Design Document: Coaching Cycle on using an iPad

Learning Goals: The learning goal for this unit will be using an iPad to deliver instruction in math
and be more mobile in the classroom. Four instructional priorities will be specifically integrated:
explicit instruction, teacher clarity, structured classroom discussion, and opportunities to
respond.

Learner Attitudes and Characteristics: Based on the technology survey, my teacher expressed
interest in using an iPad to be more mobile. This teacher is very motivated to learn, but is
hesitant in her abilities with technology. She has expressed the need for lots of support and
patience. She has taught for 34 years and is a seasoned teacher.

Prerequisites: Teacher has a basic knowledge on how to work an iPad and display it using
airplay. She has her curriculum map and an understanding of where to find information on
instructional priorities and her scope and sequence for math. She also has her teacher’s
manuals with the content she needs to deliver to the students.

Brief Outline or Scope and Sequence of Unit: The coaching cycle will be broken down into
several sessions. I will begin with a model lesson using an iPad to be more mobile while
incorporating the 4 instructional priorities and tools we have decided to focus on. I will then
have a short debrief about the teacher’s thoughts on the lesson. I will then collaborate with the
teacher to create a math lesson using the tools. This will be followed with an observation by me
of the teacher teaching the lesson. I will again debrief with the teacher to follow up with her
thoughts on the lesson to create a goal to improve. I will provide any PD and resources she
needs to achieve her goal. She will then create a lesson again using the tools and instructional
priorities we are focusing on. I will observe and debrief. I will then send out a follow up survey
to assess how the teacher feels her efficiency using these tools has improved.

Objectives: The Sprucewood 4th grade teacher will develop an understanding of how to
incorporate instructional priorites (explicit instruction, teacher clarity, structured classroom
discussion, and opportunities to respond) while using an iPad to be more mobile in the
classroom by participating in a coaching cycle.

Scope and Sequence/Practice Activities

Activity Assessment/Feedback Mechanisms

Introductory Activity: There will be a debrief on my lesson.
Model Lesson for math using an iPad and Feedback will be given to me by the teacher.
incorporating instructional priorities.
Debrief on the model lesson. Discussion on
what the teacher noticed went well with the
demonstration.
Collaboration with the teacher to create a Observation of the lesson. Debrief session
math lesson using the iPad. will follow where I can give feedback to the
teacher on her lesson.
Debrief- using the 10 identify questions to
create a PEERS goal for the next lesson.
Collaboration/PD on another math lesson to Observation of the lesson
help achieve the goal.
Debrief and feedback session on the 2nd Follow up survey sent to the teacher about
lesson. the coaching cycle.

Instructor Materials: To complete this coaching cycle, I will need my iPad and access to 4th
grade math curriculum. I will need my apple pencil and the Doceri app. I will need to know the
management system that is used in the classroom. I will also need the Identify questions in
order to make a PEERS goal.

Examples of what should be used during a model lesson/teacher lesson:

• Teacher uses iPad to deliver teacher clarity
o Learning intenions
o Success Criteria
• Teacher uses iPad to purposefully plan slides for explicit instruction
o I do, we do , ya’ll do, you do are included
• Teacher uses iPad to create opportunities to respond for students
• Teacher uses iPad to create structured classroom discussions

Nonexamples of what should be observed during a model lesson/teacher lesson:

• iPad is not used to deliver instruction
• Parts of the explicit instruction routine are missing
• IPad is not used for purposeful planning
• Scaffolds for structured discussions are missing.

Motivational Strategies:
• Positive, specific feedback will be modeled during lessons
• I will use the teacher’s token economy appropriately to model correct implementation
of this priority
