DISCOURSE ANALYSIS

1. Concept and Definition of Discourse


- Based on Oxford Dictionary, discourse is the use of language in speech and
writing in order to produce meaning. It is usually in order to see how different
parts of a text are connected. While Teun A. van Dijk explained that discourse
usually refers to a form of language use, public speeches or more generally to
spoken language or ways to speak some information’s. Discourse also give
language and the action in specific content. Discourse analysis itself defined
study of language above the level of sentence or specific more than sentence,
because it is combining with meaning, coherence, and complete purposes.

2. The differences between Discourse and Text (provide example of both)


Based on pedia.com, there are several differences between text and discourse
there are:
a. Text does not specify as an agent while discourse specify the agent of
information.
b. Text focus on grammatical and structure of sentences are analyzed while
discourses are agent involved in the communication, the social purpose are
analyzed.
c. Text is necessarily non-interactive while discourse is necessarily interactive.
d. Text usually in written form while discourse can be either in written, verbal,
visual or audio form.
e. Agent in text is not crucial while agent in discourse is crucial.
f. The example of text are press reports, street sign, documents etc. while the
example of discourse are dialogues, conversations, interactions in audio-
visual programmers, etc.
- The example of discourse is:
One day her mother said to her, “Come, Little Red Cap. Take this piece of cake and
bottle of wine and bring them to your grandmother”. (Little Red Riding Hood, by J.
and W. Grimm)
- The example of text is:
Swimming pool only for members.
