographs, music, choreography in dance and all other forms of intellectual
or artistic property.
Although the purpose of artistic property is usually public use and enjoyment, copyright
establishes the ownership of the creator. When a person buys a copyrighted magazine, it belongs
to this individual as a tangible object. However, the authors of the magazine articles own the
10 research and the writing that went into creating the articles. The right to make and sell or give
away copies of books or articles belongs to the authors, publishers, or other individuals or
organizations that hold the copyright. To copy an entire book or a part of it, permission must be
received from the copyright owner, who will most likely expect to be paid.
Copyright law distinguishes between different types of intellectual property. Music may be played
15 by anyone after it is published. However, if it is performed for profit, the performers need to pay a
fee, called a royalty. A similar principle applies to performances of songs and plays. On the other
hand, names, ideas, and book titles are accepted. Ideas do not become copyrighted property until
they are published in a book, a painting or a musical work. Almost all artistic work created before
the 20th century is not copyrighted because it was created before the copyright law was passed.
20 The two common ways of infringing upon the copyright are plagiarism and piracy. Plagiarizing
the work of another person means passing it off as one’s own. The word plagiarism is derived
from the Latin plagiarus, which means “abductor”. Piracy may be an act of one person, but, in
many cases, it is a joint effort of several people who reproduce copyrighted material and sell it for
profit without paying royalties to the creator. Technological innovations have made piracy easy
25 and anyone can duplicate a motion picture on videotape, a computer program, or a book. Video
cassette recorders can be used by practically anyone to copy movies and television programs, and
copying software has become almost as easy as copying a book. Large companies zealously
monitor their copyrights for slogans, advertisements, and brand names, protected by a trademark.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Line It is estimated that over 99 percent of all species that ever existed have become extinct. What
causes extinction? When a species is no longer adapted to a changed environment, it may perish. The
exact causes of a species’ death vary from situation to situation. Rapid ecological change may render
an environment hostile to a species. For example, temperatures may change and a species may not be
5 adapted. Food resources may be affected by environmental changes, which will then cause problems
for a species requiring these resources. Other species may become better adapted to an environment,
resulting in competition and, ultimately, in the death of a species.
The fossil record reveals that extinction has occurred throughout the history of Earth. Recent
analyses have also revealed that on some occasions many species became extinct at the same time - a
10 mass extinction. One of the best-known examples of mass extinction occurred 65 million years ago
with the demise of dinosaurs and many other forms of life. Perhaps the largest mass extinction was
the one that occurred 225 million years ago, when approximately 95 percent of all species died. Mass
Page 4/8 - Code 485
extinctions can be caused by a relatively rapid change in the environment and can be worsened by the
close interrelationship of many species. If, for example, something were to happen to destroy much
15 of the plankton in the oceans, then the oxygen content of Earth would drop, even affect organisms
not living in the oceans. Such a change would probably lead to a mass extinction.
One interesting, and controversial, finding is that extinctions during the past 250 million years
have tended to be more intense every 26 million years. The periodic extinction might be due to
intersection of the earth’s orbit with a cloud of comets, but this theory is purely speculative. Some
20 researchers have also speculated that extinction may often be random. That is, certain species may be
eliminated and others may survive for no particular reason. A species’ survival may have nothing to
do with its ability or inability to adapt. If so, some of revolutionary history may reflect a sequence of
essentially random events.

Scientists have discovered the bones of what may be the largest meat-eating dinosaur ever to walk the
earth. The discovery was made by a team of researchers from Argentina and North America in Patagonia,
a desert on the eastern slopes of the Andes in South America. Besides the interesting fact that the
dinosaur was huge and horrifying, it is even more astounding that the bones of a number of the dinosaurs
were found together. This discovery challenges the prior theory that the biggest meat-eaters lived as
loners and instead indicates that they may have lived and hunted in packs. The Tyrannosaurus Rex lived
in North America and was believed to hunt and live alone.
The newly discovered meat-eater appears to be related to the Giganotosaurus family, being as closely
related to it as a fox would be to a dog. It is actually not of the same family at all as the Tyrannosaurus
Rex, being as different from it as a cat is from a dog.
The fossilized remains indicate that the animals lived about 100 million years ago. With needle-shaped
noses and razor sharp teeth, they were larger than the Tyrannosaurus Rex, although their legs were
slightly shorter, and their jaws were designed to be better able to dissect their prey quickly and precisely.
Question 35: The author states that the newly discovered dinosaur remains are evidence that it was the
largest __________. http://dethithu.net

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions. http://dethithu.net
Humans have struggled against weeds since the beginnings of agriculture. Marring our gardens is one
of the milder effects of weeds - any plants that thrive where they are unwanted. They clog waterways,
destroy wildlife habitats, and impede farming. Their spread eliminates grazing areas and accounts for
one-third of all crop loss. They compete for sunlight, nutrients, and water with useful plants.
The global need for weed control had been answered mainly by the chemical industry. Its herbicides
are effective and sometimes necessary, but some pose serious problems, particularly if misused. Toxic
compounds threaten animal and public health when they accumulate in food plants, groundwater, and
drinking water. They also harm workers who apply them. http://dethithu.net
In recent years, the chemical industry has introduced several herbicides that are more ecologically
sound. Yet new chemicals alone cannot solve the world's weed problems. Hence, scientists are exploring
the innate weed-killing powers of living organisms, primarily insects and microorganisms.
The biological agents now in use are environmentally benign and are harmless to humans. They can be
chosen for their ability to attack selected targets and leave crops and other plants untouched. In contrast,
some of the most effective chemicals kill virtually all the plants they come in contact with, sparing only
those that are naturally resistant or have been genetically modified for resistance. Furthermore, a number
of biological agents can be administered only once, after which no added applications are needed.
Chemicals typically must be used several times per growing season.
Question 45: With what topic does this passage primarily deal?
A. The importance of the chemical industry.
B. The dangers of toxic chemicals.
C. A proposal to ban the use of all herbicides.
D. Advantages of biological agents over chemical ones.
Question 46: The word “marring” in bold is closest in meaning to __________.

Learning means acquiring knowledge or developing the ability to perform new behaviors. It is common to
think of learning as something that takes place in school, but much of human learning
occurs outside the classroom, and people continue to learn throughout their lives.

Even before they enter school, young children learn to walk, to talk, and to use their hands to manipulate
toys, food, and other objects. They use all of their senses to learn about the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells in
their environments. They learn how to interact with their parents, siblings, friends, and other people important to
their world. When they enter school, children learn basic academic subjects such as reading, writing, and
mathematics. They also continue to learn a great deal outside the classroom. They learn which behaviors are
likely to be rewarded and which are likely to be punished. They learn social skills for interacting with other
children. After they finish school, people must learn to adapt to the many major changes that affect their lives,
such as getting married, raising children, and finding and keeping a job. http://dethithu.net
Because learning continues throughout our lives and affects almost everything we do, the study of
learning is important in many different fields. Teachers need to understand the best ways to educate children.
Psychologists, social workers, criminologists, and other human-service workers need to understand how certain
experiences change people’s behaviors. Employers, politicians, and advertisers make use of the principles of
learning to influence the behavior of workers, voters, and consumers.
Learning is closely related to memory, which is the storage of information in the brain. Psychologists who
study memory are interested in how the brain stores knowledge, where this storage takes place, and how the brain
later retrieves knowledge when we need it. In contrast, psychologists who study learning are more interested in
behavior and how behavior changes as a result of a person’s experiences.
There are many forms of learning, ranging from simple to complex. Simple forms of learning involve a
single stimulus. A stimulus is anything perceptible to the senses, such as a sight, sound, smell, touch, or taste. In a
form of learning known as classical conditioning, people learn to associate two stimuli that occur in sequence,
such as lightning followed by thunder. In operant conditioning, people learn by forming an association between a
behavior and its consequences (reward or punishment). People and animals can also learn by observation - that is,
by watching others perform behaviors. More complex forms of learning include learning languages, concepts, and
motor skills.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following sentences from 41 to 50.

Culture is a word in common use with complex meanings, and is derived, like the term broadcasting,
from the treatment and care of the soil and of what grows on it. It is directly related to cultivation and the
adjectives cultural and cultured are part of the same verbal complex. A person of culture has identifiable
attributes, among them a knowledge of and interest in the arts, literature, and music. Yet the word culture does
not refer solely to such knowledge and interest nor, indeed, to education. At least from the 19th century onwards,
under the influence of anthropologists and sociologists, the word culture has come to be used generally both in
the singular and the plural (cultures) to refer to a whole way of life of people, including their customs, laws,
conventions, and values
Distinctions have consequently been drawn between primitive and advanced culture and cultures, between
elite and popular culture, between popular and mass culture, and most recently between national and global
cultures. Distinctions have been drawn too between culture and civilization; the latter is a word derived not, like
culture or agriculture, from the soil, but from the city. The two words are sometimes treated as synonymous. Yet
this is misleading. While civilization and barbarism are pitted against each other in what seems to be a perpetual
behavioural pattern, the use of the word culture has been strongly influenced by conceptions of evolution in the
19th century and of development in the 20th century. Cultures evolve or develop. They are not static. They have
twists and turns. Styles change. So do fashions. There are cultural processes. What, for example, the word
cultured means has changed substantially since the study of classical (that is, Greek and Roman) literature,
philosophy, and history ceased in the 20th century to be central to school and university education. No single
alternative focus emerged, although with computers has come electronic culture, affecting kinds of study, and
most recently digital culture. As cultures express themselves in new forms not everything gets better or more
civilized.
The multiplicity of meanings attached to the word made and will make it difficult to define. There is no
single, unproblematic definition, although many attempts have been made to establish one. The only non-
problematic definitions go back to agricultural meaning (for example, cereal culture or strawberry culture) and
medical meaning (for example, bacterial culture or penicillin culture). Since in anthropology and sociology we
also acknowledge culture clashes, culture shock, and counter-culture, the range of reference is extremely wide.

answer to each of the questions
In the world today, particular in the two most industrialized areas, North America and Europe, recycling
is the big news. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways to be sensitive to the
environment. Recycling means finding ways to use products a second time. The motto of the recycling
movement is “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. http://dethithu.net
The first step is to reduce garbage. In stores, a shopper has to buy products in blister packs, boxes and
expensive plastic wrappings. A hamburger from a fast food restaurant comes in lots of packaging: usually paper,
a box and a bag. All that packaging is wasted resources. People should try to buy things that are wrapped simply,
and to reuse cups and utensils. Another way to reduce waste is to buy high-quality products. When low-quality
appliances break, many customers throw them away and buy new ones - a loss of more resources and more
energy. For example, if a customer buys a high-quality appliance that can be easily repaired, the manufacturer
receives an important message. In the same way, if a customer chooses a product with less packaging, that
customer sends an important message to the manufacturers. To reduce garbage, the throw-away must stop.
The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles. After customers
empty the bottles, they return them to the stores. The manufacturers of the drinks collect bottles, wash them, and
then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved. In some parts of the world,
returning bottles for money is a common practice. In those places, the garbage dumps have relatively little glass
and plastic from throw-away bottles.

Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of few speakers to become the dominant
language of international communication. English as we know it to day emerged around 1350, after having
incorporated many elements of French that were introduced following the Norman invasion off 1066. Until the
1600s, English was, for the most part, spoken only in England and had not expanded even as far as Wales,
Scotland, or Ireland. However, during the course of the next two century, English began too spread around the
globe as a result of exploration, trade (including slave trade), colonization, and missionary work. Thus, small
enclaves of English, speakers became established and grew in various parts of the world. As these communities
proliferated, English gradually became the primary language of international business, banking, and diplomacy.
Currently, about 80 percent oof the information scored on computer systems worldwide is in English.
Two thirds of the world's science writing is in English, and English is the main language of technology,
advertising, media, international airport, and air traffic controllers. Today there are more than 700 million

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 45 to 54.
A survey is a study, generally in the form of an interview or a questionnaire, which provides
information concerning how people think and act. In the United States, the best-known surveys are the
Gallup poll and the Harris poll. As anyone who watches the news during campaigns presidential knows,
these polls have become an important part of political life in the United States.
North Americans are familiar with the many “person on the street” interviews on local television
news shows. While such interviews can be highly entertaining, they are not necessarily an accurate
indication of public opinion. First, they reflect the opinions of only those people who appear at a certain
location. Thus, such samples can be biased in favor of commuters, middle-class shoppers, or factory
workers, depending on which area the news people select. Second, television interviews tend to attract
outgoing people who are willing to appear on the air, while they frighten away others who may feel
intimidated by a camera. A survey must be based on a precise, representative sampling if it is to
genuinely reflect a broad range of the population. http://dethithu.net
In preparing to conduct a survey, sociologists must exercise great care in the wording of questions.
An effective survey question must be simple and clear enough for people to understand it. It must also
be specific enough so that there are no problems in interpreting the results. Even questions that are less
structured must be carefully phrased in order to elicit the type of information desired. Surveys can be
indispensable sources of information, but only if the sampling is done properly and the questions are
worded accurately.
Trang 3/7 - Mã đề thi 216
There are two main forms of surveys: the interview and the questionnaire. Each of these forms of
survey research has its advantages. An interviewer can obtain a high response rate because people find it
more difficult to turn down a personal request for an interview than to throw away a written
questionnaire. In addition, an interviewer can go beyond written questions and probe for a subject’s
underlying feelings and reasons. However, questionnaires have the advantage of being cheaper and
more consistent.

Although most universities in the United States are on a semester system, which offers classes in the
fall and spring, some schools observe a quarter system comprised of fall, winter, spring, and summer
quarters. The academic year, September to June, is divided into three quarters of eleven weeks each
beginning in September, January, and March: the summer quarter, June to August, is composed of
shorter sessions of vary length.

Trang 4/7 - Mã đề thi 216

There are several advantages and disadvantages to the quarter system. On the plus side, students who
wish to complete their degrees in less than the customary four years may take advantage of the
opportunity to study year round by enrolling in all four quarters. In addition, although most students
begin their programs in the fall quarter, they may enter at the beginning of any other quarters. Finally,
since the physical facilities are kept in operation year round, the resources are used effectively to serve
the greatest number of students. But there are several disadvantages as well. Many faculty complain that
eleven-week term is simply not enough for them to cover the material required by most college coursed.
Students also find it difficult to complete the assignments in such a short period of time.
In order to combine the advantages of the quarter system with those of the semester system some
colleges and universities have instituted a three-term trimester system. In fourteen weeks, faculty and
students have more time to cover material and finish course requirements, but the additional term
provides options for admission during the year and accelerates the degree programs for those students
who wish to graduate early.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B , C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
This rapid transcontinental settlement and these new urban industrial circumstances of the last half
of the 19th century were accompanied by the development of a national literature of great abundance and
variety. New themes, new forms, new subjects, new regions, new authors, new audiences all emerged in
the literature of this half century.
As a result, at the onset of World War I, the spirit and substance of American literature had
evolved remarkably, just as its center of production had shifted from Boston to New York in the late
1880s and the sources of its energy to Chicago and the Midwest. No longer was it produced, at least in its
popular forms, in the main by solemn, typically moralistic men from New England and the Old South; no
longer were polite, well-dressed, grammatically correct, middle-class young people the only central
characters in its narratives; no longer were these narratives to be set in exotic places and remote times; no
longer, indeed, were fiction, poetry, drama, and formal history the chief acceptable forms of literary
expression; no longer, finally, was literature read primarily by young, middle class women.
In sum, American literature in these years fulfilled in considerable measure the condition Walt
Whitman called for in 1867 in describing Leaves of Grass: it treats, he said of his own major work, each
state and region as peers "and expands from them, and includes the world ... connecting an American
citizen with the citizens of all nations." At the same time, these years saw the emergence of what has been
designated "the literature of argument," powerful works in sociology, philosophy, psychology, many of
them impelled by the spirit of exposure and reform. Just as America learned to play a role in this half
century as an autonomous international political, economic, and military power, so did its literature
establish itself as a producer of major works.

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of
communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech.
When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which
motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form
of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used
internationally, spelling, however, cannot.
Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or
unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies
approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction.
Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with
the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide,
warn, and instruct people.
While verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express
human thoughts and feelings.

Long ago prehistoric man began to domesticate a number of wild plants and animals for his
own use. This not only provided more abundant food but also allowed more people to live on a
smaller plot of ground. We tend to forget that all of our present-day pets, livestock, and food plants
were taken from the wild and developed into the forms we know today.
As centuries passed and human cultures evolved and blossomed, humans began to organise
their knowledge of nature into the broad field of natural history. One aspect of early natural history
concerned the use of plants for drugs and medicine. The early herbalists sometimes overworked their
imaginations in this respect. For example, it was widely believed that a plant or part of a plant that
resembles an internal organ would cure ailments of that organ, Thus, an extract made from a heart-
shaped leaf might be prescribed for a person suffering from heart problems.
Nevertheless, the overall contributions of these early observers provided the rudiments of our
present knowledge of drugs and their uses.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions.
Who talk more – men or women? Most people believe that women talk more. However,
linguist Deborah Tannen, who has studied the communication style of men and women, says that
this is a stereotype. According to Tannen, women are more verbal – talk more – in private
situations, where they use conversation as the “glue” to hold relationships together. But, she
says, men talk more in public situations, where they use conversation to exchange information
and gain status. Tannen points out that we can see these differences even in children. Little girls
often play with one “best friend”, their play includes a lot of conversation. Little boys often play
games in groups; their play usually involves more doing than talking. In school, girls are often
better at verbal skills, boys are often better at mathematics.
A recent study at Emory University helps to shed light on the roots of this difference.
Researchers studied conversation between children age 3-6 and their parents. They found
evidence that parents talk very differently to their son than they do to their daughters. The
startling conclusion was that parents use more language with their girls. Specifically, when
parents talk with their daughters, they use more descriptive language and more details. There is
also far more talk about emotions, especially sadness, with daughters than with sons.

HEALTH AND HAPPINESS
Health experts suggest that ……[<1>]….... healthy and happy, it’s important to keep our
lives in balance. Chinese philosophy, which has spanned thousands of years, uses the principles
of yin and yang to explain the importance of balance in life. Explained simply, yang represents
the active elements of the universe, ……[<2>]….... the yin represents the passive elements. This
expresses the importance of balance in ……[<3>]….... of living. Today health experts agree that it’s
important to have a balanced life. For example, they’ve said it’s necessary to have a balance
between work and rest and to have a balanced exercise program. ……[<4>]…...., I’m sure you’d
agree that in our busy world, it’s not always easy to get and keep balance in our lives.
……[<5>]….... business or study deadlines, many people work to excess, leaving little time
at the end of their busy day to spend with family and friends. They eat fast - food and don’t get
enough rest or recreation and then suffer badly from the effects of stress. It’s sad that this
situation often happens when people believe that access to ……[<6>]….... is the answer to
happiness instead of understanding the importance of balanced living.
While ambition can be a good thing, ……[<7>]….... too much ambition can cause a person to
become ‘out of balance’. Of course it’s also unbalanced to spend too much time on entertainment
and pleasure activities, with little or no time ……[<8>]….... to work or education. Balance means
allocating enough time for all the important aspects of life, such as spending time with family and
friends, working or studying, as well as resting and relaxing.
Experts now tell us that having balance in our life is the answer, not only to health and
happiness, ……[<9>]….... to success. If you’re balanced, you’ll have more energy and you’ll reach
your ambitions in a more relaxed fashion; with less stress. So ……[<10>]….... is your life? Do you
need to allocate your time differently to have better balance in your life?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions.
A number of factors related to the voice reveal the personality of the speaker. The first is the
broad area of communication, which includes imparting information by use of language,
communicating with a group or an individual, and specialized communication through
performance. A person conveys thoughts and ideas through choice of words, by a tone of voice
that is pleasant or unpleasant, gentle or harsh, by the rhythm that is inherent within the
language itself, and by speech rhythms that are flowing and regular or uneven and hesitant, and
finally, by the pitch and melody of the utterance. When speaking before a group, a person's tone
may indicate unsureness or fright, confidence or calm. At interpersonal levels, the tone may
reflect ideas and feelings over and above the words chosen, or may belie them. Here the
speaker's tone can consciously or unconsciously reflect intuitive sympathy or antipathy, lack of
concern or interest, fatigue, anxiety, enthusiasm or excitement, all of which are usually
discernible by the acute listener. Public performance is a manner of communication that is highly
specialized with its own techniques for obtaining effects by voice and /or gesture. The
motivation derived from the text, and in the case of singing, the music, in combination with the
performer's skills, personality, and ability to create empathy will determine the success
of artistic, political, or pedagogic communication.
Second, the voice gives psychological clues to a person's self-image, perception of others, and
emotional health. Self-image can be indicated by a tone of voice that is confident, pretentious,
shy, aggressive, outgoing, or exuberant, to name only a few personality traits. Also the sound
may give a clue to the facade or mask of that person, for example, a shy person hiding behind an
overconfident front. How a speaker perceives the listener's receptiveness, interest, or sympathy
in any given conversation can drastically alter the tone of presentation, by encouraging or
discouraging the speaker. Emotional health is evidenced in the voice by free and melodic sounds
of the happy, by constricted and harsh sound of the angry, and by dull and lethargic qualities of
the depressed.
Câu 31: What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The function of the voice in performance B. The production of speech
C. The connection between voice and personality D. Communication styles
Câu 32: What does the author mean by staring that, "At interpersonal levels, tone may

A. The tone of voice can carry information beyond the meaning of words.
B. A high tone of voice reflects an emotional communication.
C. Feelings are more difficult to express than ideas.
D. Feelings are expressed with different words than ideas are.
Câu 33: The word "Here" in line 8 refers to _______.
